Karnataka rebels to meet same fate as those in Maharashtra: Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Pointing to defeat of political leaders who switched sides in Assembly elections in Maharashtra and bypolls in some states, senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Thursday said ''defectors'' in Karnataka would face similar outcome in the coming byelections leading to resignation of Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

"I won't say that this result (Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly polls) will have its implications on bypolls in the state, but people will defeat defectors; people have defeated defectors in Maharashtra polls, also in Gujarat bypoll," the former Karnataka Chief Minister said.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, he claimed "Even in Karnataka, if by-elections are held for 15 Assembly seats, majority (of them) we will win and a situation will arise for Yediyurappa to resign."

Bypolls are to be held on December 5 to 15 out of the 17 constituencies represented by disqualified MLAs of Congress and JD(S), whose revolt led to the collapse of the coalition government of the two parties in July, paving the way for the BJP government headed by Yediyurappa.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President Dinesh Gundu Rao claimed that the BJP government in the state will collapse as disqualified MLAs will face "defeat" similar to "turncoats" who lost polls and bypolls in a few states, for which results were declared on Thursday.

"Be it Alpesh Thakor or Udayanraje Bhosale, nearly all the turncoats who cheated the electorate and their party by joining the BJP have been defeated. ''Atrupta'' MLAs of Karnataka will soon meet a similar fate. We will win all 17 seats and throw out this BJP ''COMA'' Government," Rao tweeted.

Yediyurappa had recently said disqualified Congress-JD(S) MLAs would be given BJP tickets for the bypolls if they wanted.

BJP needs to win at least six seats in the bypolls to remain in a majority in the assembly, which will still have two vacant seats (Maski and RR Nagar).

Asked if the Congress would form the government if the BJP ministry falls, Siddaramaiah, who is the leader of opposition in the state assembly, said: "We will go for polls. We will not go for a minority government like Yediyurappa."

On once again joining hands with JD(S), he merely said, "we have got an experience from that (coalition)". To a question on selection of Congress candidates for by-polls, Siddaramaih said, "looking at the developments at Supreme Court, which is hearing the case of disqualified MLAs, we will decide".

He also made it clear there was no question of taking disqualified MLAs back into the party fold.

Among the 15 constituencies going for polls, 12 were represented by Congress and three by JD(S).

However the lock down has hindered follow-up treatment for these critically ill as the Karnataka authorities has been steadfast in restricting entry into their land.

It was the gross inadequacies in critical healthcare in the district besides rather-easy proximity to nearby and bigger town that many residing on the north-east of the district have since long been making it to Mangalore for treatment of critical illness like cancer, dialysis and the alike.

Saudi Kannadigas charter flight from Dammam lands in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, June 22: A chartered flight from Dammam with more than 170 stranded Saudi Kannadiga passengers landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 8.53 pm.

The flight was chartered by Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum (SKHF), an unregistered NGO, which was formed recently to help the Kannadigas stranded in Saudi Arabia due to covid-19 lockdown under the leadership of Zakariya Jokatte, president of Jubail unit of Bearys Chamber of Commerce and Industry and KS Sheikh Karnire, Director of Expertise Contracting Co. Ltd, Saudi Arabia.

There were 165 adults and 8 infants on board the IndiGo flight. All the passengers were screened at the airport. They will be dispatched to quarantine centres after completing formalities.

SKHF had launched an online portal to assist those who were in need of emergency repatriation such as elderly people, those who lost their jobs, pregnant women and those who are in need of emergency medical treatment back home in India.

SKHF coordinated with the authorities concerned to carry out all the formalities and legal procedures in Saudi Arabia. SKHF members were present at the Dammam Airport to help the passengers during the departure.

Mr Jokatte and Mr Sheikh have thanked U T Khader, Mangaluru MLA and Dr Arathi Krishna, former deputy chairperson of NRI forum of government of Karnataka, for their help in chartering the flight.

Flight chartered by ‘Expertise’ repatriates stranded Saudi Kannadigas to Mangaluru along with employees

Mangaluru, June 11: The Saudi Arabia based Expertise Contracting Company, which is repatriating its employees to India and other countries, today allocated around 90 seats of one of its chartered flights to Kannadigas stranded in Saudi Arabia.

The Gulf Air flight took off with around 175 passengers on board from Dammam International Airport around noon local time. It is expected to land at Mangaluru International Airport at around 7 p.m. Indian time.

In fact the company had chartered the flights only to repatriate its employees. However, due to the lack of special flights under Vande Bharati Mission, the company decided to help the other stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia, who had approached Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum for help.

A company official said that around 2,000 employees from various countries in the Indian subcontinent are being repatriated, of which 1,665 are Indians. Already hundreds of them have reached India, and hundreds are still waiting for repatriation.

“We are grateful to Expertise for allowing to travel in the flight which the company had chartered to repatriate its own employees,” said one of the passengers before boarding the flight at the airport.

Director of Expertise, KS Shaikh said the 20-year-old Expertise group, one of the largest conglomerates in the GCC operating in petrochemical and heavy equipment sectors, has more than 10,000 employees and their family members in the Gulf, mainly in Jubail, one of the largest industrial cities.

Of these, the company has chosen over 2,000 employees for the covid-related repatriations considering various emergencies. He said 12 chartered flights have been engaged to carry out the repatriation exercise to the Indian subcontinent.
