Karnataka under flood threat, normal life thrown out of gear

Bengaluru, Oct 21 : Parts of North Karnataka were reeling under a threat of floods and normal life is thrown out of gear due to heavy rain lashing out since last two days under the influence of depression.

A Yellow alert has been sounded in Karnataka, based on an IMD warning about the possibility of rain continuing for the next 48 hours and fishermen in coastal belt have been warned against venturing into see for fishing as wind is blowing above 45 km per hour.

This was for the third time since April, when the North Karnataka region has come under a flood threat after delayed entry of South West Monsoon, which claimed more than 90 lives in its first entry, due to heavy discharge from Reservoirs in Maharashtra, which received heavy rain and forced releasing water from Koyna and other major reservoirs.

Krishna river is in spate due to heavy rain. Belagavi District was the worst affected this time as water has entered low lying areas and people were forced to sleepless nights as there had been no let off since Saturday night.

According to the Meteorological department, 58.1 mm rain had been reported in Belgavi city since the last 24 hours, ending at 8 am.

Rainfall was in excess of 66 per cent in October. Three houses collapsed in Shahpur, a suburb in the city, The Malaprabha river and some nallahs are overflowing.
Many parked vehicles washed away on Saturday evening due to heavy rain at Sankeswar and some vehicles found near the bridge on Monday morning.The National Highway 4 was closed for vehicular movement at night, Belagavi-Goa route also got affected near Sankarpet (Jamboti –Goa road), due to landslide.

Bengaluru, Apr 6: The Covid-19 Task Force aims to conduct 80,000 throat swab and blood tests over the next three weeks here.

According to Task Force Nodal Officer C N Manjunath an order for one lakh anti-body test kits has been placed, and was expected to arrive on April 12.

"From January 20 to March 23, more than 1.2 lakh people arrived at international airports from abroad. Of these, we have kept 37,358 under observation. The Health officials and personnel in fever clinics and hospitals are being trained to conduct the tests. There is no necessity to obtain a clearance to test people with suspected infection. Only laboratories need to get permission to test their blood and throat swab samples."

Bengaluru, Jun 22: The opening of Schools in the state, is unlikely before Dasara festival, as a majority of the parents are averse to send their children due to the COVID-19 scare.

According to official sources, in the State education department, a majority of parents, who were asked to give their opinion on re-opening of schools in the state, have reportedly favoured continuing the closing of schools till September.

The primary and Secondary education department had received feedback from various stakeholders including educational institutions, parents and Teachers, clocking high towards not opening the schools for the 2020-21 academic year till Dasara days.

Bantwal, Feb 7: A 31-year-old man has been arrested on charge of sexual assault on a minor boy at Kanyana under the limits of Vittla police station in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

The police have identified accused as Suresh Prabhu, a resident of Kanyana village. He is said to be an activist of a saffron outfit.

The alleged sexual assault took place on February 1, when the victim, a schoolboy, was on his way home from the school. 

According to police, Prabhu called the boy saying he wanted to tell a secret. He then took him to the school toilet and sexually assaulted him there. 

After returning home, the boy narrated the incident to his mother, who approached the jurisdictional Vittla police station and lodged a complaint. 

After taking the minor boy’s statement, the police registered a case under section 341, 377, 506 IPC and POCSO Act against Prabhu. He was arrested on February 5.
