Karnataka’s first Percutaneous Mitral Valve Replacement done in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 21: A 60 year old man got a fresh lease of life after one of the rarest heart valve replacements (Valve in Valve) was done for the first time in Karnataka, by a team of doctors led by Dr Yusuf Kumble at Indiana Hospital & Heart Institute, Mangaluru.

Mr. Raghavan, a patient hailing from Kerala, had undergone an open heart surgery and mitral valve replacement in Kerala about 12 years ago.  His artificial valve degenerated and slowly became dysfunctional during the last one year. He consulted many doctors at different hospitals for treatment of heart failure and was advised to redo open heart surgery in order to change the valve. He was suffering not only from heart failure but kidney failure too due to which redo open heart surgery would be highly risky. Hence doctors were not willing to perform the surgery on him. He had lost all hope. He was admitted to Indiana Hospital ICU and during the two weeks his heart condition worsened and was on ventilator.

He was offered a new modality of treatment of replacing the mitral valve with another artificial valve without open heart surgery. In this method a large hose-like pipe is introduced through the leg vein and enters into the right heart under fluoroscopic guidance. Then this enters the left heart after making a small hole in the inter-atrial wall of the heart. Through this wire a folded balloon mounted valve is carried to the left heart and positioned across the mitral valve. The valve is then implanted under fluoroscopic guidance.

This new treatment is done without opening the heart. Unlike angioplasty and stent which is only 3-4 mm in diameter, a heart valve is 23-28 mm in diameter. This is quite difficult to implant inside the heart without open heart surgery. This mode of treatment was introduced about five years back in the west and is slowly becoming popular. In India this the 15th valve implant and the first percutaneous valve implant in the southern states of Karnataka and Kerala.

This procedure was performed on Thursday, February 14 by a team of doctors led by Dr Yusuf Kumble. The team included Dr. Prashanth Vaijayanth and Dr Gopal Murugan from Chennai, Dr Abdul Mansoor and Dr. Jenu James. As this is a high risk and first-of-its-kind attempt, an efficient cardiac surgery team led by Dr Prashanth Vaijayanth was ready for backup in case of any emergency.

Mangaluru, May 13: Coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today reported a fresh covid-19 positive case. According to sources, this case also linked to Manglauru’s First Neuro Hospital, which has emerged as the corona hub of coastal Karnataka.

Health and Family Welfare department in its today’s bulletin revealed that a 38-year-old woman from Darandabagilu near Someshwara in Mangaluru taluk of Dakshina Kannada was tested coronavirus positive.

It is said that the woman was in touch with P-507, an octogenarian, who was being treated for neurological issues at First Neuro Hospital.

With this the total number of coronavirus positive cases reported in Dakshina Kannada rose to 34. Among them only 26 are residents of Dakshina Kannada. Four are from Kasaragod, three from Udupi and one from Bhatkal.

Among 34, currently there only 17 active cases. The condition of two among them is said to be critical.

Bengaluru, Jun 3: Former Union minister and senior Congress leader K H Muniyappa on Wednesday extended his support to former Prime minister and JD(S) National president H D Deve Gowda in the Rajya Sabha polls.

In a statement issued here here, Mr Muniyappa said that party which had an electoral understanding in the Lok Sabha elections, may extend support to Gowda in the June-19 Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka.

It may be recalled that the Election Commission of India, is conducting elections to Rajya Sabya to fill four vacancies from the Karnataka Assembly, in which the ruling BJP may bag two seats, while the remaining may be won by the Congress and the JD(S).

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Karnataka on Saturday reported the biggest single-day spurt of 2,798 cases and a record 70 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections in the state to 36,216, the health department said.

The day also saw a record 880 patients getting discharged after recovery.

Out of 2,798 fresh cases, a whopping 1,533 cases were from Bengaluru urban alone.

The previous biggest single-day spike was recorded on July 10 with 2,313 cases.

As of July 11 evening, cumulatively 36,216 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 613 deaths and 14,716 discharges, the health department said in its bulletin.

It said out of 20,883 active cases, 20,379 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 504 are in ICU.

Out of 70 deaths reported, 23 are from Bengaluru urban, 8 from Mysuru, five from Dakshina Kannada, among others.

Most of the dead are either with a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI).

Out of 2,798 cases tested positive today, contacts of the majority of the cases are still under tracing.

Among the districts where the new cases were reported, Bengaluru urban accounts for 1533 cases, followed by Dakshina Kannada 186, Udupi 90, Mysuru 83, Tumakuru 78, Dharwad 77 and Yadgir 74.

Bengaluru urban district tops the list of positive cases, with a total of 16,862 infections, followed by DakshinaKannada 2,026 and Kalaburagi 2,024.

A total of 7.99 lakh samples were tested so far, out of which 20,587 were tested on Saturday alone.

So far 7.46 lakh samples have been reported as negative, and out of them 17,488 were reported negative today.
