Karnataka’s Indira Canteens to become ‘Maharshi Valmiki Anna Kutira’

Bengaluru, Dec 18: Revenue minister R Ashoka on Tuesday said the government will rename Indira canteens, barring those in Bengaluru city, as 'Maharshi Valmiki Anna Kutira', drawing sharp reactions from the Congress that it was indulging in "cheap politics".

Ashoka told reporters the decision to rename the government-sponsored subsidized canteens after Valmiki following a suggestion from Shorapur MLA Narasimha Nayak (Raju Gouda). There are more than 260 Indira canteens outside Bengaluru. On why did the government leave out canteens in Bengaluru from the renaming exercise, Ashoka said: "I do not handle the Bengaluru department portfolio. The CM will make a decision on this."

The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government launched the canteens in Bengaluru in August 2017 ahead of the assembly elections and extended them to rest of the state following their huge success.

Siddaramaiah hit out at the Yediyurappa government for indulging in "cheap politics" by renaming a party-neutral scheme for the poor. He said, "The BJP government's intent to rename Indira Canteens shows it's playing cheap politics. While we are proud of Maharshi Valmiki, Indira Gandhi was a leader of this nation and not restricted to the Congress. It is an absolute shame that BJP is replacing her name with that of Maharshi Valmiki for political gain."

Launching #SaveIndiraCanteen campaign, the former chief minister said, "BJP has neither the power nor the intent to bring pro-poor schemes and it's indulging only in name-changing politics."

Bidar, Mar 4: The Principal District and Sessions Court in Bidar, on Tuesday, granted conditional bail to five functionaries of Shaheen School management — Abdul Qadeer, Allauddin Pasha, Mehtab Sait, Bilal Inamdar and Abdul Khaleq — who moved anticipatory bail in a sedition case slapped against their school recently.

Conditions

Senior advocate B.T. Venkatesh from Bengaluru argued for the petitioners. Managoli Premavati Mallikarjuna granted bail on certain conditions, including execution of personal bond of ₹2 lakh each.

The sedition case was filed against the Shaheen School management for its children staging a play as part of their annual day celebrations on January 21, in which a character had allegedly delivered a dialogue against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

While Nazbunnisa, the mother of the child who had allegedly delivered the dialogue in the play, and Fareeda Begum, the headmistress of the school, were arrested, they were subsequently released on bail last month.

Mangaluru, Mar 24: Seven people were arrested on Tuesday for violating prohibitory orders imposed under Section 144 of CrPC in Mangaluru during the lockdown in Karnataka, Commissioner of Police PS Harsha said.
Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday had announced a complete lockdown in the state till April 1.
"In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the entire state will be locked down from 12 am of March 23 to April 1. People are requested to strictly follow it to contain the coronavirus spread," he said.
Earlier, the state government had ordered the suspending of all public and private transport services.
According to the data compiled by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of the infection-related death toll in the country rose to nine on Tuesday, while the total number of active cases reached 482.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: The spread of COVID-19 in the country has been contained through the prompt, effective and timely measures taken by the Centre, BJP Karnataka president and Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said on Sunday.
 
The Centre brought in stringent regulations including the lockdown at the right time and ensured that the pandemic did not spread rapidly, he told reporters here.
 
Kateel inspected the railway coaches which have been converted into isolation wards for infected patients at the central railway station here.
 
He said 20 out of the 32 railway coaches re-designed into wards by Southern Railway's Palakkad division, will be stationed here.
 
The wards are equipped with necessary medical equipment and facilities for doctors and paramedical staff.
 
Kateel said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown how such difficult situations need to be handled.
 
The lockdown was announced in time so that coronavirus spread was checked and all the central departments carried out their works efficiently to monitor the situation, he said.
 
Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath was also present.
