Karwar, Aug 10: Over 1,900 people who were stranded in high rise buildings in and around Karwar in Uttara Kannada district owing to incessant rains have been rescued by the rescue teams of the Indian Navy in last three days.
On Friday a team of the Navy successfully rescued 450 people trapped inside a high rise building in Mallapur township of Nuclear Power Corporation of India in Karwar taluk.
Officials said that the employees and their families trapped inside the several such buildings have been evacuated.
These families were making distress call as they went without food and drinking water and the snake bites were reported widely. The water level below these buildings was about 2 meters and had reached the alarming point.
On the request of Kaiga administration and district administration total of 2 teams comprising one officer, 13 sailors, three gemini boats, life jackets, life buoys, ropes as well as diving equipment’s have been deployed in the area with one each Gemini boat undertaking evacuation at the flood affected locations.
Indian Naval diving teams deployed in Uttar Kannada and Belagavi districts continued to battle heavy rains necessitating more intense rescue efforts. Incessant heavy downpour in these areas have resulted in water levels rising considerably with strong currents making rescue efforts more challenging navy said.
In addition, a naval helicopter was mobilised to Karwar to render assistance to marooned villagers in the upper reaches of Gangavali river. The crew made several attempts to reach these villages but encountered severe weather forcing them to return to Karwar. The crew have quickly readied the aircraft and awaiting some improvement to resume relief operations in these hilly areas.
