Kasaragod, Feb 18: People across Kerala in general and Kasaragod district in particular today woke up to another bandh, the second in two months, after the murder of two Youth Congress workers in the coastal district’s Periya on last night.

While the Congress had initially invoked the hartal within the jurisdiction of the district, it was expanded soon to the state considering the nature of the attack.

Kripesh and Sarath Lal were travelling by a motorcycle when they were waylaid by an unidentified gang around 8:30 p.m. at Kaliyot near Periya. The duo were reportedly attacked with sharp weapons, following which Kripesh died on the spot. Sarath Lal passed away while being taken to a hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment.

The Opposition Congress put the blame squarely on the ruling CPM, alleging that the attack was carried out at the behest of the local CPM leadership. Dean Kuriakose told the Indian Express that the attack was orchestrated by the CPM.

Mullappally Ramachandran, the state Congress Chief, temporarily stopped his Janamaha Yatra through the state after the attack. He demanded an answer from chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also holds the Home portfolio. He alleged that the murders pointed to the Stalinist side of the ruling party.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi also condemned the murder of the workers. “The brutal murder of two members of our Youth Congress family in Kasargod, Kerala is shocking. The Congress Party stands in solidarity with the families of these two young men & I send them my deepest condolences. We will not rest till the murderers are brought to justice,” tweeted Mr Gandhi.

Both Kripesh and Sarath had been involved in an earlier attack on a CPM worker and their murders now are seen to be retaliatory. Due to the late call of the hartal, many in the state were not aware of the bandh. The model exams, a precursor to the SSLC exams, have been postponed.

Mumbai, Feb 26: Maharashtra cabinet minister and Congress leader Aslam Shaikh on Wednesday said that former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis made an irresponsible statement regarding the Shiv Sena-led state government's 'silence' on AIMIM leader Waris Pathan's remark. He added that as the incident took place in Karnataka, Fadnavis should ask Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa about the matter.

"This is an irresponsible statement given by Devendra Fadnavis. He should ask the same question to the Chief Minister of Karnataka where the statement was given," Shaikh said.

"Fadnavis should ask the same question to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah that why has he not been able to control the violence going on in Delhi," he added.

Earlier, on Tuesday, targeting Shiv Sena's silence over the recent controversial remark by Waris Pathan, Fadnavis said the Uddhav Thackeray-led party might be "wearing bangles" but the BJP was not and knew how to retaliate in the same manner.

"Shiv Sena might be wearing bangles but we are not. If someone says something then he will be given an answer in the same way. BJP has this much power," said Fadnavis while launching a scathing attack on ruling-Shiv Sena in Maharashtra for not taking strict action against Pathan.

On February 20, while addressing an anti-CAA rally, at Kalaburagi in Karnataka, Pathan had said, "Time has now come for us to unite and achieve freedom. Remember we are 15 crores but can dominate over 100 crores."
