Kasaragod: Nurse donates her 10 cents of land to flood relief fund

Kasaragod, Aug 17: In a humanitarian gesture to help the people affected by the floods in different parts of the State, a palliative care nurse at Muliyar in Kasaragod has donated 10 cents of her land to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF).

When she heard about the disaster that hit different parts of the State, Ms. Priyakumari, a resident of Kuttikkol here, decided to give whatever she could to help the affected people rebuild their lives.

“Instead of being sympathetic to the suffering ones, we should do something to help them come out of that,” she said after handing over the land documents to N.A. Nellikkunnu, MLA, at the collectorate on Friday. She also said that when she took the decision, her husband, Ravindran, who is a KSEB employee, as also other family members, supported it.

Ms. Priyakumari said that she had planned to hand over the land for the relief work last year itself, but she could not as she was unaware of the procedures. She said she had 92 cents of land in Kuttikkol.

Ms. Priyakumari has a daughter who is doing her graduation and a son who is a Class IX student. District Collector D. Sajith Babu and ADM N. Devidasan, were also present when she handed over the documents.

Mangaluru, Jul 26: Karnataka government has initiated steps to provide insurance cover for priests and others working in temples coming under the Endowment Department -- a move that will benefit 50,000 people and their families.

Speaking to media here on Saturday evening, Minister for Endowment Kota Srinivas Poojary said there is a need to implement the decision at the earliest to provide relief to the priests and families of employees working in temples.

Department officials have been directed to include employees of state-owned temples under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyothi Bima scheme and also enrol them under State Bank of India’s group personal accident insurance policy at the earliest. The Central insurance scheme will provide Rs 2 lakh cover to family members in case of death due to accidents.

Udupi, Aug 1: A girl child died five persons suffered injuries in a car accident today on National Highway-66 near Ambalpady in Udupi.

According to sources, two couples and children were travelling in the car from Mangaluru to Shikaripura when the tragedy took place. 

The speeding car rammed into the road divider and flipped over after the driver lost control over it near Ambalpady. 

Among the injured, the condition of a woman is said to be critical. She has been admitted to KMC Hospital in Manipal. The other passengers escaped with minor injuries.

A case has been registered at Udupi town traffic police station and investigations are on. More details are awaited.

Bengaluru, May 4: A total of 37 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours in Karnataka taking the total number to 651, State Health Department said on Monday.

"Thirty seven new coronavirus positive cases have been confirmed in Karnataka from 5 pm yesterday to 5 pm today. The total number of cases in the state stands at 651," the department said.

The total number of cases includes 27 deaths and 321 persons who have been discharged. Of the remaining 302 cases, 296 patients are in isolation in designated hospitals and six patients are in ICU.

India has registered 2,553 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours and the total number of cases now stands at 44,532.
