Kashmir will never go to Pakistan; Kashmiris are not slaves of India: Farooq Abdullah

Srinagar, Apr 8: Stating that Kashmiris are not 'slaves' of India, opposition National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said the country must uphold the honour and dignity of the people of Kashmir.

"Unless and until you give us back the respect, the situation in Kashmir won't change. They (India) can't buy us with money even if they build golden roads. They must win hearts and minds of people," Abdullah, three-time Chief Minister, told a gathering at Mandi in border district Poonch of Jammu and Kashmir.

He also said that 'independent Kashmir' was not a reality as the landlocked region is surrounded by three nuclear powers - China, Pakistan and India. "Independence is no option. On one side we have nuclear powers China and Pakistan and on the other India. All have atom bombs. We have nothing except the name of Allah. We have no atom bombs, no army and no jets. How are we going to survive," he said.

Reiterating that gun was not a solution to Kashmir issue, Abdullah, who represents Srinagar Parliament constituency in the Lok Sabha, said that the problem can be resolved only by winning the hearts of people and ending their sufferings.

"Our nation (Kashmir) is not going to Pakistan. Their (Pakistan's) condition is such that they are not able to handle themselves," he said.

The NC chief said the Line of Control should be converted into 'Line of Peace and Goodwill' to enable unhindered people to people exchange and trade between divided parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

"Sooner the two nations appreciate the ground realities, better it would be for bringing thaw in the relations and ending hostilities of all sorts," Abdullah said, adding the wars in the past seven decades have not changed the reality of Line of Control.

Ploy to end quotas

He said the border hostilities were detrimental to both India and Pakistan and any full-fledged conflict will lead to devastation and destruction in the region. Abdullah said the country is passing through a difficult phase as attempts are being made to divide the society in the name of religion and caste and by encouraging sectarian divide. 

He referred to the violence over dilution of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and said such machinations are being engineered to end reservation. The NC chief alleged that the present dispensation at the Centre was working against the interests of farmers, weaker sections, and minorities and expressed concern over growing suicides of peasants.

Feb 1: The Congress on Saturday expressed hope that the Union Budget would provide relief to the salaried class through tax cuts and invest in rural India besides providing a healing touch to the common man and industry facing “hardship” since demonetisation.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the last budget led to crashing consumption levels, soaring unemployment and falling GDP. “Budget 2019= Consumption crashed, Unemployment soared, Farm distress surged, Incomes declined, Investments slumped, Public spending fell, GDP nose dived!,” Surjewala tweeted. “Yet, Modiji gave Corporate Tax Cuts of Rs 1,45,000 crore. Let Budget 2020 give tax cuts to Salaried Class and invest in Rural India,” he said

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot hoped the budget fulfils expectations of the common people. “Budget 2020 is the time for NDA government to provide a healing touch to common people and industries facing hardships since noteban. Hope the budget fulfils expectations of common people and provide relief across sections,” Gehlot said.

New Delhi, Jul 16: With the highest single-day spike of 32,695 cases and 606 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 tally on Thursday reached 9,68,876, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday.

The total number of COVID-19 cases includes 3,31,146 active cases, 6,12,815 cured/discharged/migrated and 24,915 deaths.

As per the Ministry, Maharashtra -- the worst-affected state from the infection -- has a total of 2,75,640 COVID-19 cases and 10,928 fatalities. While Tamil Nadu has a tally of 1,51,820 cases and 2,167 deaths due to COVID-19.

Delhi has reported a total of 1,16,993 cases and 3,487 deaths due to COVID-19.

Meanwhile, as per the information provided by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 1,27,39,490 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till 15th July, of these 3,26,826 samples were tested yesterday.

New Delhi, Mar 3: Delhi's Tihar Prison authorities had made all necessary preparations for the hanging of four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape-and-murder case which was scheduled for Tuesday, officials said Monday.

However, on Monday evening, a city court deferred the hanging till further orders.

Postponing the execution, Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana said the hanging cannot be carried out pending disposal of Pawan Gupta's mercy plea before the President, observing any condemned convict must not meet his "Creator" with grievance against courts for not acting fairly on the opportunity to exhaust legal remedies.

"We had made all the necessary arrangements for the execution of the four convicts which was scheduled for Tuesday at 6 AM. Now, the execution has been postponed and we are waiting for the further order by the court," a senior jail official said.

The hanging of the four men -- Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan -- who are lodged in Tihar jail, was fixed for March 3 in Tihar jail on a court order.

"We had checked the ropes. Hangman was called and dummy executions were carried out," another senior jail official said.

Barring Pawan, the other three had in the previous weeks moved curative petitions and mercy pleas which were all dismissed.

The first date of execution -- January 22 -- fixed on January 7 was postponed by the court to February 1. But on January 31, the court indefinitely postponed the hanging. On February 17, the court again issued fresh date for execution of death warrants for March 3 at 6 AM.

The court in its orders observed that the four convicts cannot be hanged since a mercy plea of one or the other convict was pending.
