Kashmir's Dal Lake gets floating healthcare units

Srinagar, May 19: After starting a floating post office, Jammu and Kashmir government has started a floating healthcare unit for the people living in and around the Dal Lake.

"Initially two Shikaras (boats) equipped with medicines and other diagnostic equipments will be pressed into service with three doctors and para-medics, which will cover the entire Dal area and provide medical services to the needy," state Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma said during the launch of the floating medical unit at Nehru Park on Thursday.

General OPD, lab tests, immunisation, dental care, ante-natal, post-natal, neo-natal checkups besides awareness about various communicable diseases and their preventive measures would be some of the services provided on the unit, Mr Sharma said.

He said Dal Lake dwellers will get free medical services and all those requiring specialised treatment will be referred to the tertiary health institutions, including Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial hospital, Gousia Hospital and Kashmir Nursing Homes.

The Mobile Unit will initially operate twice in a week -- on Wednesdays and Saturdays -- and later the duration will be extended according to the requirements, the minister said.

"Basic healthcare is the fundamental right of every citizen and Dal dwellers will also be provided this facility at their doorsteps," he said.

The medical mobile service, which would be known as Rashtriya Medical Mobile Unit (RMMU), will provide healthcare to 28 hamlets with an estimated population of 30,000 to 40,000, besides thousands of tourists staying in and around Dal lake, an official spokesman said.

The Department of Post launched a floating post office in the Dal Lake recently for the convenience of tourists and Dal dwellers.

Jan 31: President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday hailed the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act as "historic" in his address to joint sitting of both houses of Parliament, prompting protests by some opposition members.

He also said that debate and discussion on any issue strengthens democracy while violence during protests weaken it.

"The Citizenship Amendment Act is a historic law. It has fulfilled wishes of our founding fathers including Mahatma Gandhi," he said.

"Debate and discussions strengthen democracy, but violence during protests weaken democracy," he said without directly referring to the anti-CAA protests in the country some of which have witnessed violence.

In a reference to abrogation of Article 370, Kovind said there is happiness among people of India that people in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have got rights on par with the rest of the country.

The president said Parliament has created record in the first seven months of the new government headed by Narendra Modi by enacting several landmark legislations.

"My government is taking strong steps for making this decade as India's decade and this century as India's century," he said.

New Delhi, Jul 14: India's COVID-19 tally breached the 9 lakh mark as 28,498 new coronavirus cases were reported in the last 24 hours, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday.

As per the Health Ministry, there are a total of 9,06,752 coronavirus cases in the country of which 3,11,565 patients are active cases.

5,71,459 patients have been cured/discharged while one patient has been migrated, the Ministry informed further.

553 more deaths due to COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours in the country, taking the number of patients succumbing to the virus to 23,727.

The Centre further informed that India's recovery rate from COVID-19 stands at 63.02 per cent while the recoveries and deaths ratio stood at 96.01 per cent and 3.99 per cent respectively.

As per the Ministry, Maharashtra -- the worst-affected state from the infection -- has a total of 2,60,924 COVID-19 cases and 10,482 fatalities. While Tamil Nadu has a tally of 1,42,798 cases and 2,032 deaths due to COVID-19.

Delhi has reported a total of 1,13,740 cases and 3,411 deaths due to COVID-19.

As per the information provided by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) 1,20,92,503 samples have been tested for COVID-19 till July 13, of these 2,86,247 samples were tested on Monday.

New Delhi, Aug 7: India's COVID-19 cases tally crossed 20 lakh mark with the highest single-day spike of 62,538 cases on Friday, said Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The COVID-19 tally rises to 20,27,075 including 6,07,384 active cases, 13,78,106 cured/discharged/migrated and 41,585 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

Maharashtra with 1,46,268 active cases and 3,05,521 cured and discharged patients continues to be the worst affected. The state has also reported 16,476 deaths due to the infection.

Tamil Nadu has 54,184 active cases while 2,14,815 patients have been discharged after treatment in the state. 4,461 deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in the state.

Andhra Pradesh with 80,426 active cases is the third on the list. There are 1,04,354 cured and discharged patients and 1,681 deaths reported from the state.

Delhi now has 10,072 active cases and 1,26,116 cured and discharged patients. 4,044 people have lost their lives due to the disease in the Union Territory so far.
