Mangaluru, Jul 2: Local leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party have extended unconditional support to Alva’s Education Foundation and its chairman Dr M Mohan Alva following alleged media trial against the institution in the wake of the suspicious death of a high school student.

Kavya Poojary, a Class 10 student and state level badminton player, was found hanging in the hostel room of Alva’s High School on July 20. Initially, the institution had allegedly tried to cover up the case by calling it a suicide. However, Kavya’s mother has called it a murder.

Addressing a press conference in the city on Wednesday Ganesh Karnik, chief whip of the opposition in Karnataka Legislative Council, demanded immediate halt to what he termed as “witch-hunt” being carried out against school management in social media and a section of visual media. There are vested interests at work to derail the ongoing police probe into the incident, he said.

Karnik said while death of any student is sad, need of the hour is to facilitate the investigating agency carry out a free and fair probe. The school management, headed by Dr M Mohan Alva, has already expressed its willingness to cooperate with Mangaluru City Police that is carrying out the probe, he said, adding selectively targeting the institution with a history of more than three-decade smacks of smear campaign of the worst kind.

He said that such concerted misinformation campaign against a particular institution will also hurt the standing of Dakshina Kannada regarded as education hub of the state and sow seeds of doubts in minds of parents who intend to admit their children to institutions in the district.

Asked about the observations made by V S Ugrappa, chairperson of the expert committee on preventing sexual violence against women and children about shortcomings in Alva's Educational Institutions during his visit there on Tuesday, Karnik  said that the former was acting as the sole constitutional authority in the state.

“Ugrappa has exceeded his charter of duties. All such observations should have been submitted as a report to the government,” he said.

Ugrappa on Wednesday had publicly revealed some of the alleged violations committed by the institution. Though Alva’s High School does not come under residential institution category, the management has established a hostel for its students on the fifth floor of the building.

BJP leaders Sanjeeva Matandoor and Monappa Bhandary were present among others at the press meet.

Jan 14: A police complaint was lodged on Tuesday against BJP West Bengal unit president Dilip Ghosh for his threat to "beat up" and "shoot' " anti-CAA protesters, whom he called "infiltrators".

The complaint was registered in Ranaghat police station of Nadia district by a Trinamool Congress worker Krishnendu Banerjee, who alleged that Ghosh was inciting communal passion.

Addressing a party rally on Sunday in Ranathat, about 80 km from Kolkata, Ghosh went ballistic, saying the governments in BJP-ruled Assam, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh have shot dead "like dogs" those protesting against the new Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Alleging there were one crore infiltrators in the state, Ghosh had accused them of destroying public property worth Rs 500-600 crore during the violent protests against the CAA last month

"Friends, please know these people who are opposing Hindus and Bengalis. In whose interest are they doing this? There are one crore infiltrators. They are having their meals and staying here on our money".

He accused the state's Mamata Banerjee government of remaining silent a spectator to the violence.

"This (violence) happened because there was neither any baton charge, nor firing, nor was any FIR filed. Why? Didi's police did not arrest anybody... because they vote for her".

He then referred to the three states ruled by the BJP.

"In Assam, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, our governments have shot dead these devils like dogs. They were taken elsewhere and then again cases were filed against them. They will come here, eat, stay, and then destroy property. Do they think this is their zamindari?"

He had said once a BJP government was installed in Bengal, "We will hit them with sticks, shoot them and also send them to jail. Our governments have done exactly that. Mamata Banerjee doesn't have the guts to do anything".

However, his incendiary comments did not meet the approval of sections in the party.

Union Minister Babul Supriyo came out with a tweet slamming Ghosh and distancing the BJP from the comments.

"Very irresponsible of Dilip Da to have said what he said. It is a figment of his imagination... BJP governments in UP and Assam have never resorted to shooting people for whatever reason," he tweeted.

Supriyo's tweet was retweeted by nominated Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta, considered close to both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

But Ghosh did not budge and aggressively asked whether the party was being run by Shah or Supriyo.

"People comment according to their understanding. What I feel is that our governments have done it, and so I said all that. If we get a chance we will also do such things," he said, sticking to his earlier comments.

Supriyo also hit back. "Just as he has remarked 'whatever Babul Supriyo has understood he has said', similarly I am saying this is Dilip da's personal opinion, and it has no connection with the party".

Mangaluru, Mar 7: After coronavirus cases were confirmed in different parts of the country, there has been a sudden jump in demand for mask and safety gears like gloves and sanitizers in Mangaluru and Udupi.

With the increase in demand, medical shop owners said that they were finding it difficult to meet the demand.

In fact, there is a demand for bulk supply of masks and gloves. There was demand for masks when Covid-19 was confirmed in China two months ago. Bulk quantities of masks were purchased in order to supply them to Indian employees working in China. A few private firms had purchased masks from Mangaluru in the month of December.
