Kejriwal rents 5-room flat, shuns govt house

Kejriwal_copyNew Delhi, Dec 30: Arvind Kejriwal, who had said no to a government bungalow, has reportedly rented a 5-room flat within a two kilometre radius of the Delhi Assembly. He is likely to shift in two days’ time, said party sources.

Four days before being sworn in as the seventh chief minister of Delhi, he had turned down Delhi Chief Secretary D M Sapoli’s proposal for a bungalow, one of the many perks that a chief minister enjoys.

Ending the capital’s established political culture was one of the key poll promises.

“Neither Kejriwal nor any of our cabinet ministers are taking government bungalows,” said Dilip Pandey, a senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member who denied reports of Kejriwal shifting to a flat near the Assembly, reiterating the AAP’s stand on abolishing “VIP culture”.

“We have said no to big bungalows; he is to shift to a guest house first and then look for a flat,” Pandey added. He also said that the ministers may shift to small government flats.

“It is likely that somebody has offered him the flat for a nominal rent,” said sources. The rent for a 5-room flat in the area could be anywhere close to one lakh rupees.

Sheila Dixit’s 3, Moti Lal Road bungalow will likely remain unoccupied and go into the pool of Director of Estates, Ministry of Urban Development, which may allocate the flats to top government and defence officials.

On the first day as the chief minister of Delhi, Kejriwal was expected to spend the night at his party office at 41, Hanuman Road. “But he didn’t come to the party office,” said Alok Kumar, an AAP member.

“He went to his flat in Kaushambi, (in Delhi’s satellite city, Ghaziabad),” said another AAP member, Sanjay Chawla. Others pointed out that the problem of traffic congestion, long queues of OB vans and

frequent visitors were reasons why their party chief avoided coming to the one-storied office at Hanuman Road.

New Delhi, Jun 5: Around 20 staff members of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have tested positive for COVID-19, all of them are asymptomatic and are doing well, said DMRC officials.

In a statement, the DMRC said, "Along with the rest of the country, DMRC is also fighting the battle against COVID-19. Delhi Metro's employees have shown exemplary resilience in reporting back to their duties to keep the Metro system in all readiness for the eventual resumption of services."

"Some employees, scattered across the NCR have unfortunately been infected by the virus as well. They are all safe and recovering gradually. However, in this hour of crisis as well, the spirit of Delhi Metro continues to be high," the DMRC stated.

DMRC Managing Director, Dr Mangu Singh, in a message today asked all employees to adhere to social distancing norms and wished those afflicted with the virus a speedy recovery.

"This indomitable spirit will surely help the Delhi Metro, whenever we resume our services in the days ahead," said DMRC.

New Delhi, May 14: With a spike of 3,722 new cases in the last 24 hours, the COVID-19 count in India reached 78,003 on Thursday morning, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

As per the latest update by the Ministry, there are 49,219 active cases in the country while 26,235 patients have been cured and discharged, and one migrated, so far.

With 134 new deaths being reported due to the disease since yesterday, the toll due to the disease reached 2,549.

With 25,922 confirmed cases, Maharashtra is the worst affected by the infection in the country so far.

Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, with 9,267 and 9,227, cases respectively are the next worst affected by the disease.

The national capital, Delhi, is just a couple of cases behind the 8 thousand mark as per the update on Thursday morning.

New Delhi, Jul 29: Calling touchdown of Rafale fighter aircraft at Ambala airbase as "historic day" for Indian Air Force and proud moment for India, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that "world-class fighter jets will prove to be a game-changer".

In a series of tweets, Shah congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Indian Air Force and the entire country on this "momentous day".

"Rafale touchdown is a historic day for our vigorous @IAF_MCC and a proud moment for India! These are the world's most powerful machines capable to thwart any challenge in the sky. I am sure Rafale will help our Air warriors to safeguard our skies with its mighty superiority," Shah said in a tweet.

"From speed to weapon capabilities, Rafale is way ahead! I am sure these world class fighter jets will prove to be a game changer. Congratulations to PM @narendramodi ji, DM @rajnathsingh ji, Indian Air Force and the entire country on this momentous day. #RafaleInIndia," he added.

Shah said that Modi government is committed to build India's defence capabilities.

"Induction of these next generation aircrafts is a true testimony of PM @narendramodi's resolve to make India a powerful and secure nation. Modi govt is committed to build on India's defence capabilities. I thank honourable PM for providing this unprecedented strength to our IAF," he tweeted.

Earlier today, the five French Rafale fighter jets touched down at Haryana's Ambala after covering a distance of nearly 7,000 km to join the Indian Air Force.

The jets were given a customary water salute upon their arrival at the airbase, some 220-km from the India-Pakistan border.

The formal induction ceremony of the aircraft would be held later. The aircraft would move out soon to another operational base for operational sorties.

The five Rafale fighter aircraft took off on Monday for India from an airbase in France.
Rafale has multi-directional radar system which can detect 40 targets at the same time in a range of over 100 Kms. It has advance radar warning receiver to identify hostile tracking system a towed decoy system to thwart incoming missile attacks.

Rafale will ensure that our pilots will not have to cross the border to strike the target, that is about 600 Km in enemy territory.

It will get French industrial support for 50 years. India had signed a deal worth over Rs 60,000 crore with France in September 2016 for 36 Rafales to meet the emergency requirements of the IAF.
