Kerala assembly terms cattle ban 'fascist' move, passes resolution

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 8: The Kerala Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution urging the Centre to withdraw the May 23 notification of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, which banned sale of cattle for slaughter through livestock markets.

The Kerala Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution urging the Centre to withdraw the May 23 notification of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, which banned sale of cattle for slaughter through livestock markets.

On a day which saw MLAs savour beef for breakfast at the Assembly canteen before heading for the special session, the note of dissent against the resolution came from O Rajagopal, BJP's only MLA in the house. Backed by the ruling CPM-led Left front and the Congress-led opposition, the substantive motion moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was passed.

The substantive motion highlighted the adverse impact of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017 on states' agricultural economies, food security and trade of cattle and sought immediate withdrawal of the restrictions. “The House seeks from the Centre a validation of the states' rights to formulate policies and laws on state subjects,” the motion said.

“Theories of the sacred cow and ox, which even challenge the ones formulated by Darwin are being imposed upon the people,” CPM veteran and former chief minister V S Achuthanandan said. Rajagopal, the BJP MLA from Nemom, reiterated his party's stance that the ruling and opposition fronts joined hands to target the Centre and make political gains out of a non-issue.

Beef For Breakfast

MLAs who were at the Assembly canteen in the morning found a surprise entry in the breakfast menu – beef fry, quite in line with the issue the House was set to debate minutes later. U Prathibha Hari, CPM MLA from Kayamkulam, said she had the dish as a “protest” against the Centre's curbs on cattle sale. “I don't have beef for breakfast but today, I made an exception,” the MLA said.

Beef dishes are favourites in the canteen's lunch menu but the administrators are learnt to have made an exception for the day as well. Some MLAs sounded pleasantly surprised but were not going to let the treat pass. “It was not planned but when I found it as a special dish, I just had it,” S Rajendran, CPM MLA from Devikulam, said.

Kerala has hosted a series of beef festivals against the cattle sale restrictions, triggering criticism from Sangh Parivar outfits.

Kamal Pant is new Bengaluru police chief; Bhaskar Rao transferred

Bengaluru, Aug 1: The Karnataka government on Friday brought in Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Kamal Pant as the Bengaluru police Commissioner in a reshuffle of police personnel.

Pant comes in as the city police Commissioner in place of Bhaskar Rao.

According to a government order, Rao will handle internal security as ADGP, a post which was lying vacant due to the promotion of P S Sandhu.

Along with the two officials, ADGP B Dayananda who was in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and Economic Offences, has been made the new intelligence chief.

Inconvenience faced by passengers from Dubai at Mangaluru Airport will not be repeated: DyCM Ashwath Narayan

Managluru, May 13: Expressing regret over the inconvenience faced by the first batch of passengers from UAE that landed at Mangaluru International Airport last night, Dr C N Ashwath Narayan, deputy chief minister of Karnataka, today assured that all short comings will be addressed.

Addressing Kannadiga delegates from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and other countries through a video conference, Dr Narayan also assured that necessary steps will be taken by the Karnataka government to provide free quarantine facility for those who cannot afford private quarantine in hotels or guest houses. The video conference was organised by coastaldigest.com.

"The incontinence faced by passengers from Dubai at Mangaluru Airport have already been brought to my notice. All these shortcomings will be addressed. We will take appropriate steps to prevent the recurrence of such inconveniences," he said.

He said that the Karnataka government has already amended its standard operating procedure for international passengers to allow pregnant women to entre home quarantine if they test negative for covid-19.

The problems faced by passengers at Mangaluru Airport last night include lack of staff to handle luggagues, lack of food and water, delay in arranging vehicle to transport passengers to quarantine centres and lack of free quarantine facility for those who cannot afford private quarantine facility. The next batch of repatriates will not face these problems, he said.

Dr Narayan also promised to exert pressur on the union governmment to operate more flights to repatriate stranded Indians, especially Kannadigas from Saudi Arabia.

Action will be taken if guidelines not followed in HDK's son's marriage: DyCM

Bengaluru, Apr 16: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr Ashwath Narayan today said that if former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, being a law-abiding citizen, does not follow guidelines then action will be taken against him.

The Deputy CM made this comment when he was asked about Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil's marriage, which has been fixed on April 17 at a farmhouse near Bidadi in Ramnagar.

Narayan said: "Any violation of the guidelines will not be tolerated. We will ask the concerned authority to film the entire event and document it."

He said that so far Kumaraswamy has made public statements that guidelines will be followed.

"HD Kumaraswamy is a people's representative. He has been in public life for a long time. He should abide by the guidelines," Narayan said.

"Since he has been in a responsible position for a long time and he was the Chief Minister, guidelines must be followed in his son's marriage as per the rules amid COVID-19 scare.

After the marriage, there must not be any excuses. He cannot say that people came without an invitation," the Deputy Chief Minister added.

Kumaraswamy clarified that only his family members will attend the marriage and that there will be around 60 to 70 people.

"All guidelines will be followed as per the central government directives," he said.
