Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 24: The family of a Lithuanian tourist, whose highly decomposed body was recovered from near Kovalam, on Monday demanded a high-level probe into the circumstances leading to her death.

"We demand a special crime investigation team formed to find out what happened to Liga Skromene," her sister Ilze, told reporters here.

"We want justice for Liga," an emotional Ilze said.

ANI also reported Ilze accusing the Kerala police of trivializing her sister's disappearance when she had gone to file a missing person's report, claiming that the police laughed at her and told her that Liga will be found.

Kerala Police had set up a special investigation team to probe into her disappearance, 10 days after the family had filed a missing complaint, she claimed.

"Only 10 days after Liga disappeared had police begun a serious probe to trace her," she said adding her sister was murdered.

A highly decomposed body, with a severed head, was recovered from Thiruvallam near Kovalam on April 21 from a bushy isolated area near a mangrove forest on the banks of Karmana river.

Police had suspected that the body was that of Liga and are awaiting DNA test reports.

Family members had recognised her by her hair and clothes.

Liga's husband, Andrews, said she could not have been where she was found on her own.

He also appealed to the local people to give any information to police if they had seen anything fishy.

"There have been 'serious lapses' in the inquiry by Kerala police," they alleged.

The state government had yesterday promised all help to the family to transport Liga's body to their native place for last rites.

The government had also promised to provide Rs five lakh as immediate relief.

Thirty-three-year-old Liga who had come for Ayurvedic treatment for depression went missing from Kovalam on March 14.

Police had formed an SIT and launched a massive search to trace Liga. They had also announced a reward of Rs two lakh for anyone providing information about the missing woman.

IG, Thiruvananthapuram range, Manoj Abraham would supervise the investigation relating to Liga's death.

DGP Loknath Behara told reporters that the truth should come out.

A woman foreign tourist had come to Kerala and died. A proper investigation will be held to bring out the truth. It is a challenge to the state police, he said.

Bengaluru, May 2: JDS leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy accused the Mandya district administration of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the district and not quarantining 7,000 labourers who arrived here from Mumbai.

"As we know that 16,000 labourers from Mandya were working in Mumbai, out of which 7,000 people have arrived in the district. However, none of them was quarantined properly which is a violation of COVID-19 lockdown," Kumaraswamy told reporters here on Friday.

He claimed the district administration has shown "gross negligence" in their duty in following the procedure of COVID-19 as "one COVID-19 patient's dead body which was brought here from Mumbai has led to more cases in the district and those who accompanied the body have also tested positive for the virus."

Kumaraswamy appealed to the state government to strictly maintain lockdown norms and do not allow any relaxations in view of the rise in COVID-19 cases, stating that "any kind of relaxation could lead to a huge disaster."

Bengaluru, Feb 10: Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar on Sunday hit out at the BJP and RSS for taking out a route march in Ramanagara against the controversial Jesus Christ statue.

“Just because the BJP won 25 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, Congress workers need not lose hope. If the Congress and JD(S) had worked out a better strategy, the BJP would not have won even 10 seats. We will correct our mistakes,” the former Congress minister said.

After the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP has failed to do well in assembly polls and has been losing power in many states. People are hitting the streets protesting against its policies such as CAA and NRC, he said.

Accusing the BJP and RSS of not being able to digest Congress’ victory in the Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha segment in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he said that the BJP is trying hard to make inroads into the constituency represented by his brother D K Suresh. “Let them take out route march, we don’t care,” he said.

“We all know what the BJP did during the Lok Sabha elections, and the media reported how much money they spent in the elections. What was the Election Commission doing? Was the Income Tax Department sitting with its eyes closed? Why did they conduct raids only in Hassan, Shivamogga and Mandya districts,” he asked.

He alleged that false cases were slapped when him and other leaders, including H D Kumaraswamy, Siddaramaiah, G Parameshwara and Dinesh Gundurao.
