Kerala youth who bought raffle ticket just before leaving UAE, wins Rs 13 crore

Abu Dhabi/Alappuzha, Jul 7: The fortunes of a Kerala youth changed overnight after he won Rs 13 crore (7 million dirham) in a raffle in Abu Dhabi. Tojo Mathew (30), a native of Kuttanad had recently quit his job and purchased a ticket before bidding adieu to the gulf nation.

Mathew, who worked as a civil supervisor in Abu Dhabi for the past six years, had resigned from his job recently. He left the UAE on June 24 and just before leaving, he bought a lottery ticket. He got the news about his lottery win this Tuesday.

He told a local newspaper that that he was leaving UAE to be with his wife, who recently got a job in New Delhi. He said that he did not believe it when he first got the news about the lottery win. He will use the money to construct his own house in his hometown.

Apart from Mathew, nine others won lottery worth 27,000 US Dollar. Among the winners are five Indians, one Pakistani and one Kuwaiti national.

6 new covid-19 cases take Karnataka's count to 390 including 16 deaths

Bengaluru, Apr 19: With six new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, Karnataka's total count of coronavirus patients has surged to 390, said the State's Health Department on Sunday.

"Six new cases have been confirmed for COVID-19 in the State from 5 pm yesterday till 5 pm today. Cumulatively, 390 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state," said the Health Department in a statement.

The total coronavirus cases in the State include 16 deaths and 111 discharges.

Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan said that "only essential and critical number of" employees of the Information Technology (IT) companies will be allowed to work from offices from April 20 onwards in Bengaluru, while others will have to continue working from home.

According to the latest update by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of positive cases in India has mounted to 16,116 and 519 deaths have been reported till now.

Karnataka govt to build guest house for Kannadiga pilgrims in Ayodhya

Bengaluru, Aug 8: Anticipating a huge number of pilgrims from Karnataka to start visiting Ayodhya following the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Ram temple, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Friday requested his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath for two acres of land to build a 'yatri nivas' (guest house).

"A large number of pilgrims from Karnataka would be visiting Ayodhya. The government of Karnataka wishes to construct a yatri nivas for the pilgrims visiting Ayodhya," Yediyurappa wrote to Yogi.

"I request you to grant two acres of land in Ayodhya for this purpose," he said.

The Chief Minister said the yatri nivas will be constructed for the benefit of pilgrims from the southern state.

He also congratulated the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for successfully laying the foundation stone for the Ram temple on Wednesday.

Mangaluru, July 31: Extending Eid al-Adha greetings to the people, S M Rashid Haji, president of the Bearys chamber of commerce & industry has termed the festival as a symbol of sacrifice and patience.

“Eid al-Adha commemorates the Prophet Ibraheem’s (a) test of faith and sacrifices. It symbolizes sacrifice and endurance,” he said.

“Every human being during his lifetime faces one or the other test from the Almighty… Now we are collectively facing the hardship... May this festival bring goodness and peace, and herald the end of pandemic,” he said.
