Khan murder: Kejriwal seeks BJP MP's arrest, slams Modi for shielding him

June 20, 2016

New Delhi, Jun 20: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today demanded that BJP MP from East Delhi Mahesh Giri be arrested in connection with the murder of NDMC official M M Khan even as he accused the Prime Minister of "shielding" him.

kejriwalGiri, meanwhile, continued for the second day his hunger strike outside the residence of Kejriwal, demanding that he prove his allegations regarding the murder of Khan.

The BJP MP had asked Kejriwal to either prove his charge against him or "resign" from the post of Chief Minister.

In a tweet, Kejriwal demanded that Giri should be arrested. "He shud be arrested n interrogated by Modi police in MM Khan murder case. Modi police shielding him," he said.

Kejriwal, in a letter to Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, had accused him of trying to "save" Giri and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) vice-chairman Karan Singh Tanwar in Khan's murder.

Giri had asked Kejriwal for a public debate over his allegations. In a letter to Kejriwal on June 16, Giri had invited him to Constitution Club to produce "evidence" he had against him in the M M Khan murder case on Sunday 4 PM.

Kejriwal did not accept the challenge following which Giri, accompanied by his party supporters, reached the Chief Minister's flagstaff Road residence and sat on hunger strike.

Khan, an estate officer of NDMC, was shot dead in Jamia Nagar on May 16, a day before he was scheduled to pass the final order on the lease terms of a hotel which was functioning on a property leased out by the civic body.

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 7: Kerala government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday has come under the spotlight for depicting the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on the cover of the state finance budget 2020-21 document.

Issuing clarification on the same, Issac justified that it is a political statement.

"Definitely, it is a political statement, the cover of my budget speech. It is a painting by a Malayalam artist of Mahatma Gandhi's murder scene. We are sending out a message that we will not forget who murdered Gandhi."

He also alleged that history is being re-written and National Register of Citizens (NRC) is being used to divide the country on communal lines.

"This is important at the times when history is being re-written. There is an attempt to erase some popular memories and use NRC to divide the population on communal lines. Kerala will stand united."

NRC is an official record of those people who are legal citizens of India. The dossier includes demographic information about all those individuals who qualify as citizens of India as per the Citizenship Act, 1955.

The register was first prepared after the 1951 Census of India and since then it has not been updated until recently.

Bengaluru, Jun 26: All efforts would be made to control the spread of coronavirus in the city and there will be no fresh lockdown, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Friday said, asserting that improving economic situation of the state is also equally important.

Though the state capital was considered a model for the entire country in COVID management and has seen a spike in cases during the last few days, the pandemic can be controlled if everyone cooperated, he said.

His remarks come a day after Revenue Minister R Ashoka said Bengaluru is still 'safe' compared to the COVID-19 situation in other cities and states and had ruled out a fresh lockdown for now, putting to rest speculations that it was planning such a move in view of spike in cases.

As of Thursday evening, a total of 1,791 COVID-19 cases, including 78 deaths and 505 discharges, had been reported in the city while the state's tally stood at 10,560 compared to just 3,408 cases as on June 1. The state capital has the highest number of cases among the districts.

"There is no question of imposing lockdown for any reason. In some areas (with high case load) we have already implemented lockdown, other than those places there is no question of it being implemented in other places," Yediyurappa told reporters here.

Improving the economic situation of the state was also equally important, he said ahead of his meeting with Ministers, MLAs and MPs of all parties from Bengaluru to discuss measures to control COVID-19.

"I will discuss with all MLAs including those from opposition and Ministers from Bengaluru and come to some decision. With their cooperation we will make all honest efforts to control the pandemic in Bengaluru," he added.

Earlier, there had been intense speculation after some ministers said the government may have to consider re-imposing the lockdown, eased in phases from the middle of last month, in view of continuing spike in new cases in the past several days. Bengaluru was a "model" to the entire country in COVID management, but in recent days cases have increased, Yediyurappa said, adding to control it cooperation from everyone was necessary.

"I have confidence that if everyone (MLAs) pays special attention in their respective assembly constituency, COVID can be controlled," he said. Meanwhile, official sources said the Chief Minister has given Revenue Minister Ashoka the charge of overseeing the COVID management in the city.
