‘Kill him, kill him,’ screamed godman's bhakts

Sirsa, Aug 27: On Friday afternoon, it was a near-death experience for two journalists from a private news channel.

Rakesh Kumar, 44, a principal correspondent with PTC News, and his cameraman, Shapinder Singh, 23, were surrounded by a mob of around 40 Dera followers armed with sticks, iron rods, and other sharp-edged weapons. While Mr. Kumar escaped with a fractured arm, Mr. Singh lost his camera. They consider themselves lucky to have survived to tell the tale.

It all happened around an hour after the CBI court in Panchkula delivered its verdict, holding Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty of rape. Fearing a backlash, nearly all journalists, who had camped in the media wing of the Dera headquarters, sneaked away minutes before the judgement was announced.

For exclusive footage

Mr. Kumar and Mr. Singh, however, stayed behind in the hope of getting some exclusive footage. Little did they realise that the decision would nearly cost them their lives. When they finally started for the city around 4 p.m. (the Dera is around 14 km from Sirsa city), a mob surrounded their car outside ‘Purana Dera,’ the smaller and older Dera about 3 km from the main one. Some men in the mob wanted to search the car to establish their identity.

“Even before I could react, one of them yelled that he had seen me reporting from outside the Dera. Once they realised we were journalists, they began to attack us. They pulled me and my cameraman out of the car. They smashed the windows and the windscreen, badly damaged the vehicle, and set it on fire,” Mr. Kumar said.

The mob then turned on Mr. Kumar, blaming the media for the situation, and started raining blows on him. While some in the mob shouted, “Kill him, kill him,” an elderly man thrashed him with a lathi, fracturing his right arm. In the commotion, Mr. Kumar somehow managed to extricate himself and fled towards the houses in the nearby Shahpur Begu village.

People to the rescue

Helped by a kind-hearted man in the mob, the cameraman also managed to escape. “We both ran in different directions. A few villagers came to my rescue. One of them took me to a bus stand on his cycle, where I spotted a senior police officer. He then took me to a hospital,” Mr. Kumar said.

Mr. Singh, while seeking directions to the bus stand, ran into a proverbial Good Samaritan who offered him refuge in his house. “I tried to contact Rakesh after I recharged my phone but he was continuously out of reach.

It was only later that I realised that he had forgotten his phone in the car, and it was burnt, along with our clothes, cash, and the camera. Around midnight, I got a call from Rakesh, and we could finally reconnect,” Mr. Singh said. Despite the harrowing experience on his very first assignment, he was determined to pursue a career in journalism, he added.

A three-member team of another Hindi news channel was also stranded inside the Dera following the verdict and rescued on Saturday morning. The trio hid for several hours in a room at one of the hotels inside the Dera. They eventually managed to come out after establishing contact with the local administration.

New Delhi, Mar 19: Hit hard by coronavirus, budget carrier IndiGo today announced that it will cut salaries of senior employees. IndiGo CEO Ronojoy Dutta, who will himself take a 25% cut in salary, said senior vice presidents and above are taking a 20% pay cut while vice presidents and cockpit crew are taking a 15% pay cut.

With precipitous drop in revenues, the very survival of airline industry is now at stake, Dutta said while announcing the pay cut. "We have to pay careful attention to our cash flow so that we do not run out of cash," Dutta said adding that he knew how hard it was for families to take a cut in "take-home pay".

"With a great deal of reluctance and a deep sense of regret, we are therefore instituting pay cuts for all employees, excluding Bands A and B, starting April 1, 2020," the chief executive officer said. Band A and B are the lowest brackets in salary class, where most of the employees are.

IndiGo's flight operations chief Ashim Mitra had written an email to pilots this morning saying that the economic environment has deteriorated significantly and no airline is insulated from this severe downturn.

"It has become a necessity to initiate some tough calls and we are working on a string of measures that will be shared and implemented over the next few days and weeks," Mitra said.

With countries sealing their borders partially or fully across the world due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, aviation sector has been hit extremely hard as most airlines globally have drastically curtailed their flight operations.

Another budget airline GoAir has already terminated contracts of expat pilots amid curtailed operations due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Citing "unprecedented" decline in air travel, the budget carrier announced it was suspending international operations and offering leave without pay programme to its staff on a rotational basis.

Government-owned Air India may also cut salary of employees by 5% amid its growing financial woes particularly in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, which has nearly grounded its entire international operations. The reduction will be across the board, according to a PTI report.

The loss-making airline, which is in the process of a second attempt of privatization after failing to get a single buyer nearly two years ago, has already taken some steps such as reduced flying allowances to cabin crew besides withdrawing entertainment allowance to executive pilots, among others.

“Air India is considering a 5 per cent pay cut to its employees as it faces huge financial crisis due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, which has brought almost its entire international operations save the US, Canada and a few other markets, to the ground," a source told news agency.

In a startling revelation, cybersecurity researchers have claimed that a hacker has posted personal details of nearly 2.9 crore Indian job seekers at one of the hacking forums on the Dark Web for free.

As part of the regular sweep over the Deep Web and Dark Web, researchers from cybersecurity firm Cyble came across an interesting item, where a threat actor posted 2.3GB (zipped) file on one of the hacking forums.

"The leak actually has a lot of personal details of millions of Indians Job seekers from different states," Cyble said in its blog on Friday.

This breach includes sensitive information such as email, phone, home address, qualification and work experience etc from job seekers spanning across states, from New Delhi to Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Cybercriminals are always on the lookout for such personal information to conduct various nefarious activities such as identity thefts, scams, and corporate espionage.

"It appears to have originated from a resume aggregator service given the sheer volume and detailed information," it added.

Cyble indexed this information at ‘AmIbreached.com; – Cyble's data breach monitoring and notification platform.

Cyble researchers have identified a sensitive data breach on the dark web where an actor has leaked personal details of nearly 29 million Indian job seekers from various states.

"Cyble's team is still investigating this further and will be updating their article as they bring more facts to the surface,” it said in a statement.

Cyble said it has acquired the leaked data.

The same cyber security firm earlier exposed that Bengaluru-based edtech firm Unacademy was hacked.

According to Cyble researchers, nearly 22 million Unacademy user accounts were affected and the data was dumped and sold on Dark Web.

'We would like to assure our users that no sensitive information such as financial data or location has been breached," said Hemesh Singh, Co- Founder and CTO, Unacademy, in a statement.

In April, hackers sold personal data of a whopping 267 million Facebook users for just Rs 41,500 (approximately 500 Euros) that includes email addresses, names, Facebook IDs, dates of birth and phone numbers.

No passwords of the 267 million Facebook users were exposed by the hacker, according to Cyble.
