King Salman opens mega airport in Madinah

Jeddah, Jul 4: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman opened the new Prince Mohammed bin Abdul Aziz International Airport in Madinah on Thursday night.

He was met at the airport by Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman and Suleiman bin Abdullah Al-Hamdan, head of the General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA).

The king toured the facility, which has architecture reflecting the city’s traditions and heritage, a local publication reported on Friday.

The king listened to a briefing presented by Al-Hamdan on the airport’s sections, counters, duty-free market, restaurants and departure gates.

There was an opening ceremony held which started with a recitation from the Qur’an.

The new airport, built on an area of 4 million square meters, would in its first phase handle 8 million passengers a year, increasing the number to 18 million in the second phase, and then 40 million after the third and final phase.

GACA has been operating the airport on a trial basis since April to check systems. It is the first airport in the Kingdom constructed and operated entirely by the private sector.

The king left for Jeddah after the ceremony.

He was seen off by several princes, ministers and senior officials. On arrival at King Abdul Aziz International Airport, the king was welcomed by Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majid, and other princes.

King Salman has meanwhile sent a message to Jordan’s King Abdallah on strengthening bilateral ties, and taking coordinated action to serve the interests of Arab and Muslim nations.

Sami bin Abdullah Al-Saleh, Saudi Ambassador to Jordan, handed the message to Prince Faisal bin Al-Hussein.

Riyadh, Apr 26: The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia has issued an order to partially lift the curfew in all regions of the Kingdom, to become from 9am to 5pm, starting Sunday through Wednesday May 13, while keeping a 24-hour curfew in the holy city of Makkah and in previously isolated neighbourhoods, state news agency (SPA) said early on Sunday.

The order also allowed the opening of some economic and commercial activities, which include wholesale and retail shops in addition to malls.

They can operate for two weeks, beginning on April 29 (Wednesday) until May 13 (Ramadan 6-20), however, certain shops within malls like beauty clinics, barber salons, gyms, cinemas, and restaurants will continue to be restricted from reopening.

A massive fire engulfed a residential tower in UAE's Sharjah last night. The building has been identified as one Abbco Tower in Al Nahda.

According to the latest inputs, Sharjah Civil Defence teams rushed to the spot and evacuated all residents. 

Firefighters managed to douse the blaze after several hours. The building in question is reportedly a 48-storey structure. Officials are yet to reveal the cause of the fire.

All residents of the building were evacuated while seven incurred minor injuries during the evacuation and were treated at local hospitals, reported the United Arab Emirates' local media.

More details are awaited as this is a developing story.

Muscat, Jan 11: Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said has died, Aljazeera reported citing state television on Friday.

Qaboos was 79-year-old and was ill for a long time. He has served as the ruler of Oman since 1970 when he ousted his father in a bloodless coup.

Qaboos had no children and has not publicly named his successor.

Sultan Qaboos travelled to Belgium for a week in December for what was described then as "medical checks." He returned to Oman but speculations of his deteriorating health were rife.
