KMC Hospitals organize walkathon for arthritis patients

Mangaluru, Oct 31: KMC Hospitals part of Manipal Health Enterprises on Saturday organized a walkathon for patients that have had treatment for arthritis – joint replacement or other drug treatments. The walkathon aimed to break the myth that people who have undergone knee surgery cannot lead a normal life and walk like before. The event witnessed a participation of 30 patients who have successfully undergone knee surgeries and others with multiple joint arthritis that have undergone treatment with rheumatological and immune system modifying drugs.

Arthritis is a common problem across all age groups (including children, adults & old people) and almost 15% of Indian population suffers from this condition. The condition can be treated successfully with medications and surgeries but due to lack of awareness people usually ignore the symptoms.

KMC Hospital has successfully performed various simple, complicated and revision knee & hip joint replacement surgeries. With competent & highly specialized Rheumatologists & Joint Specialist surgeons cases have been dealt with great efficiency and finesse. There are various forms of arthritis. Among young adults Ankylosing Spondylitis which causes pain the back and neck, Gout is related to high uric acid levels, Rheumatoid Arthritis occur mainly in the hands, wrists, elbows, feet, knees and hips and leads to rapid destruction of the joints and disability. Psoriatic Arthritis associated with skin disease, Reactive Arthritis Joint pains follow an episode of infections, Post-viral Arthritis occurs following a viral infection, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) (and other Connective tissue diseases (CTD) is a more serious multi-system disease and tends to affect many organs. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis occurs in children between the age group of 2 – 16 years, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) associated arthritis symptoms include recurrent loose stools with blood. ‘Osteoarthritis which is the most common cause for joint pains among the elderly patients related to wear-and-tear of the joints over years and is mostly seen in the knees and hips.

Osteo Arthritis if ignored can be more damaging than even a stroke. Immobile and elderly people get more prone to fractures as bones become weaker with decreased mobility. Similarly consumption of various prescribed and non-prescribed drugs can have harmful side effects on the patient. Untreated osteoarthritis itself is self- propagating: by avoiding mechanical pressure on an affected joint, one strains the neighbouring joints, overall increasing the risks and making for further complexities in treatment.

Bengaluru, Apr 17: The Karnataka government has announced the purchase of an additional two lakh rapid test kits for COVID-19 detection at a task force meeting on Thursday.

Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and other senior officials were present at the task force meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwathnarayan.

The Chinese government has agreed to supply rapid test kits to an officially listed company, which will increase the number of tests once it arrives, Ashwathnarayan said.

Moreover, 250 kiosks will be set up in the state to collect saliva samples of a person with COVID-19 symptoms. Such kiosks will be launched one-by-one in taluks of the state.

Ashwathnarayan explained that this would increase the sample collection process and prevent the spread of disease.

Ashwathnarayan said the purchase of the required 25,000 RT-PCR kits was also approved.
He stated that COVID-19 patients should be treated at government-appointed hospitals. A separate coronavirus helpline will be made operational to address the queries of people, Ashwathnarayan said.

During Ramadan, it has been decided not to allow mass prayers, he said. And added that tracing of cases related to the Tablighi Jamaat meeting in Delhi has been completed in the state.

New Delhi, Jan 9: A total of 10,349 people involved in the farming sector, including 5,763 farmers or cultivators, committed suicide in 2018, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)'s report on 'Crime in India-2018' reveals.

The annual data was released around three months after the government released the NCRB report on 'Crime in India-2017'.

As per the latest data, of the 10,349 persons, who committed suicide in 2018, 4,586 were agricultural labourers.

The number of suicides in the farming sector in 2018 accounted for 7.7 per cent of the total suicide-victims (1,34,516) in the country, the NCRB data said.

Suicides in the country in 2018 rose to 1,34,516 from 1,29,887 in 2017.

The rate of suicides was up from 9.9 per cent in 2017 to 10.2 per cent in 2018. In 2017, a total of 10,655 farming sector-suicides were reported.

West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Goa, Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, Delhi, Lakshadweep and Puducherry reported zero suicides of farmers or cultivators and agricultural labourers during 2018, said the report.

Bengaluru, Apr 7:  A group of Muslim philanthropists including a woman were allegedly assaulted by a group of people while they were distributing necessary food items to the needy at Dasarahalli of Amruthahalli Police Station limits in the city.

An FIR has also been registered in this regard and two people have been taken under police custody.

Twenty-three-year-old Syed Tabrez, son of Zarin Taj, secretary of Swaraj Abhiyan's local unit and his mother and friends were attacked by some unknown miscreants at Dasarahalli of Amruthahalli police station limits on Monday while they were distributing essential items to the needy amid the COVID-19 lockdown.

"The incident occurred on Monday. An FIR was filed by the woman stating that she was assaulted by some people. On receiving the information, our officers rushed to Ambedkar Hospital and spoke to one of the victims. As per the complaint, Vidyaranya Pura and Amruthahalli Police have secured two people.

The investigation is underway. It is not a case of communal hatred," said Dr Bheemashakar Guled, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), North-East Bengaluru.

Tabrez has suffered minor injuries on his right hand and right leg while others have also suffered minor injuries. They have been discharged from the hospital.

The incident occurred at around 6 pm yesterday when some people came on a motorcycle, carrying bats and started thrashing Tabrez along with others, as per the FIR. Later, the injured people went to Amrutahalli Police Station and filed a complaint there.

Later they went to the Bowring Hospital which was closed. Then, they went to Dr Ambedkar Hospital in KG Halli.

Syed's mother said the accused persons threatened us, saying that "Muslims are poisoning the rations. You people will not deliver the food here. Muslims will have to leave the slum and relocate themselves somewhere else."
