Kohli, Dhoni slide down; Shami gains 14 places in ODI rankings

Brisbane (Australia), Mar 3: Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni slipped down the ladder to be fourth and 10th respectively, while Shikhar Dhawan retained his seventh spot in the latest ICC ODI batsmen's rankings released here today.

Shami ODI rankingsIn the ODI bowlers' chart, however, Indian pacer Mohammad Shami and Ravichandaran Ashwin made upward movements. While Shami gained as many as 14 places to be at 11th now, Ashwin's eight wickets in the ongoing cricket World Cup so far helped him climb six spots to 16th.

There have been a plenty of reshuffle in the rankings at the end of 23 pool matches in the World Cup, currently being staged in Australia and New Zealand.

Kohli has slipped a rung but is still the best-placed Indian batsman at fourth position, while skipper Dhoni has lost two places to be at 10th.

Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina are the other Indian batsmen to be figuring in the top-20 list. Even though Rohit has lost three places to be at 16th, Raina has climbed up four positions to be at 20th.

Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, who is currently the leading run-scorer in the cricket's biggest spectacle with 268 runs, has moved up two places to join South Africa's Hashim Amla in second place. The batting table is headed by South Africa captain AB de Villiers, who leads by 49 ratings points.

While none of the Indian bowlers figure in the top-10, both Shami and Ashwin's progress has been significant. However, injured an Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja have both lost four places each to be at 17th and 18th.

The bowlers' list is still topped by Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal, even though he is not a part of the squad in the mega-event.

Meanwhile, India's Jadeja has managed to retain his seventh position in the ODI all-rounders' table, which is now headed by Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan, who has become number one following his 229 runs with the bat and three wickets with the ball in the World Cup so far.

In team rankings, Australia continue to lead the field with 120 ratings points, while world champions India are second, four points behind. South Africa, on 113 ratings points, are third, and Sri Lanka fourth.

Following New Zealand's four wins in as many matches and England's three defeats in four games, the two sides have swapped places. New Zealand is now fifth, just one ratings point behind Sri Lanka, while England are now sixth, eight rating points ahead of Pakistan.

Colombo, Aug 1: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has expressed his interest in playing the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), scheduled to start from August 28.

Pathan is among 70 foreign players to have shown interest in playing the LPL, ESPNcricinfo reported.

It is believed that Pathan has taken permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take part in the competition. 

BCCI doesn't allow active players to participate in other T20 leagues but Pathan announced his retirement in January this year.

Former swashbuckling all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also played in a foreign league last year. He played for Maratha Arabians in the T10 League in Abu Dhabi.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Pathan will now be put in a player draft unless one of the five franchises choose him to be a marquee player. The details of the draft, and the franchise owners, are yet to be finalised and announced. 

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is also waiting on some government clearances even as it decides on franchise owners. The five franchises will represent Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna.

On Monday, SLC Executive Committee granted approval for the tournament.

"The 23 match League will be played on the four international venues of R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Rangiri Dambulu International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium. Five teams named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna will participate in the League," SLC said in a statement on Monday.

Sri Lanka has controlled the spread of COVID-19 better than many other cricket-playing nations.

Jeddah, Jan 9: Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde criticised the new Supercopa format and said that "football has become a business and as a business it looks for income".

"The bottom line is football has become a business and as a business it looks for income. That's the reason we are all here," Goal.com quoted Valverde as saying ahead of Barca's semi-final against Atletico.

"It's a completely different format to what we're used to. It was always the first title and the opener of the season and to me, that seemed fine," he added.

The Supercopa was traditionally a two-legged affair played between the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey at the beginning of the season, but following last term's one-off meeting between Barca and Sevilla in Tangier, Morocco, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) went ahead with a full revamp.

Instead of just two teams being involved, the Supercopa has been expanded to also include the runners-up from La Liga and the Copa - meaning Barca and Valencia are joined by Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. It is also set to be hosted in Saudi Arabia for the next three editions.

"It's been changed and let's see, it will be judged once it has happened. It's interesting, with four good teams, but from a sporting point of view, I'm not sure," Valverde said.

"We must bear in mind that the football we are involved in is an industry, sources of income are sought and in the same way that there are special connotations in this country, there are also in Morocco, where we played last year," he added.

Barcelona will face Atletico Madrid in the semifinal of the Supercopa at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on January 10.

Jul 21: The tickets sold for the now-postponed ICC T20 World Cup will remain valid if Australia hosts the edition in 2021 instead of India.

In case the event is shifted to 2022, all ticket-holders will be entitled to a full refund, the ICC stated on its website on Monday night after postponing the mega-event this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The tournament was to be held in October-November but will now be conducted later because of the pandemic.

The ICC has not yet announced which country will host which edition as there are operational issues that both the Indian and Australian cricket Boards need to sort out.

The world body had opened ticket booking through its ticketing partners and a significant number was already sold.

"Ticket holders are welcome to retain their tickets, noting, if Australia hosts in 2021, tickets will remain valid for fans who have already bought and will be automatically updated to reflect the new dates.

"If Australia hosts in 2022, for tickets already bought a full refund will be processed automatically," ICC stated in a series of FAQs.

Fans can retain their tickets until a date is confirmed for the event.

Refund requests can be made until December 15 and they will be processed within 30 days after an online submission.

The hospitality package will also remain valid for the 2021 fixtures.
