Mangaluru, Aug 31: Konkani Writers and Artistes Association (KWAA) has accused Mangaluru-based Mandd Sobhann, a recipient of government grant, of indulging in character assassination and abuse of leading Konkani writers and artistes. The association has charged Mandd Sobhann Gurkar Eric Ozario of using yellow journals and web media for using derogatory language to abuse leading Konkani luminaries.

Konkani Manavi

In a letter to the Chief Minister the association says Eric Ozario has used unparliamentarily words to insult the proud son of Karnataka, Melvyn Rodrigues, who is also the Sahithya Academy Award winner as spineless and a man who has no essential body organs below the waist'. He has also abused writers and artistes calling Gowda Saraswath Brahmins (Konkane) as fathers of Konkani artistes and writers. He has also likened Konkani writers to Koragas (Harijans) comparing them to those who used to wait outside homes of people to eat leftover food and thus indulged in caste abuse.

In its bylaws Mandd Sobhann which is registered under Society's Registration Act clearly states that it works for the unity, integrity and communal harmony of Konkanis spread across Karnataka, Goa, Cochin, Diu and Daman without discriminating them on religious bases as Hindus, Christians and Mulsims. The different types of scripts used to write Konkani language is used as a tool by Mandd Sobhann to create discord between Konkani speaking people of Goa and Karnataka.

To carry out these evil activities it has established several letterhead organisations making Shakthinagar as its base. Eric Ozario is the Gurkar of all these letterhead organisations and the mastermind behind the various wicked activities carried out through them. In the name of these organisations he holds press conference and creates a fear among people saying he would organize public protests and is also creating an atmosphere of fear in the minds of common Konkani speaking people. He is also resorting to character assassination of eminent Konkani writers and artistes by using web media and yellow journals.

It is a matter of great concern to note that the state government has allotted Rs. 2.5 crore grant in the 2016 budget for Mandd Sobhann which is blatantly carrying out disruptive acts like caste abuse, insults, , maligning name of writers and is creating hatred and ill-will among Konkani speaking people belonging to different religions. This is in fact giving credence to the prevailing belief among the enlightened people of Mangalore that by giving grant to Mandd Sobhann government is encouraging this institution which is inimical to promoting harmonious relationship.

Taking into consideration all these aspects KWAA members have written a letter to the Chief Minister of Karnataka requesting him to withhold the grant given to Mandd Sobhann and also to cancel its registration as part of the disciplinary action. Office bearers of KWAA Ronald J Sequeira, Florine Roche, Roshan Madtha and Member Henry Mendonca handed over the letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada along with suitable records to substantiate the charges. Copies of the letter have been sent to the Chief Minister of Goa, the Prime Minister, and to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, government of India.

Shivamogga/Hubballi, Feb 10: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday reiterated portfolios for all new ministers will be distributed on Monday and the exercise was not completed sooner only because of weekend holidays.

“I had completed all the formalities on the portfolio allocation,” Yediyurappa said, appearing to rubbish rumours that the delay was caused due to a tussle over portfolios. “However, considering it was a weekend, I decided to postpone handing them out. On Monday all portfolios will be announced.”

The CM also promised to induct loyalists into his council of ministers, admitting Umesh Katti, Hukkeri legislator, should not have been left out. Speaking in Shivamogga earlier in the day, Yediyurappa said Katti was scheduled to take oath last week along with the 10 defectors, but the decision was scrapped at the last minute due to “unavoidable reasons”. “But I have discussed the issue with Katti. Considering he is from North Karnataka and that we have worked together for many years, he will be included in the cabinet soon,” Yediyurappa said.

When questioned on more prominent legislators from his home district missing out — especially Thirthalli Arag Jnanendra — he said a “different responsibility” has been given to him and has already explained why he could not be inducted.

Yediyurappa refused to react to comments by former chief ministers Siddaramaiah and HD Kumaraswamy on government’s survival, saying he would rather concentrate on the state’s development. “It is common for the opposition to criticize the government, but I’m busy preparing for the budget, which will be presented on March 5. I am concentrating on my work,” he said.

In Davangere, Yediyurappa said he is committed to increasing internal reservation for the Valmiki community under the ST quota from 3% to 7.5%, apart from considering a separate department for the community to address their issues. Speaking at a Valimik community event, Yediyurappa said Justice Nagamohan Das has been asked to submit his report at the earliest to bring in reservation.

In Mysuru, chief minister Yediyurappa’s son and BJP Yuva Morcha general secretary BY Vijayendra on Sunday said the district will get representation in his father’s cabinet soon, pointing to the six existing vacancies. He said former minister AH Vishwanath will be made a minister as Yediyurappa is known for delivering on his promises. Speaking to reporters, he said his father has expanded his council of ministers, ensuring there were no complaints and he will include more legislators given that there are six more vacancies.

Bengaluru, Jul 18: Bringing a major change in the  administration of Bengaluru, which has emerged as a Covid-19 hotspot, the state government on Saturday transferred B H Anil Kumar out of the BBMP and brought N Manjunath Prasad to take his place.

Manjunath Prasad, who headed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) before being replaced by Kumar, will take over with immediate effect. The government has also placed him in concurrent charge of the Revenue Department as well as the Disaster Management, Bhoomi and UPOR.

Kumar, an Additional Chief Secretary, has been put in a place where earlier a secretary was posted. He now heads the Department of Public Enterprises. The posting would have brought him two spots down had it not been for the government upgrading it to the level of additional chief secretary.

Anil Kumar, who was earlier praised for his work to contain the coronavirus pandemic, had faced criticism by the High Court of Karnataka for the BBMP's failure to help people in containment zones as well as other issues on the spread of the pandemic.

Sources in the government said, pressure has been building up against Anil Kumar over the last two months after most of the Bengaluru MLAs complained to the chief minister's office.

"No MLA backed him. Everyone had a problem," a source said.

Things came to the head with regard to a Rs 436 crore project given to KRIDL. "The issue reached the chief minister's office as all the MLAs took an issue with the way the project was awarded," a source said.

Another source said that Kumar came under fire after a central team flagged the issue of failing Covid-19 surveillance measures in Bengaluru. The central team's criticism, it is widely believed in the government, came as the last straw.
