Kundapur school van mishap: 5-year-old girl still battling for life

Udupi, Jun 26: One of the injured schoolchildren in last Tuesday's road mishap at Trasi still battling for life at a private hospital in Manipal, here.

Sources of KMC Hospital said that 5-year-old Lizel Crasta, whose condition is critical, is still under observation.

However, she has been taken off the ventilator and is breathing on her own, they said.

Three of the injured children who were undergoing treatment at the same hospital were discharged on Friday. They are Minora Risha Dias, 10, Mario Olivera and Oprah Crasta, 7.

Eight children, all aged below 14, were killed and nearly a dozen others injured in a horrific road accident on June 21 morning at Trasi village in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district.

As many as 17 children were on their way to Don Bosco School in Trasi village in a mini-van amidst rain when a private bus heading to Kundapur rammed into it.

Bengaluru, Apr 26: A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Vijayapura district in Karnataka for posting the photograph of a COVID-19 girl patient as his whatsapp status photo with a derogatory message, police said.

Anil Rathod on Saturday posted the picture of the girl student as status message with a caption, "Bad News Student got Positive"

By putting her photograph as his whatsapp status message, he tried to create fear among the masses and intentionally defamed her by making her photo go viral, the the police said in a statement.

It is an offence to reveal the identity of the COVID-19 patients by taking the photograph and putting it in the public domain, the police said.

Rathod has been booked under for spreading rumours and causing panic, they said.

Bengaluru, Feb 26: The police remand of student activist Amulya Leona Noronha, who was produced before a Magistrate, after a no-show at the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, was extended by 10 more days.

The Fifth Additional Metropolitan Magistrate at the Magistrate's home on Tuesday night had remanded her to police custody for 10 days, less than the 14 days asked for by the Special Investigative Team, considering that she has already spent over four days in judicial custody.

Amulya Noronha, a student of NMKRV College for Women, had raised pro-Pakistan slogans by shouting ''Pakistan Zindabad'' at an anti-CAA protest in Bangalore on 20th February following which the city police filed a case of sedition against her.

Mumbai, Apr 15: A 35-year-old man, who worked as a priest in suburban Kandivali, allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday afternoon, hours after learning that lockdown to contain coronavirus has been extended.

The deceased was identified as Krishna Pujari, native of Udupi in Karnataka, who was attached to Durga Mata temple in Iraniwadi area of Sanjay Nagar.

Pujari, who lived with three other priests, was waiting for the lockdown to end as he wanted to go back to his hometown, a police official said.

When he learnt that the lockdown has been extended till May 3, he was terribly depressed and allegedly hanged himself in kitchen, the official added.

No suicide note has been found, he said.
