Leaders desert Cong headquarters, workers bat for Priyanka

October 19, 2014

New Delhi, Oct 19: The Congress headquarters in the national capital Sunday wore a deserted look after the drubbing the party received in the assembly elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. Only a group of workers was around, demanding a bigger role for Prianka Gandhi in the party.Priyanka

No leaders were available at the party headquarters to comment on the poll debacle. Party spokesman Ajay Maken came in the morning, but as it became clear that the Congress was headed to the defeat in both states, which it held so far, he too left the office.

Jagdish Sharma, a local Congress worker, told media persons that the reason behind the electoral debacle of the Congress was the diconnect between the cadre and the leadership.

"We are losing elections because the disconnect between the leaders and the cadre is very glaring. We do not have any access to the top leaders or the high command," Sharma said.

Earlier in the day, about 100 party workers gathered at 24 Akbar Road, the party's head office, and batted for Priyanka Gandhi's formal induction into the grand old party.

The workers, mostly women, carried banners showing Priyanka Gandhi's portrait and raised slogans "Priyanka Gandhi Congress Bachao" (Priyanka Gandhi save Congress) and "Priyanka lao, desh bachao" (Bring Priyanka and save the country).

"Priyanka Gandhi should be inducted into the party. She should help party vice president Rahul Gandhi to rebuild Congress," Sharma said.

Maharshtra Congress leader Priyanka Chaturvedi, however, said that there was no need to despair as the party has shown a better performance in both states compared to what it did during the general elections held in April-May this year.

"In democracy, some people lose and some win. In these elections, though we lost, we have shown a better performance compared to the parliamentary elections," Chaturvedi told media persons.

Pradip Singh Zaildar, member of campaign committee of the Congress in Haryana, said incumbent chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was to blame for the defeat.

"There was no Modi (prime minister Narendra Modi) wave in Haryana. Hooda is completely responsible for the loss. He was driven by self interest and was not thinking about the party. His slogan 'Agli sarkar Hooda sarkar' (the next government will be Hooda government) also showed he turned this election into a personal affair," Zaildar told IANS. The BJP is slated to form the government in Haryana on its own and has emerged as the single largest party in Maharashtra.

New Delhi, Feb 13: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has congratulated AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal for his party's stupendous victory in the Delhi Assembly polls, saying the people of the national capital will continue to benefit from his leadership.

Responding to the Dalai Lama's statement, Kejriwal in a tweet on Wednesday said, "Am humbled by the kind words and blessings from His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Thank you very much @DalaiLama."

Referring to the Happiness Curriculum for government schools in Delhi, the Dalai Lama said he has a deep admiration for the efforts the AAP government has made towards "shaping better, happier human beings with improved values".

"These measures will have a positive impact on children's overall education, as well as helping the poor to fulfil their dreams of improving their lives," he said.

He also lauded the AAP government's initiative to incorporate aspects of inner mental development into the school curriculum.

"Through such initiatives, you are showing a path to the rest of India," the Dalai Lama added.

In a near-repeat performance of 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday retained power with a stunning victory, winning 62 of the 70 assembly seats and leaving the BJP with just eight seats.

New Delhi, May 7: Air India has opened bookings for eligible foreign nationals and valid visa holders of the UK, the USA and Singapore for outbound repatriation flights that will be operated between May 7 and May 14 under the Vande Bharat mission, officials said.

Foreign nationals or valid visa holders will be charged the same fare as Indian nationals who want a seat on the inbound repatriation flights, they said.

For all flights between India and the USA under the Vande Bharat mission, Air India is charging a fixed fare of Rs 1 lakh per passenger.

For flights between India and Singapore, the charge is Rs 18,000-20,000 per passenger, and it is Rs 50,000 per person for India-UK flights.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs had clarified that a person who has an Overseas Indian Citizenship (OCI) card, or citizenship of a foreign country, or a valid visa of more than one year of that country, or the green card of that country can travel on repatriation flights leaving India under the Vande Bharat mission.

Air India will be conducting 64 flights to 12 countries between May 7 and May 13 to bring back approximately 15,000 Indians stranded due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had announced on Tuesday.

However, some flights have been delayed and therefore, this set of 64 flights will be operated between May 7 and May 14, the airline officials said.

On Wednesday, an Indian businessman and his cook landed at Delhi airport from Lusaka in Zambia in a plane that was supposed to come without any passengers, senior government officials said.

The private chartered aircraft was scheduled to come empty and take around 40 Zambian nationals to Lusaka in a repatriation flight, they added.

"We had not permitted any incoming passengers. We will seek explanation from the airline (private operator) as to how it happened. BOI (Bureau of Immigration) has a very stringent protocol for dealing with such deviations, which must have been acted upon," said a senior official of aviation regulator DGCA.

It is not clear if the businessman and his cook were deported or sent to a quarantine facility within India.

India has been under a lockdown since March 25 to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. All scheduled commercial passenger flights have been suspended during the lockdown.

However, cargo flights, medical evacuation flights and special flights permitted by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have been allowed to operate during this time.
