Bengaluru, Jan 17: A dawn-to-dusk Karnataka bandh called by pro-Kannada outfits on January 25 to press for the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Mahadayi river water sharing row between the state and neighbouring Goa is likely to throw normal life out of gear in many parts of the state.

Several pro-Kannada organisations on Wednesday extended their support to the Karnataka bandh.

Speaking to reporters, Vatal Nagaraj of Kannada Okkuta said all Kannada organisations, the Kannada filmdom, hotel owners and educational institutions should support the bundh. Goa Irrigation Minister Vinod Palyekar should apologise for his derogatory comments against Kannadigas, he added.

Nagaraj claimed that about 2,000 pro-Kannada outfits backed the bandh call. He said the organisations had decided to speak to government officers and employees, lorry owners, fuel service stations, education institutions and appeal to them to cooperate in ensuring that the bandh is a success.

What is this bandh for? It is really foolish to distrupt the daily chores of public life, just because somone in another state made a foolish statement. Just imagine the losses to business and the state economy! If we want to punish Goa, then force them to stop their business for one day! It is foolish that we have to bear their curse and also lose our business.

yes, this is required to mark our unity as Kannadigas. Goa Minister should be punished for this Filthy Comment on us. Is GOA CM sleeping? He should Apologise to Kannadigas. Also Minister shud be dismissed such horrible comment.

Bengaluru, Jul 11: Karantaka Congress chief DK Shivakumar on Friday raised questions over claims that Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project Madhya Pradesh was "largest in Asia" and said a 2000 MW had been built in the state.

"BJP central government is claiming today that it inaugurated Asia's largest solar plant of 750 MW at Rewa, MP. What then is the 2000 MW Solar Plant in Pavagada, Karnataka which was built in just 3 years by Karnataka Congress government and has been operational since 2018?" Shivakumar said in a tweet.

The Congress leader further said that the most unique thing about the solar project set up in Karnataka was that the farmers were being paid yearly rents for the land upon which it was constructed as it had been leased and not purchased from them, helping them retain ownership.

"The unique thing about the 2000 MW Pavagada Mega Solar Park was that not a single acre of land was acquired from the farmers. All 13,000 acres have been leased from the farmers who are being given yearly rent. Karnataka model of renewable energy was accepted as the best in India," he said.

"Union power minister must answer as to how the Central Government can claim that the Rewa Solar Park (750 MW) opened today is Asia's largest when clearly the Pavagada Park in Karnataka is much larger (2000 MW) and was opened two years back!" he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project to the nation on Friday.

Mangaluru, Apr 17: Authorities in Dakshina Kannada have announced a fresh coronavirus positive case. The patient is a resident of Uppinangady in Puttur taluk.

With this the total number of covid-19 positive cases in this coastal district mounted to 13 even though most of the patients have recovered and returned home after treatment.

In past twelve days this is the first coronavirus case reported in the district.

It is learnt that the 39-year-old had been to Delhi. He was home quarantined for past few days. His throat swabs were tested positive for the deadly disease today.

Mangaluru, Aug 1: Former member of Karnataka Legislative Council Ivan D’Souza has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. 

The Congress leader took to social media to break the news. “I and my wife Dr Kavitha have been tested positive covid-19 positive. There are no symptoms. We had voluntarily given our throat swabs for testing,” he said in a Facebook post.

He also requested his friends and well-wishers not to visit him until he recovers. 

Mr D’Souza had participated in a party meeting at Congress Bhavan when KPCC chief DK Shivakumar visited city yesterday. He was seen meeting several Congress leaders including U T Khader.
