Lok Sabha adjourns sine die; fails to take up no-confidence notices

New Delhi, Apr 6: The Lok Sabha was today adjourned sine die with the House unable to take up notices for a no-confidence motion against the government and bringing to close a tumultuous Budget session that witnessed repeated disruptions.

Protests by AIADMK and Congress members over setting up of the Cauvery river management board as well as by TDP members demanding special status for Andhra Pradesh marked the last day of the session today.

As soon as the House met for the Question Hour, members began to protest and sloganeering despite repeated requests from Speaker Sumitra Mahajan asking them to go back to their seats. "Today is the last day. If you are not ready... I will sine die the House," a visibly peeved Mahajan told the agitating members. The Speaker also said that she wanted to take up notices for a no-confidence motion. "I am sorry... if you don't want to take up (notices for a no-confidence motion," she said and proceeded to read out a brief summary of the Budget session and its second leg which began on March 5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in the House.

Members of both the AIADMK and the Congress holding placards trooped into the Well even before proceedings began for the day. While the AIADMK was demanding immediate setting up of the Cauvery river management board, some Congress members from Karnataka were opposing it. When the Speaker was reading out the summary, members from the TDP were standing in the Well holding placards.

New Delhi, Jun 13: India's COVID-19 tally on Saturday witnessed its highest-ever spike of 11,458 cases, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

A total of 386 deaths have been reported due to the infection during the last 24 hours.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 3,08,993 including 1,45,779 active cases 1,54,330 cured/discharged/migrated and 8,884 deaths.

COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra continue to soar with the number reaching 101141. Tamil Nadu's coronavirus count stands at 40,698 while cases in Delhi reached 36,824.

Kochi, Apr 10: Kerala government is winning accolades for saving the life of eight foreigners including a very serious UK citizen who had been undergoing critical care for COVID-19 at a hospital here.

All the persons have been completely cured with the declaration of the test result of four persons. The persons, Roberto Tonozo (57) of Italy, Lanson (76) of UK, Elizabeth Lance (76), Brial Neil (57), Janet Layi (83), Steeven Hankok (61), Annie Wilson (61) and Jan Jackson (63) were completely cured and preparing to go for their countries, an official statement said on Thursday.

The last four persons who were cured expressed their desire to undergo treatment at a private hospital here.

Jammu, Jan 25: People in Jammu and Kashmir expressed happiness over the restoration of mobile data services and internet access through fixed-line across the Union Territory on Saturday.

Speaking to ANI Jitendra Sharma, a resident of Jammu said, "The government has taken a good decision. People had been facing hardship for a long period and I think it will improve further."

"It is a big relief to people. People can finish their pending work. I hope that 4G services will also be resumed soon," said a resident of Kashmir.

The internet speed is restricted to 2G only.

"Access shall be limited only to whitelisted sites and not to any social media applications allowing peer to peer communication and virtual private network applications. Directions shall be effective from January 25 and will remain in force till January 31," the statement by the government read.

Earlier on January 15, 2G services were reinstated in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, and Udhampur for white-listed sites.

The Central government had suspended the internet in the region following the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution on August 5 last year, which conferred special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and its bifurcation into two Union Territories -- Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir.
