Mangalore, June 20: Even though the work on laying boulders to check the gushing of water from a damaged vented dam in Maravoor on the outskirts of the city is under progress for third consecutive day, the floodwater has continued to rise in the area.

The floodwater has caused erosion of land and entered plantations and damaged the road. The flash flood has damaged the houses too in Padushedde area as water continued to flow at a high velocity close to the buildings.

Though a road has been laid, to visit the spot where the water started gushing out (as the existing road was washed away), owing to the slush, the vehicles are unable to reach the spot. “The lorries laden with boulders are finding it difficult to reach the spot,” said the residents.

Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda said that the work on dumping boulders to check water is under progress. “All measures will be taken to check the entry of water to the neighbouring houses and fields,” he said.

At the same time, the contractor of the dam has agreed to construct houses for those who lost houses due to floods. He has given Rs 50,000 to shift the families to safer place.

Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Executive Engineer S.L. Satyanaraya said the houses damaged in the flash floods would be reconstructed. He said that a layer of mud will be dumped on the lands that had been washed away.

However, he clarified that the zilla panchayat could not help crop losses suffered by those owning the lands in Padushedde.

Meanwhile, the three flood-affect families of the area, who were shifted to safer places, have held the authorities responsible for the tragedy.

According to them, the delay in providing a retaining wall as part of the construction of the vented dam was the main reason for flash flood which damaged the houses, lands and a road in area on the banks of the Gurupura River.

Kasaragod, May 25: An autorickshaw driver from Belur in Kasaragod was admitted for surgery to a hospital after being hit on the head by a falling jackfruit. He was tested positive for the coronavirus. It is not clear how he contracted the viral infection.

“While he was trying to pluck a jackfruit off a tree, one of them fell on him, injuring his spine. His hands and legs were weakened too. His condition required surgery. Our protocol dictates that we subject everyone who require immediate surgery to the covid test, just to be sure. That’s when he tested positive,” said Dr K Sudeep, superintendent of the Pariyaram Medical College in Kannur.

“He had symptoms of Covid-19. But he has no recent travel history or contact with any infected person. We’re not sure if he got it through one of his passengers in the rickshaw. He had visited the district hospital once so he could have got it from there. Anyway, we are examining it and preparing the route maps,” he added.

His family will be quarantined and health workers have begun to trace his immediate primary contacts.

Though there have been a number of cases in Kerala where a person’s source of infection could not be correctly ascertained, such people have gone on to recover without spreading the infection to others.

The Kerala government is conducting testing of high-risk persons on the frontlines, such as police officials, grocery vendors and health workers, as part of its sentinel surveillance programme, but maintains that there’s little evidence of a community spread in the state.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: On Wednesday morning starlet and Bigg Boss 3 contestant Jayashree Ramaiah sent social media into a tizzy with an update that read, “I quit. Goodbye to this f*****g world and depression.” Friends and acquaintances immediately began reaching out to the actor asking her to return their concerned calls and desist from taking any extreme steps.

“Jayashree has been battling depression for a while now. She had family issues and was also concerned about the lack of work,” shares actor Ashvithi Shetty. The Ramachari twins were in touch with Jayashree since they met at a celebrity cricket match four years ago. “She has shared several times about how low she’s been and I would try to cheer her up. But the problem was that she’d keep changing her phone number so often that it became difficult to keep track of how she was doing,” states Ashvithi.

Around four months ago, Jayashree moved into her own home and mentioned to her that she was happy with this new development in her life. “But she went retreated again and a few days ago, I messaged her on social media and she said she was doing fine. So I was shocked to see this update on Wednesday morning,” avers the actor. Repeated calls finally elicited a message from Jayashree that she was getting admitted to the hospital. “But I also got contradictory information that she had been discharged and had been taken to the hospital again but she was refusing to go inside. I am awaiting more clarity on the issue,” sums up Ashvithi.
