Bengaluru, May 24: After receiving a severe drubbing in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections, the JD(S)-Congress leaders are holding series of parleys to decide future course of action.

Senior Congress leaders, including former chief minister Siddaramaiah, KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao, and senior Ministers in the coalition government are meeting at the residence of Siddaramaiah and working out strategies to be taken in the event of the Opposition BJP is pressing hard to topple the one-year-old JD(S)-Congress coalition government.

The Congress leaders who were in shock after witnessing one of the worst backlash in the Lok Sabha elections, however, maintained that the verdict in the Lok Sabha should not be seen as against the mandate of the state government.

In his immediate reaction over receiving the drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections, the former chief minister Siddaramaiah, had maintained that the Lok Sabha results was a mandate for Narendra Modi and people have not voted against the JD(S)-Congress coalition government in Karnataka.

He had also rubbished the demand of the State BJP president B S Yeddyurappa for the resignation of the coalition government owning moral responsibility.

Meanwhile Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy had convened an informal meeting of the state Cabinet, today, reportedly to decide the future course of action, in the backdrop of the humiliating defeat of the Alliance partners, the Congress and the JD(S).

According to JD(S) sources, Chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, who was deeply saddened with the political setback in the Lok Sabha elections, in which his son Nikhil was also lost to an independent candidate in Mandya, is reportedly not keen to continue in the office.

He had also convened a meeting of the JD(S) legislators meeting after the Cabinet meeting and take their views on continuing alliance with the Congress, which had been flopped badly.

It may be recalled that both the Congress and the JD(S) which had a pre-poll alliance had fought the Lok Sabha elections jointly, sharing the seats among themselves.

While the Congress had chose to contest in 21 seats, it had allotted as many as 7 remaining seats in Karnataka to its new-found political ally JD(S).

When the results were announced both the Congress and the JD(S) had to content with bagging one seat among themselves, in the total number of 28 Lok Sabha seats.

The Congress and the JD(S) had formed the government in 2018 May, with alliance, as no parties got clear majority, and the Opposition BJP had emerged as the single largest party by bagging 106 seats in the 224-member Karnataka Assembly.

Both the Congress and the JD(S) parties, leaving aside their rivalries had come together for the first time in Karnataka and the JD(S) which had won only 37 Assembly seats had formed the Government with the Congress, which had secured 80 seats in the Assembly elections.

Belgaum, Apr 27: A CRPF COBRA commando was thrashed and dragged to police station barefoot by police allegedly for violating lockdown norms here in Belgavi district.

Sachin Savant, the CRPF commando of 207 COBRA was arrested by police personnel of Sadalga Police Station on April 23 on the alleged charges of violating lockdown norms and assaulting/deterring public servant from discharging his duty. The incident took place when the commando was cleaning his motorcycle in front of his house at Examba.

Images of the jawan being tied up in chains and the video of the incident have created furore on social media.

Calling it an "unfortunate incident", CRPF Additional Director General (Operations) Sanjay Arora wrote to Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood.

"In an unfortunate incident, Ct Sachin Savant of 207 COBRA was arrested by police personnel of Sadalga Police Station, Distt Belagavi, on Apr 23, on the alleged charges of violating lockdown norms and assaulting/deterring public servant from discharging his duty. The individual was on extended leave and cleaning his motorcycle in front of his house, at Examba, when the incident took place," Arora said in a letter to DGP.

In the video of the incident, the commando is seen standing near a bike, while multiple police personnel indulge in a verbal spat with him. A police personnel can be seen repeatedly pushing and shoving the jawan. The commando retaliates after he was attacked with a lathi by the police.

"Reportedly, a skirmish had taken place between the COBRA commando and the Beat police personnel over wearing of a mask, following which he was manhandled and ill-treated, before his family members, and paraded to the police station barefoot, where he was kept in chains and handcuff," CRPF ADG said.

He said the viral video shows that police personnel's conduct was not "citizen-centric".
Stressing that this "unpleasant situation" could have been avoided, if the Karnataka police had taken CRPF hierarchy into confidence before making the arrest, he said: "CRPF is a very reputed force, with high standards of discipline, and we have the institutionalized mechanism for taking care of such situations."
Arora asked that Karnataka DGP to get the matter inquired and provide justice.

Meanwhile, CRPF spokesperson M Dhinakaran said the bail plea of the commando will be taken up in the court on Tuesday.

"We have taken up the case with State Police Chief of Karnataka. On Tuesday, his bail plea case is coming before the court. The CRPF will be in court through a local officer. Thereafter, an investigation into the matter shall be followed up to take it to the logical conclusion," said Dhinakaran.

Giving clarification on the matter, Belgavi Superintendent of Police told media that the CRPF jawan was found roaming with friends, who ran away on seeing police. However, the jawan was caught without a mask.

"The jawan was standing without wearing a mask. When policemen on duty asked him why he is not wearing a mask, he started arguing asking them who are you to ask and I am from CRPF, thereby violating the orders promulgated by DC," he said.

The SP also claimed that the jawan lost his cool and kicked the stomach of one of the constables.

"The jawan held the collar of the police constable and started pushing him aggressively. Another head constable, who is old, came to the rescue of his fellow colleague. Later the jawan was taken to the police station and a case was registered under various sections of IPC and Section 3 of Epidemic Disease Act against him," he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 6: The city police commissioner Bhaskar Rao has ordered a special inquiry by the additional commissioner in connection with sexual harassment on a girl hailing from Kasaragod and the allegation that there were attempts to convert her to another religion.

Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Shobha Karandlaje on Sunday met Rao along with the girl and gave a complaint that two youths from Kasargod had raped her and forced her to convert to their religion.

A complaint has been filed in the Kasargod police station, but no action has been taken against them. Since both the accused work in Electronics City police station jurisdiction, she urged the police to arrest them.

Rao said he was yet to gather information about the case and he had directed the additional commissioner to conduct a preliminary investigation and submit a report.

After filing a complaint, Shobha told reporters that she has been sexually harassed ever since she was a minor.

The MP said that the girl, who was brought from Kasaragod to Electronics City, where the accused youths run a business, was allegedly raped. “I have asked the Police Commissioner to direct the Electronics City police to register an FIR and arrest the youths,” she said.

“I have spoken to the survivor and she said that the youths were also forcing her to convert to Islam and threatened her with dire consequences if she did not,” the MP alleged.

Shobha went on to claim that there was a gang that could be operating to forcibly convert Hindu women to Islam. She also met Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa along with the girl’s family members and gave a petition.
