Lucknow: 3 gunned down outside ATM, Rs 50 lakh looted

Lucknow, Feb 27: In a brazen attack, two masked assailants today shot dead three persons carrying bank money in a busy commercial area here and decamped with Rs 50 lakh after opening fire to scare away shocked onlookers, police said.shootout

The criminals came on a motorcycle around noon when cash was about to be loaded in an ATM of a private bank in Babuganj locality in Hasanganj area close to Lucknow University campus, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Yashasvi Yadav said.

The duo opened fire indisriminately from point blank range at three persons, including two private guards. Two persons died on the spot, while another died in hospital during treatment, he said.

The deceased were identified as Anil Singh (40), Arun Kumar (45) and Avinash Shukla (35).

Taking serious note of the incident, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav directed Director General of Police (DGP) A K Jain to personally monitor the progress in the investigation and ensure that the case be cracked within 15 days and the money is recovered. He also announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.

Dazed witnesses said they heard a burst of gun shots and before they could realise what had happened, the criminals fled on the motorcyle.

The incident sent shock waves across the state capital as it came at a time when 'Police Week', organised by UP Indian Police Service (IPS) Association, began today.

As panic gripped the area, police swung into action and cordoned off the entire place and constituted 16 teams to track down the culprits.

"We have taken the incident as a challenge and formed 16 teams to work on different angles to crack the case. Some valuable camera feed have been obtained. We are working on it," the SSP said.

IG Zaqi Ahmed, DIG R K Chaturvedi and the SSP besides other senior officers rushed to the spot.

Gory pictures of the three bullet riddled bodies went viral on news channels which also showed one of them lying inside the ATM in a pool of blood with wads of currency notes in the denomination of Rs 500 lying next to him.

Yavatmal, May 19: Four migrant workers were killed and 15 others were injured after a bus they were travelling in crashed into a truck in Yavatmal on Tuesday morning.

The bus was travelling from Solapur to Jharkhand. More details are currently awaited.

This comes amid nationwide COVID-19 lockdown has been extended to May 31, albeit with some relaxations.

Bhubaneswar, Jul 5: Odisha Police have arrested five persons including groom for gross negligence and violation of COVID-19 guidelines during his marriage procession in Berhampur.

"A case has been registered for violation of COVID-19 guidelines for organising a marriage procession with more than 50 guests in the premises of a hotel. They disregarded the compulsory use of mask and flouted social distancing norms," DIG Central Zone Satyabrata Bhoi said.

The incident happened on July 2.
"The case has been registered at Gopalpur PS under section 188/269/270 IPC, R/W Sec- 3 Epidemic Disease Act, and 34 IPC. Two vehicles used in the procession have also been seized. the arrested persons will be produced in the court," he added.

The District Collector has sealed the hotel for violating the COVID-19 norms.

Following the incident, the Chief Minister's office tweeted: "Odisha is in a crucial phase in the fight against COVID-19, hence, it is very essential that we all obey guidelines and regulations issued by State Government to contain the spread of COVID-19. Violation of the same would lead to strong action."

Guna (MP),  Jun 27: A 20-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly eloping with her minor partner and "marrying" her at Guna town in Madhya Pradesh, police said on Saturday.

The matter came to light, when a resident of Budhe Balaji area approached the Kotwali police station on Monday with a complaint that his 17-year-old daughter had gone missing, additional superintendent of police T S Baghel said.

On investigation, it was found that a relative from a village Shivpuri district, who was living with the family, was also missing, he said.

A team was sent to the village and the duo was caught on Friday, the official said, adding that the woman had married the minor, who claimed that she had eloped of her own volition.

The woman was arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, while the minor was sent back to her family after counselling.
