Bengaluru/Raichur, Jul 26: Water Resources Minister M B Patil on Tuesday said the Centre should take note of the demand of Veerashaiva-Lingayats and declare their dharma as a separate religion.MB Patil

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Patil said there has already been a delay in meeting the long-standing demand of the Veerashaiva-Lingayats for a separate religion.

He said leaders campaigning for the separate religion are even ready to launch a legal battle if the Centre does not pay heed to their demand. “We will convince the state Cabinet to send a proposal to the Centre,” he said.

On division in the community on having an independent religion, the minister said, “There are some seers in the community who do not follow the tenets of Basavanna. Let them continue to follow Hindutava, we do not mind.”

Patil claimed that BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa was opposing the separate religion demand as he is in the clutches of the RSS. “Yeddyurappa should have supported the call. He fears going against the RSS doctrine for his own political and electoral future.....But, he is making a mistake,” Patil, who is one of the prominent Lingayat leaders in the Congress, said.

Patil said both Lingayats and Veerashaivas are one and the same. Lingayat dharma was founded by Basavanna. There are a lot of differences between the Hindus and Lingayats. “But some people among Lingayats don’t subscribe to what Basavanna has taught. Those belonging to Panchapeeta don’t follow Basavanna’s teachings.

So, a team of ministers led by Basavaraj Rarareddy will tour the state and seek the support of such people for separate religion status to the Lingayat dharma,” he added.

Patil took exception to Pejawar Mutt seer Vishvesha Teertha Swami requesting the Lingayats to drop their demand for a separate religion. “There is no need for the Pejawar Mutt seer to interfere. He follows the RSS philosophy and ideology,” he said.

Speaking in Udupi on Tuesday, Vishvesha Teertha Swami had stated that the demand for a separate religion by the Lingayats is a matter of concern. “When Christians and Muslims are getting organised, there should not be a division among the Hindus,” he had said.

Patil said, “Let him not interfere.....We have our own seers to advise us.”

Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy on Monday said five Lingayat ministers will soon tour the state to campaign in favour of separate religion status for Veerashaiva-Lingayats.

KPCC working president (North Karnataka) S R Patil said Veerashaiva-Lingayat has all requisites to be declared an independent religion.

Speaking to reporters in Raichur, he said the Congress is not dividing religions. “The BJP has created walls among castes. But the Congress is trying to remove those walls,” he said.

Patil said Congress will not have a truck with other parties. Reports that the JD(S) and the Congress have a secret understanding is just a rumour, he stated.

Newsroom, Apr 30: Beleaguered billionaire B R Shetty, who went into hiding after after a multi-billion fraud at UAE-based NMC Health came to light, has now put the blame on his companies employees.

The former chairman of the Abu Dhabi headquartered hospital operator said, investigations he commissioned found following things:

1. The fraudulent creation and operating of bank accounts in my name including many fraudulent transfers that I neither authorised, consented to, or had any knowledge of.

2. The fraudulent creation of loans, personal guarantees, cheques and bank transfers in my name, and using my forged signature, that I neither authorised, consented to, or had any knowledge of.

3. The creation and set-up of companies in my name that I neither authorised, consented to, or had any knowledge of, and that were seemingly created with the express intention to commit or conceal fraud.

4. The fraudulent creation of powers of attorney, and the misuse of existing powers of attorney, again in my name, that I that I neither authorised, consented to, or had any knowledge of.

5. The creation and provision to me of false and misleading financial statements and information regarding the performance of some of my private companies and investments by members of my own management team.

6. The payments of expenses using my private companies and personal bank accounts, I believe to hide the true financials of the public companies."

This is the first time Dr. Shetty, who is reportedly hiding in India for the last couple of months, issued a statement based on investigations he commissioned privately. He had brought in a consultancy to conduct it after initial revelations came to light that NMC Health had not been fully transparent with its finances.

Dr. Shetty had stepped down as executive chairman after the then Board of Directors barred him from attending any meetings. “I intend to work tirelessly to clear my name and assist any authorities in getting to the truth and help them ensure that misappropriated or missing funds are returned by the perpetrators to their rightful owners,” said Dr. Shetty.

This month, ADCB, which has the highest exposure among UAE banks to NMC Health, brought charges against five former officials, including ex-board of directors, with Abu Dhabi prosecution. The former CEOs of NMC Health and Finablr are also currently not in the UAE.

Bengaluru, Feb 26: Congress leaders on Wednesday staged a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue at Vidhana Soudha here against BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yathnal's alleged remarks accusing freedom fighter HS Doreswamy of being a "Pakistani agent".

Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah, KPCC working president Eashwar Khandre also joined the protest.

Yathnal on Tuesday called Doreswamy a fake freedom fighter and a Pakistani agent, while addressing the media.

His comments triggered a controversy drawing sharp remarks from Congress and other parties.

Congress has demanded an apology from Yathnal and has also urged that his Assembly membership be cancelled.

"Session proceedings will not continue until Yathnal apologises," said senior Congress leader HK Patil while addressing the protest earlier today.

Siddaramaiah asserted that making "provocative" comments against such a freedom fighter is obnoxious.

Former KPCC president Dr G Parameshwar said: "Yathnal is a criminal who had mentioned in his election affidavit that he had 27 cases against him. He has made such loose comments against the freedom fighter. He should apologise for his remarks."
