Kochi, Jul 5: Supporters of Kerala-based People's Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasser Madani, an accused in the 2008 Bengaluru blasts case, staged a protest at the Cochin International Airport after his arrival was delayed.

Madani, lodged in a Bengaluru prison in connection with the blasts that left one person dead and injured 20 others, has been granted bail to visit his ailing mother in Kollam district and he was to take an IndiGo flight on Monday morning in Bengaluru.

Authorities here said according to their information, the airline refused permission to Madani to board its flight after it was found that necessary requirements for carrying a prisoner escorted by the police were not fulfilled.

According to the police, around 500 supporters gathered outside the terminal here to receive him. A section of them turned agitated after reports said that IndiGo refused to allow Madani to board the flight citing “some technical reasons”. Amid the melee, the protesters broke a glass pane of the IndiGo airline's counter located at domestic departure area of the Cochin airport, they said. A police team headed by Aluva Rural SP P N Unnirajan rushed to the spot to deal with the situation. The protest ended after they got an assurance that Madani will reach by air later.

The police said no arrests have been made, but added cases will be registered against those who were involved in the violence. The police said they used force to push out the slogan-shouting supporters.

About 8.15pm, Madani arrived at the Cochin International Airport in an IndiGo flight to a spirited welcome by PDP activists, adds DHNS from Thiruvananthapuram. He left for his home in Anvarssery in Kollam by road.

Dear Hari your statement should be changed. Please check the history. First of all the temples in india built after demolishing Buddist temples. So do you give back all the temples to buddists? Regarding Babri Masjid, since more than 400 years the musjid was there. So how come it is possible? there was temple?

Bengaluru, Jun 22: Senior Congress leader BK Hariprasad and BJP’s MTB Nagaraj, one of the defectors who helped the saffron party come to power in Karnataka, were unanimously elected to the Legislative Council along with five others on Monday.

All seven were declared as “duly elected” by Legislative Assembly Secretary MK Vishalakshi, the returning officer for the biennial election to the Legislative Council.

Hariprasad and Naseer Ahmed of the Congress, Nagaraj, R Shankar, Prathap Simha Nayak and Sunil Vallyapur of the BJP and Govinda Raju of the JD(S) are now MLCs.

While Ahmed was an incumbent who will get another term, the six others will replace Jayamma, MC Venugopal, NS Bore Raju, HM Revanna and TA Sharavana and DU Mallikarjuna whose term ends June 30.

While an election was scheduled June 29, it was not necessary as only seven candidates were in the fray for the seven seats on Monday, which was the last date for withdrawal of nominations. The nominations of A Yadavanahalli PC Krishnegowda and Mandikkal Nagaraja were rejected.

With their rejection as MLCs, Nagaraj and Shankar - who jumped ship to the BJP last year - will now look to become ministers in Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa’s Cabinet. Both Nagaraj and Shankar were ministers when they resigned and defected from the Congress-JD(S) coalition. While Nagaraj lost the December 2019 bypolls, Shankar did not contest.

Nagaraj, Shankar and Vallyapure were Yediyurappa’s picks for the Council, whereas Nayak is said to have been backed by BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel.

There were many aspirants in the Congress for the Council berths, but Hariprasad and Ahmed were picked, given their experience. Hariprasad is widely believed to counter Siddaramaiah, who leads the party in the Assembly.

Raju of the JD(S) runs a poultry business in Kolar and the choice of a fresh face is seen as the party leadership steering clear of any trouble as there were many asking for the ticket.

The flight will take off from Dubai at 4.10 pm UAE time and reach Mangaluru International Airport at 9.10 pm IST on May 12, announced Union Minister DV Sadananda Gowda in a tweet.

The flight was earlier scheduled for May 12 and then it was postponed to May 14. Now, it has been rescheduled to May 12.

Thanks to Karnataka NRI Forum of UAE which opened helpline to seek assistance to Kannadigas, nearly 2000 Kannadigas have registered for assistance in which 127 pregnant women, 27 senior citizens, 700 people who have lost jobs aftermath of coronavirus sought assistance from NRI forum.

In the first flight, priority will be given to people with medical emergency and pregnant women. Once the passengers reach Mangaluru, they will be quarantined in their home districts.
