Madappa, member of erstwhile Mysuru state assembly, dies at 96

U M Madappa, a freedom fighter and veteran politician, who was a member of the first Mysurur state assembly formed in 1952 (before unification of Karnataka), died on Thursday at a hospital in Bengaluru.

He was 96. The last rites were held on Friday in Udigala village in Chamarajanagar. He's survived by two sons and three daughters.

Madappa is remembered for his contribution to the unification of Karnataka, Chamarajanagar-Satyamangala railway line and the Chikkahole and Kabini irrigation projects.

In 1956, he had moved a proposal in the state legislature urging the Centre to implement the Chamarajanagar-Satyamangala railway project which is yet to be completed.

Born in 1922 at Udigala, a small village of Chamarajanagar, Madappa studied law in Belagavi and plunged into politics. He was elected to the state legislature from Chamarajanagar constituency to the first state assembly. He led the Karnataka unification movement in Chamarajanagar.
After unification, he was selected for the Karnataka state assembly in 1957, but tasted defeat in the 1962 election. In 1976, he quit the Congress, opposing the Emergency.

In 1979, he was appointed the Mysuru Rural district unit president of Janata Party by H D Deve Gowda. He retired from active politics in 1985.

When Jagjivan Ram was the Union agriculture minister, Madappa was nominated as a member of the Farming Cooperative Society advisory committee and Agriculture and Labour committee.

Kerala: 8 foreign nationals cured of COVID-19

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 10: Eight foreign nationals from Italy and United Kingdom, who were undergoing treatment in Kerala, have recovered fully from COVID-19, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Thursday.

The state reported 12 more positive cases of coronavirus on Thursday taking the total number of confirmed cases to 357, Vijayan said as he cautioned that the strict vigil against the pandemic will continue.

While the northern districts of Kannur and Kasaragod reported four cases each, two cases were reported from Malappuram district and one each from Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts, Vijayan told reporters after a COVID-19 review meeting here.

Of the eight foreign nationals, seven were undergoing treatment at the Ernakulam Medical College Hospital and one in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, Vijayan said, adding that some of the patients were in a serious condition.

The seven foreigners from UK, admitted in Ernakulam medical college, were part of the group which had on March 15 tried to leave the country without permission while being under observation at Munnar, a hill station in the state.

The Italian tourist in Thiruvananthapuram was staying at a resort at Varkala near here and was admitted to hospital on March 13, Vijayan said.

"The recovery of this UK tourist group, which comprised of 83 and 76-year-olds is a testimony to our robust healthcare system and good treatment extended to these patients," the chief minister said.

It has been 100 days since the first COVID-19 case was reported in the state and since then, a total of 357 cases have been confirmed and currently, 258 patients are under treatment in different hospitals.

Help poor, needy by not cutting their salaries: Karnataka CM

Bengaluru, Apr 4: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has appealed to employers not to cut salaries of their maids, servants and drivers who are unable to attend work due to the current lockdown situation in the country.

He said compassionate gesture of employers will support the poor and needy.

"I request all the employers not to cut salaries of their maids, servants, drivers etc., who are not able to work due to social distancing. Your compassionate gesture will support the poor and needy to overcome this hard time. FightBackKarnataka CoronavirusPandemic," the Chief Minister said in a tweet.

Mangaluru: Two from Karkala test positive for covid-19

Mangaluru, May 12: Two people hailing from Udupi district tested positive for covid-19 today. The sources of this infection is said to be Mangaluru's First Neuro Hospital.

Fresh bulletin from health and family welfare department revealed that a 52-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man from Karkala in Udupi were tested positive for the deadly coronavirus.

Among them, the woman had undergone treatment at the First Neuro Hospital. She is said to have contracted the infection from P-507 who was also was tested positive April 27. And the youth was in touch with the woman.

The duo have not visited their home in Karkala for past few days. They were in quarantine and tested positive while being admitted at the same hospital.

With this the total number of COVID-19 cases found in Dakshina Kannada district are 33 now. Three among them have died and 14 have been discharged. Now, the district has 16 active coronavirus cases.
