Madhumita murder accused's son gets SP ticket for UP polls

Lucknow, Oct 3: The Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party on Monday raked up another controversy after the party gave a ticket to 2002 Madhumita murder case accused Amarmani Tripathi's son in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Madhumita Earlier today, the ruling Samajwadi Party declared the candidates for nine Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh besides changing the candidates of 14 constituencies ahead of the 2017 state polls.

Tripathi's son Amanmani, has been named as Samajwadi Party candidate from Nautanwa in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh.

Amanmani had unsuccessfully contested 2012 assembly election from Nautanwa in Maharajganj on SP ticket.

Amanmani is currently facing CBI investigation on the charges of killing his wife, a 27-year-old law graduate in 2015, besides also facing charges of extortion and kidnapping.

It is to be noted that Amanmani's father Amarmani Tripathi, also a Samajwadi Party leader, is currently serving life term along with his wife Madhumani in the Madhumita murder case of poet Madhumita Shukla.

He was arrested in September 2003 in connection with the murder of Shukla with whom he allegedly had an affair. She was murdered in May 2003. Her post-mortem report stated she was pregnant and a DNA test matched it with Amarmani who was sentenced in 2007.

PM Modi, Jordan king discuss challenges posed by COVID-19

New Delhi, Apr 17: Prime minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held talks with Jordan King Abdullah II and discussed the challenges posed to the world by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The two leaders discussed the challenges posed to the world by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the steps being taken in their respective countries to limit its impact," an official statement said.

Prime Minister conveyed his greetings to Abdullah II and the people of Jordan for the upcoming Holy month of Ramadan which commences late next week.

The leaders agreed that their teams would remain in touch on issues related to COVID-19, as well as on other regional and global issues.

Nirbhaya case: Delhi court fixes March 20 as date of execution of 4 convicts

New Delhi, Mar 5: A Delhi court Thursday issued fresh death warrants for execution of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case for March 20 at 5.30 am.

Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana fixed March 20 as the new date of execution after it was told by the Delhi government that the convicts have exhausted all their legal remedies.

The lawyer for the four death row convicts also told the court that there was no legal impediment for the court to proceed in fixing the date of execution.

India, China Major General-level talks lasts for over six hours

New Delhi, Jun 18: Major General-level talks between India and China, held to resolve the issues related to the violent face-off in Ladakh's Galwan area on June 15-16, lasted for more than six hours on Thursday, sources said.

The talks between the Major Generals of the two countries had remained inconclusive on Wednesday.

Sources also said that all Indian Army personnel who were involved in Galwan valley violent face-off on June 15-16 are accounted for and no soldier is missing in action.

At least 20 Indian Army personnel, including a Colonel rank officer, had lost their lives in the violent face-off which happened in the Galwan valley as a result of an attempt by the Chinese troops to unilaterally change the status quo during the de-escalation in eastern Ladakh.

Indian intercepts have revealed that the Chinese side suffered 43 casualties including dead and seriously injured in the violent clash. The commanding officer of the Chinese unit is among those killed, sources confirmed to media persons.

India wants restoration of old status quo along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) prevailing before May 2020 when the first reports of Chinese incursions started appearing.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had on Wednesday conveyed a clear and tough message to his Chinese counterpart Foreign Minister Wang Yi that what happened in Galwan was a "pre-mediated and planned action that was directly responsible for the resulting violence and casualties."
