Magazine defends Priyanka Chopra cover

Mumbai, Oct 12: Actress Priyanka Chopra's latest cover for Conde Nast Traveller has invited criticism online and the magazine has come out in its defence, saying through the photo it wanted to address "culture of xenophobia".

pcThe 34-year-old "Quantico" actress is seen wearing a plain white t-shirt, which features refugee, immigrant, outsider, traveller arrangedone below another but the first three words are struck off with a red line, suggesting that Priyanka is a traveller.

The cover did not go down well with some, who took to social media to slam it as "insensitive".

The magazine in a lengthy statement said, "At Conde Nast Traveller, we believe that the opening up of borders and the breaking down of walls can help us discover the world, and open up our minds and hearts. So, when we had actress Priyanka Chopra wear a T-shirt, we had a point to make.

"And it's not about privilege. It's about how our labelling of people as immigrants, refugees and outsiders is creating a culture of xenophobia."

The magazine further said it wanted to bring attention to the plight of a million of refugees and immigrants, who cross borders for work.

"We are allowing thousands of innocent people who are forced to cross borders due to unimaginable terror and atrocities to be treated without humanity and empathy.

"It's about how we are allowing some powerful leaders to build barriers that make it more difficult for bright, motivated and hardworking people to see more of the world, learn from it and make it better for us all."

It is high time the world was freed of racism and prejudices, and people found oneness with each other, the magazine added.

"It's time we demand better, and stand against the building of walls, literal and otherwise. We must demand a world free of racism and bigotry and prejudice, so that we may enjoy all the abundance that travel offers, the beauty of a world that is open and rich and diverse in its people and cultures and geographies.

"And we must, in the midst of our many differences, find and celebrate our commonalities, our oneness."

Sharing the reason it featured Priyanka on its cover, the magazine said, "This is why Priyanka Chopra- a star at home and abroad, who has experienced firsthand the opportunities that travel offers—is the perfect ambassador."

Chennai, Mar 12: Superstar Rajinikanth on Thursday clarified that he never aspired to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and said his plans for politics include different heads for his prospective party and a possible government headed by it.

In his first official press conference since December 31, 2017, when he announced to take the political plunge, the veteran star also said he planned to appoint as CM, an educated youth who was compassionate and had self-respect.

With a two-leadership system for party and the government, the former would act as an "opposition" to highlight issues and would not even hesitate to "remove", apparently the head of the government, if it fails to perform, he said.

His prospective party would focus on including a substantial amount of youngsters in the age group of below 45 years while the rest would comprise retired judges and IAS and IPS officials among others.

"I myself would reach out to them and invite them," to join him, the 69-year-old actor said.

Contrary to expectations, he however, did not make a concrete statement on floating his party but called for an "uprising" by youth, after which he would make his formal political entry.

Los Angeles: Kevin Feige may have confirmed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will be getting its first transgender superhero but the Marvel Studios has said there is no definite timeline for that.

During a Q&A at the New York Film Academy, a fan had asked Feige about whether the studio plans to introduce LGBTQ characters into the MCU, "specifically the trans characters".

To this, the Marvel Studios president had replied, "Yes, absolutely, yes... And very soon. In a movie that we're shooting right now."

But sources in the company clarified to Variety that Feige only confirmed the first part of the comments that a trans character will appear in the MCU in future but he did not give a time period.

Though Feige did not reveal the name of the project that will introduce a LGBTQ character, fans speculate that he may have been referring to "The Eternals".

The film, which will feature an ensemble cast of Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington and others, is set to unveil a gay superhero in the MCU.

Marvel Studios has been making efforts to incorporate more diversity in its films after the success of "Black Panther", which featured a virtually all-black cast, and its first woman-fronted superhero movie "Captain Marvel".

"Avengers: Endgame", which became the highest grossing movie of all-time, had featured the MCU's first gay character, a cameo by director Joe Russo.

In 2020, the studio has two releases -- Scarlett Johansson-starrer "Black Widow" and "The Eternals" -- which have been helmed by women directors.
