Maha assembly suspends Muslim MLA for not saying Bharat Mata ki Jai'

March 16, 2016

Mumbai, Mar 16: AIMIM MLA Waris Pathan was today suspended from Maharashtra Assembly for refusing to say 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' with legislators cutting across party lines pressing for action against him through a unanimous resolution.

mimPathan, who represents Byculla seat in South Mumbai, will not be allowed to attend the proceedings of the House till the end of ongoing Budget session.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Girish Bapat said, "Pathan was suspended from Assembly for showing disrespect to national heroes and refusal to say Bharat Mata ki Jai."

It all began when All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA from Aurangabad, Imtiaz Jaleel, was speaking on the debate on the Governor's address in the Assembly.

Jaleel said the government should not spend taxpayers' money on building memorials of 'great personalities'.

A Shiv Sena MLA interjected, saying Jaleel's party leader Asaduddin Owaisi had recently stated he will not chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'.

To this, Pathan said, "We will say 'Jai Hind' but not 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. There cannot be compulsion on saying 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'. The Constitution does not say this."

Immediately after his remarks, MLAs from ruling BJP and Shiv Sena and other Opposition parties including Congress and NCP demanded suspension of AIMIM legislators from the House.

Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse said the AIMIM MLAs should apologise but his suggestion was shot down by angry members of the House, who, setting aside political differences, sought their suspension.

Bapat said he will table a resolution seeking the approval of the House for suspension of AIMIM MLAs, after which it was adjourned for 10 minutes. It was again adjourned thrice amid noisy scenes.

When the proceedings resumed, Minister of State for Home Ranjit Patil tabled the resolution, seeking suspension of Pathan, which was approved unanimously.

"Pathan has misused freedom of speech, violated Parliamentary traditions and insulted 'Bharat Mata (Mother India)," the minister said.

The resolution was tabled in keeping with the sentiments of the House, he added. "During his suspension period, Pathan won't be able to attend House proceedings and won't be allowed near Vidhan Bhawan premises," Patil said.

Speaker Haribhau Bagade informed the House that the resolution was adopted unanimously. AIMIM has expressed its opposition to chant 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' as proposed by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat who had said that the new generation needs to be taught to chant slogans hailing mother India.

Owaisi had said he did not want to chant that slogan. "What are you going to do, Bhagwat sahab. I won't utter that (slogan) even if you put a knife to my throat. Nowhere in the Constitution it says that one should say: 'Bharat Mata ki Jai," Owaisi had said addressing a public rally in Udgir tehsil of Latur district on March 13. His comments had evoked strong reactions from the Shiv Sena and BJP.

Nobody have the right to force anyone to do anything.

This is individual's right and choice to do so if he/she feels comfortable with it.
There may be no harm in telling Bharat Mataki Jai, but it should not be by force. It is his choice.
This is not constitutional or religious duty to say that.

However not telling is not at all a crime.
When individual enforces his own idea, then real obligatory duty also fails.
May God give wisdom to these people.

Bengaluru, Mar 8: The economic slowdown in the country had a cascading effect on Karnataka, as its growth rate for outgoing fiscal 2019-20 is projected to be 6.8 per cent against 7.8 per cent in the last fiscal (2018-19), a senior official said on Saturday.

"The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is estimated to be 1 per cent less at 6.8 per cent for this fiscal from 7.8 per cent in the last fiscal due to slowdown in manufacturing (industry) and services sectors," an official of the state finance department told media.

Though the agriculture sector has revived from 1.6 per dent in the drought-hit last fiscal (2018-19) to register 3.9 per cent this fiscal, growth rates of industries and services will be 4.8 per cent and 7.9 per cent for 2019-20 against 5.6 per cent and 9.8 per cent respectively in 2018-19.

"The GSDP is projected to grow at 6.3 per cent in the ensuing fiscal of 2020-21 due to continued slowdown in the national economy," the official hinted.

According to the state's economic survey for 2019-20, the farm sector grew more than double to 3.9 per cent from 1.6 per cent a year ago due to increase in the production of foodgrains, dairy products and fish catch.

Foodgrain production across the state rose to 136 lakh tonnes from 128 lakh tonnes a year ago, the survey revealed.

"In line with the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate decline, Karnataka's GSDP has declined from a high of 13.3 per cent in 2016-17 to a low of 6.8 per cent in 2019-20.

"The GSDP has declined from a double-digit growth of 10.8 per cent in 2017-18 to 7.8 per cent in 2018-19 and 6.8 per cent in 2019-20," the survey pointed out.

The survey has adopted the all-India growth rate for the services sector growth in the state, which reflects the impact of slowdown in the key sector.

At current prices, the southern state's GSDP is expected to be Rs 16,99,115 crore (budget estimates) with a 10 per cent growth rate in the next fiscal (2020-21).

"Real estate, professional services and ownership of dwellings contributed 35.31 per cent to the GSDP in 2019-20, followed by manufacturing with 15.32 per cent, trade and repair services 9.51 per cent and crops 7.44 per cent," said the survey findings.

Per capital income in the state at current prices is estimated to be Rs 2,31,246 in 2019-20, an increase of 8.8 per cent from Rs 2,12,477 in 2018-19.

"The per capita income in the state is 58.4 per cent more than that of all-India rate at Rs 1,35,050 in this fiscal," the survey added.

Bengaluru, Jul 9: The total number of Covid-19 infections in Karnataka on Thursday breached the 30,000 mark as the state reported its biggest single-day spike of over 2,200 new cases and 17 related fatalities, taking the death toll to 486, the Health department said.

The day also saw a record 957 patients getting discharged after recovery, out of which 606 were from Bengaluru Urban.

Out of the 2,228 fresh cases reported on Thursday, a whopping 1,373 were from Bengaluru Urban alone.

The previous biggest single-day spike was recorded on July 8 with 2,062 cases.

As of July 9 evening, cumulatively 31,105 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 486 deaths and 12,833 discharges, the Health department said in its bulletin.

It said, out of 17,782 active cases, 17,325 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 457 are in ICU.

"Death rate in Karnataka is 1.49 percent, while in Bengaluru is 1.28 percent, and our target is to bring it below 1 percent," Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar told reporters.

"The reason for spike in cases in Bengaluru and other places in recent days is because during the last four months of lockdown we had controlled it very well, but as we relaxed lockdown for economic activities we did not follow certain precautionary measures like distance among other things," he said.

The Minister also conceded that there were lapses on part of the government also in terms of tracing and tracking.

"It has to be improved especially in Bengaluru and we are taking steps in this regard."

Among the 17 dead seven were from Dharwad, two each from Hassan, Kalaburagi, Mysuru, and one each from Raichur, Uttara Kannada, Tumakuru and Davangere.

The deceased include 13 men and 4 women.

The dead are all either with a history of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) or Influenza-like illness (ILI).

Out of 2,228 fresh cases today, contacts of the majority of the cases are still under tracing.

Among the districts where the new cases were reported, Bengaluru Urban accounted for 1,373, followed by Dakshina Kannada (167), Kalaburagi (85) and Dharwad (75).

Bengaluru urban district tops the list of positive cases, with a total of 13,882 infections, followed by Kalaburagi (1,901) and Dakshina Kannada 1,701.

Among discharges Bengaluru urban tops the list with total 2,834, followed by Kalabuagi (1,392) and Udupi (1,206).

A total of 7,79,209 samples were tested so far, out of which 20,028 were tested on Thursday alone.

So far 7,28,887 samples have been reported as negative, and of them 17,568 were reported negative today.
