Mahasabha firm on Veerashaiva-Lingayat dharma

Bengaluru, Aug 3: The stand-off continued between the Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha and Lingayat community members who claim Lingayat dharma is different from Veerashaiva.

The Mahasabha on Wednesday stuck to its stand that Veerashaivas and Lingayats are one and the same and that separate religion status should be given for Veerashaiva-Lingayat dharma. Executive committee of the Mahasabha passed a resolution to this effect.

Senior Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa is the Mahasabha president, while Municipal Administration Minister Eshwar Khandre is its secretary general.

On the contrary, Water Resources Minister M B Patil, who is among the prominent leaders who are claiming Lingayat dharma is different from Veerashaiva, said that he is ready to face any consequence or make any sacrifice till his aim of getting separate religion tag for Lingayat dharma is achieved.

“Basavanna (12th century social reformer) founded the Lingayat religion 800 years back. What it requires is only a constitutional recognition,” Patil said and suggested that the Mahasabha must come to a conclusion only after a comprehensive discussion involving scholars and seers of various community mutts.

“Let there not be a street fight... Let us all sit together and discuss the issue,” Patil added.

Briefing reporters on decisions taken by the Mahasabha, Shamanur said the Mahasabha was formed 110 years ago. Confusion regarding Veerashaivas and Lingayats is only a fortnight-old. The Mahasabha will hold a meeting with all those who are talking of separation and will take everybody along, he added.

Veerashaivas and Lingayats are like two sides of the same coin. It was the Mahasabha that first demanded separate religion status for the dharma. The Mahasabha will work towards a consensus on the issue and will soon recommend to the Centre granting separate religion status to the Veerashaiva-Lingayat dharma, Khandre said.

Why do they want separate religion status? Therein lies the problem! Do they want it for the sake of Dharma, or is there any Adharmic plan behind the demand? Most probably the latter. Most of such divisions are caused over money, property and similar matters of greed, in the name of religion. If no money were involved, the parties concerned would not waste time bickering with each other! That is the simple and honest truth. The followers of either religion should reject the calls for violence by crooked leaders.

Veerashaivas and Lingayats don't want to be known as Hindus ? Many Dravidians say that they are not Hindus.

I think Shiva and Linga are Hindu icons/motifs/God. If Shiva followers feel they are not hindus, it is strange. Also, Basavanna is a avatar of Nandi, Shiva's prime devotee. And to say that Basava is NOT a HINDU is strange. I can understand that they want a identity, but to claim that they are not hindus is....wrong.

New Delhi, Feb 29: The arsonists, who were allegedly hired by the pro-CAA politicians in Delhi to unleash violence against Muslims, did not even spare the residence of Border Security Force personnel Mohammed Anees.

While the jawan, who has spent three years guarding the borders along Jammu and Kashmir, had hoped that his job profile mentioned on the nameplate hung outside their two-storey house would discourage the vandals, he was proved wrong.

The nameplate on house number 76 in Khas Khajuri Gali clearly mentioned it was the property of a security force personnel who protects India’s borders from foreign invasions. Yet, it was burned down on the afternoon of February 25.

First, the ruthless goons set the vehicles parked outside the jawan’s house on fire, then they torched his home. Stones were also pelted at his house amid slogans of “idhar aa Pakistani, tujhe naagarikta dete hai” (Come here Pakistani, get your citizenship).

Apart from Anees, his father Mohammed Moonis, 55, uncle Mohd Ahmed, 59, and 18-year-old cousin Niha Parveen were in the house. Sensing what was about to go down next, they all escaped from the house, and were helped by paramilitary troops.

Charred remains of the house now stand where the house was till three days ago. In the two lanes of Khajuri Khas near Anees’s house, 35 houses were set on fire.

The loss suffered by the BSF soldier’s family was perhaps greater as they had kept all their life’s savings inside: two weddings in the family were to take place in the next three months.

Niha Parveen was to get married in April and Anees himself was to get married the following month. “All the things we collected all our life, jewellery – two gold necklaces, silver jewellery, it is all gone,” the family said.

“We used to buy jewellery on instalments… used to give money every month and collected this jewellery,” they said. Rs 3 lakh in cash for the wedding arrangements also got burnt along with other valuables and all their belongings.

Khajuri Khas is a Hindu-majority area, but Anees’s family says no neighbour of theirs was involved in the attack. “People came from outside.” Instead, their Hindu neighbours were asking the rioters to leave. They requested them to leave and helped douse the vehicles on fire.

The blast reported at around 8:30 pm during a cultural programme gripped the central parts of Bengaluru in a panic especially after the incident of police recovering a live bomb in Mangaluru airport.

According to sources in Shanthinagar, MLA Harris was attending the birthday celebrations of MGR organized by the locals close to his residence in Shanthinagar. Following the blast, Harris and a few others who standing close to the MLA sustained burn injuries and rushed to the nearby Philomena Hospital immediately and police officials from both the Ashok Nagar and Vivek Nagar visited the spot. The police officials are yet to confirm whether it was a bomb blast or due to the bursting of loud and powerful crackers.

Chethan Singh Rathore, DCP (Central) visited the hospital and the blast site. A team of forensic science lab experts have also been summoned to the spot to collect samples for ascertaining the nature of the blast. MLA Harris’s son Mohammed Nalapad who rushed to the hospital along with supporters told media persons that they are completely shocked by the incident.

“He was sitting on a chair and suddenly something that was hurled at him exploded beneath the chair. He sustained injuries to his leg and brought to the hospital. He is being treated by a team of doctors and other injured supporters are also being attended to by the doctors,” Nalapad said.

Expressing shock over the incident, he said, “My father has been an MLA for 12-years and nothing of this sort had happened before in the constituency. We have no rivals and my father never had any gunmen. We are all shocked and have complained to the jurisdictional police.”

Meantime, Dr Shankar Prasad, Medical Director, St Philomena’s Hospital explained that Harris and others are currently being treated for minor injuries. “None of them have any open cut injuries and they are being examined further,” Dr Prasad told DH.

According to Dr Prasad, Harris had a minor blood clot in his left leg which was possibly due to a hard object hitting him during the blast. “We have taken X-Ray and examining further. At the look of it, it seems like a very minor injury,” he added.
