Belagavi, Dec 2: The state government should be serious on making mandatory Kannada medium study from class 1 to 8 for all students in order to strengthen the language, said poet Prof K S Nissar Ahmed.

He was speaking at a programme to felicitate Rajyotsava awardees of Belagavi district — Siddharam Swami of Naganuru Rudrakshimath, Hindustani vocalist Pandit Rajprabhu Dhotre and senior engineer B A Reddy — organized by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) here recently.

Ahmed said there is nothing wrong in learning English, but the focus should be on the mother tongue. "We should be proud of our language since its 2,500 years old and one among 20 prominent languages of the 6,000 languages of the world. There is a need to introduce Kannada effectively in the judiciary and bureaucracy," Ahmed said.

Siddharam Swami called for the need to strengthen Kannada in the border areas. Vice-chancellor Prof Karisiddappa, registrar H N Jagannath Reddy, registrar (evaluation) Satish Annigeri and finance officer M A Sapna were present on the occasion.

Mangaluru, Feb 8: A speeding car fell off the newly-inaugurated Pumpwell flyover in the city after jumping the median and ramming into an oncoming car today.

At least four persons have suffered injuries in the mishap involving a Maruti Alto and a Renault Duster. The condition of two is said to be extremely critical. The other two have suffered minor injuries.

The accident took place when the driver of the speeding Alto which was heading towards Kasaragod from Udupi lost control over his vehicle.

Towards the end of the flyover, car rammed into the divider and then hit the ill-fated Renault Duster which was coming from the opposite direction. The Alto then fell off the bridge.

The accident caused traffic jam on the highway for some time. The flyover was inaugurated a week ago, after a decade long wait.

Dubai, May 5: Saudi Arabian prosecutors have ordered the arrest of a Saudi citizen for insulting an Asian expatriate and abusing him for not embracing Islam.

A video went viral online showing the expat, apparently with little knowledge of the Arabic language, being insulated by an Arabic-speaking man who does not appear in the clip, for having not embraced Islam and for not fasting.

A monitoring centre affiliated with the public prosecution examined the video the content of which “shows the citizen’s use of abusive words against the Asian resident on the pretext of inviting him to Islam,” the prosecution source said.

“The public prosecution closely follows up whatever infringes rights of citizens and residents including harm to their dignity and legal rights regardless of pretexts of such infringement,” the source added.
