Mangaluru, Mar 6: Launching a tirade against the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, former Chief Minister and JD(S) State President H.D. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said that both the national parties have been indulging in divisive politics, sidelining development of the State.

Interacting with a select group of achievers in different fields here, Mr. Kumaraswamy, said the government its officials should act as per the requirement of a majority of the populace irrespective of caste and religion, and should not function in a fashion to merely appease a small section of people.

Claiming that during his 20-month tenure as chief minister, there was not a single incident of communal strife in the State, he said that said the government should act sternly whenever there are attacks on religion and faith. “We should not tolerate communal forces,” he said.

"I was chief minister for 20 months and there was not a single communal flare-up during my tenure. If I am elected as CM again, peace and tolerance in the coastal districts will be my top priority. Even if it is an MP or MLA instigating violence, I will take action against him and put an end to the fear in the minds of the people. You have given all a chance, now please give me an opportunity to serve you," he appealed.

He called upon the citizens to be more proactive and not assume that their responsibility is over after exercising their franchise once in five years. “A conducive environment should be created where the government can truly act according to the wishes of the people," he said.

"People in the coast want to restore peace but violence is being instigated by a few individuals. It is the duty of the government to check activities of anti-social elements. When there was a law and order problem in a particular district, then the Chief Minister should have invited members of leaders of the community and discussed a solution to check the unrest. If he had discussed the matter with people then I am sure a solution would have emerged," he said.

"Failing to initiate action against Gaurakshaks and miscreants who instigate communal issues in the district shows the weakness of the state government. It was the duty of the government to initiate action against those who speak ill of other religions," he felt.

"In the name of protection of cattle, Gaurakshaks have raised their ugly head. They should be asked to rear cattle. Will they accept to rear a cow? he asked. There are different food habits in the country. Do not try to disturb the peace on issues of food habits," he requested.

Kumaraswamy said that changing the Constitution is impossible as Dr B R Ambedkar has made it robust. "No government can change the Constitution of the country," he said while replying to a query.

Mangaluru, July 31: Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has unveiled a campaign both on digital media and outdoor billboards on bringing awareness on the right usage of masks, social distancing and hand washing in the fight against COVID19. The campaign has received very good response and attention on social media and with the citizens of Mangaluru.

While the numbers of Covid-19 infected people were increasing and a vaccine would take some more time it was observed that norms of social distancing and other precautionary practices were thrown to the wind. Many people in Dakshina Kannada were found using masks inappropriately. Wearing a mask in a scientific way by covering both the nose and mouth is imperative to control droplets that spread the virus. We need to rise above our inconvenience to fight the virus.

Considering this the KCCI found an immediate need to bring awareness and constant reminder to people on the right usage of masks, social distancing, washing hands and other dos and don’ts to stay ahead of the virus and beat the pandemic.

A digital campaign and an outdoor advertisement campaign were planned by the chamber to remind and encourage people to follow best practices when interacting with others.

The theme of the Campaign was decided to be “Let’s Fight Back Together” Origin Designext a Creative Agency in Mangalore was roped in to do the creative for the campaign and a team from KCCI worked with the Agency to shape up the campaign with their inputs. In the meantime Indian Red Cross Society Dakshina Kannada and Rotary Mangaluru expressed their interest to support the Campaign.

Mangaluru based outdoor agencies like Jyothi Advertisers, Kalkura Advertisers and Gee Dee Advertisers agreed to provide outdoor space gratis to this community service campaign. Presented both in English and Kannada, the campaign has been creating waves on social media and on the street, a sign that it is being very well received by the populace of Mangalore city.

The creative of Half Covered or Half exposed where a model is shown with a mask that exposes the nose and KA-19 v/s COVID-19 (KA-19 being the Vehicle Registration Code for the District) have been particularly making a buzz in the community. All together 14 hoardings are currently on display with various Covid-19 awareness messages. Many business houses have shown interest to participate in this public awareness campaign.

The Chamber hopes this campaign would go a long way in the fight of the city against COVID-19 and play its role in putting the pandemic behind us. “Businesses and our economy has suffered enough, we need to work together to fight this virus, we need to rise above minor inconvenience and win this war,” says Isaac Vas the President to KCCI.

Remember social media memes of Chinese companies exporting #BoycottChina hats and t-shirts to India? This time India’s sensational and saffronite TV anchor Arnab Goswami vindicated those memes by hosting an anti-China debate show which was sponsored by Chinese companies!

While the last night's debate was all about boycotting Chinese products in the wake of massacre of over 20 Indian soldiers by their Chinese counterparts in eastern Ladakh, the show was brazenly promoting Chinese products through advertisement placements.

During the debate, amongst the flashy headlines, there were two brand sponsorships that appeared: VIVO and Xiaomi. Both companies are giant Chinese multinational corporations.

Twitter user Nirmala Tai, who was among those who spotted this irony, highlighted two instances during the debate where the logo of one of the brands popped up, and one where Xiaomi was found promoting the Mi 10.

Many Twitterati used Goswami’s some of the favourite words such as ‘hypocrite’ and ‘anti-national’ to target him. They hit out at his channel for accepting sponsorship deals from Chinese brands at a time when anti-China sentiment is strong in the country.
