Malegaon blast accused Pragya Thakur is a terrorist: Siddaramaiah

Hubli, May 18: Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday termed Malegaon blast accused Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur a "terrorist" for calling Mahatma Gandhi's killer Nathuram Godse a "true patriot".

"Mahatma Gandhi was given the title of Mahatma by the people of India but Godse was never given any such title. If people who murder such Mahatmas are called patriots, then all terrorists can be called the same. Pragya Thakur is 100 per cent RSS, a kind of terrorist only. What else can be expected from such a woman?" Siddharamaiah told reporters here.

Thakur, the BJP candidate from Bhopal Lok Sabha seat had earlier defended Godse on May 16 by calling him a patriot.

"Nathuram Godse was a 'deshbhakt', is a 'deshbhakt' and will remain a 'deshbhakt'," she had said on Thursday.

The senior Congress leader also attacked BJP over the statements given by MPs Anant Kumar Hegde and Navin Kateel in support of Thakur's comments and asserted that they knew nothing about India's past.

"There are many such people in the BJP. There's Anant Kumar Hegde who wants to change the constitution and then there's the MP from Mangalore, Kateel, who do not know the history of India, how the country got independence and what is India's glory, how can we call them patriots," he said.

BJP president Amit Shah, on the other hand, said on Friday that the party will take appropriate action against its Bhopal Lok Sabha candidate Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and two other leaders over the comments hailing Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse.

Offer prayers at home if some mosques can't follow covid guidelines: Mangaluru Qadhi

Mangaluru, Jun 2: Even as the mosques in Karnataka recieved green signal from state government to reopen for congregational prayers from June 8, a senior Islamic scholar in coastal Karnataka has encouraged Muslims to prefer to offer prayers at homes during covid times.

Twaqa Ahmed Al-Azhari, the Qadhi of Mangaluru, has welcomed the state government's decision to allow Muslims to offer congregational prayers including Jum'a prayers with certain precautions and conditions.

"Government has upheld our religions sentiments. All the mosques where congregational prayers will be held from June 8 should strictly follow all the guidelines issued by the government," he said.

He also suggested that if any mosque is not in a position to follow all the guidelines issued by the government then it should refrain from holding congregational prayers. "Muslims can continue offer Fard and Jumá prayers at homes as the cornavirus pandemic is still spreading in the region and across the world," he said.

Man arrested under Wildlife Protection Act for biting snake to death in Karnataka

Kolar, May 7: A 38-year-old man has been arrested for biting a snake and peeling off its skin at Mustur village in Kolar district of Karnataka.

Mulbagal range forest officer KN Ravikeerthi said forest officials nabbed Kumar, a construction worker, at Mustur on Wednesday and booked him under the Wildlife Protection Act. He was under the influence of alcohol.

Ravikeerthi said Kumar's offence is non-bailable and attracts a jail term of up to three years. The remains of the snake were collected and sent to a lab to ascertain its species. Forest officials said the snake Kumar bit was not a viper as was reported earlier but a rat snake.

On Tuesday, Kumar was riding back home after buying liquor when the snake ca me under his bike's wheels. He tossed the injured snake around his neck, bit it and peeled off its skin. Kumar said the snake had troubled him in the past.

Mangaluru violence: ADGP holds meeting with senior cops

Mangaluru, Jan 5: Against the backdrop of Mangalore violence of December 19, Additional Director General of Police of Karnataka Amar Kumar Pandey visited the city and held a meeting with senior police officers.

According to senior police officials here on Sunday, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Muslim Central Committee had planned to hold a protest against CAA at Nehru Maidan while the SKSSF had called for anti-CAA protest at State Bank area.

Though both the protests had been called off, there was an apprehension of a repeat incident of December 19 violence and hence the ADGP visited the city at the behest of state government and monitored the situation here for the entire day on Saturday.

The ADGP was unhappy that despite initial inputs and the imposition of Section 144 in the city, the situation on that day escalated to a level where police had to resort to firing only in this city.
