Kolkata, Dec 26: A day after the BJP-led Karnataka government ordered the withdrawal of Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia compensation announced for the families of two men killed in anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stir in Mangaluru, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced Rs 5 lakh each for the kin of deceased -- Jaleel (43) and Nousheen (49). The Trinamool Congress chief made the announcement while addressing an anti-CAA-NRC rally in Kolkata on Thursday.

"We will pay cheque of Rs 5 lakhs each to the families of those who lost their lives in Mangaluru during protests," Mamata said, as she received applause from the gathering for the decision taken by her on "humanitarian grounds". The Bengal CM also reiterated that her agitation against the Centre's citizenship project would continue till the CAA and the NRC would not be withdrawn. In her state, she said, the Trinamool government "will never allow" the BJP to impose its majoritarian agenda.

Mamata condemned the BJP governments in several states of stifling democracy and denying the people their fundamental right to assembly and protest. In Bengal, the students' agitation against the CAA-NRC project would be supported by the government, she said, while also underlining that the demonstrations must be peaceful.

"I will tell all the students to continue their protest for their democratic rights, in a democratic way," the Trinamool chief said, adding that the ground-level protests would compel the Centre to revoke the "discriminatory" citizenship project.

The anti-CAA protests, which first erupted in Assam and other northeastern states, have now spread to all parts of the nation. The maximum demonstrations are being reported in areas with significant Muslim population. A section of the community views the CAA, through the prism of nationwide NRC, as a ploy to grant citizenship to all non-Muslims while rendering the community vulnerable to lose their citizenship.

Mangaluru, July 28: A screenshot of a death threat message against IAS officer Sindhu B Rupesh, the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, is now going viral on social media.

The threat comes in the wake of the Deputy Commissioner’s warning against attack on cattle traders by anti-social elements ahead of Eid al-Adha.

It is learnt that a discussion was held about DC’s warning in a pro-Hindutva WhatsApp group. The death threat was issued in the same group in Tulu language.

A police officer said that if the deputy commissioner doesn’t lodge a complaint, the police will file a suo motu case in this regard.

Feb 3: The Karnataka government is probably the only state to have so many nodal agencies to deal with investment proposals. There is the KIADB, Karnataka Udyoga Mitra, State High Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC), State Level Single Window Clearance Committee (SLSWCC) and District Level Single Window Clearance Committee.

While the government claims these have been created to speed up the process of setting up industries, they’re only delaying it. “A four-to-five year delay in acquiring land has become the norm,’’ say industry sources.

“These entities are only adding layers of obstacles to investors and is not really helping industries,” said a senior IAS officer.

While DLSWCCs are headed by deputy commissioners are empowered to clear investment proposals up to Rs 15 crore, SLSWCC, headed by the industries minister, clears proposals more than Rs 15 crore and up to Rs 500 crore. Proposals worth more than Rs 500 crore have to be cleared by SHLCC chaired by the CM. These entities have to meet regularly and clear proposals. But often, these meetings don’t happen as scheduled. “The delay starts from here,” said Vasant Ladava, industrialist and member of Karnataka Industries and Commerce, Bengaluru.

The single-window agencies involving representatives of departments like industries, revenue, pollution control board and forest are supposed to collectively give necessary clearances required for industries. “But, of late, they have become only project approvers without other responsibilities, leaving investors in the lurch,” said Ladava.
