Man, 63, held for raping minor for over three months

Vellore, Feb 11: A 63-year-old man has been arrested for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl for nearly three months near Walajapet in Vellore district.

childabuseThe incident came to light when the victim's brother had taken her to Government Hospital in Walajapet after she fell sick on Thursday.

After the demise of their parents, the girl and her elder brother were living at their house. The victim's brother was working in a private shoe factory. He goes to work at 8am and return at 10pm. The girl, who is a Class 8 student in a government school, used to live alone at home at most parts of the day.

On examining the girl on Thursday, the doctors at the hospital found that she had been sexually assaulted over a period of time. The girl told the doctors that a neighbour, who was later identified as Kadhar Basha, 63, had been forcibly having physical relationship with the girl for the last three months. Following this, the doctors alerted police.

Police said, "Taking advantage of the girl's situation, Basha who worked in an incense stick making unit, frequently visited the victim's house. On several occasions, he sexually assaulted and raped the girl. He also threatened her not to disclose anything to anyone."

Police picked up Basha for interrogation on Thursday night. During inquiry, he confessed to the crime.

Based on his statement and the victim's complaint, the Ranipet AWPS police registered a case against Basha. The police invoked Section 454 (lurking house-trespass to commit offence publishable with imprisonment), 376 (punishment for rape), 506 (I) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code read with sections 4, 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) and 8 (punishment for sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO) Act 2012 against the accused. He has been remanded him under judicial custody.

The victim has been admitted to Government Vellore Medical College Hospital and undergoing treatment, police said.

Mandya, Jun 14: In a tragic incident, a woman and her two children were drowned in a pond at Beeranahalli village in Nagamangala taluk of this district on Sunday.

Police said that the deceased have been identified as Geeta (40), and her two children Savita(19) and Soumya(14).

Savaitha is a degree student while Soumya was studying in 9th standard. The trio drowned in a pond where they had gone to wash their cows. The locals rushed to the spot and tried to rescue them but could not save.

Lucknow, May 1: Six members of a family were allegedly hacked to death by another family member over a property dispute in Gudauli village in the Banthra area on the outskirts of the city on Thursday, police said.

The accused, Ajay Singh (26), went to the local police station after committing the crime and surrendered, they added.

Singh allegedly had a heated argument with the family members over a property and attacked them with a sharp-edged weapon, the police said.

The accused allegedly killed his mother, father, elder brother, his wife and two children -- a son and a daughter -- they added.

The victims were identified as Amar (60), Ramsakhi (55), Arun (40), Ramdulari (35), Saurabh (7) and Sarika (2).

When asked, Commissioner of Police Sujeet Pandey said six members of a family were killed and the accused surrendered before the police.

New Delhi, Jan 11: Assets worth Rs 78 crore have been attached by the ED in connection with a money laundering probe against former ICICI Bank Chairman Chanda Kochhar and others, officials said on Friday.

A provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has been issued for attachment of the properties that includes Kochhar's Mumbai-based house and some other assets belonging to a company linked to her, they said.

The book value of the attached assets is Rs 78 crore, they said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is probing Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and others in a case of alleged irregularities and money laundering in giving loans by the bank to the Videocon group.
