Man crushed to death by machine at tyre factory

Mysuru, Nov 17: A contract employee of JK Tyres on KRS Road here was crushed to death by a rubber milling machine on the factory premises early Thursday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Ravi (32) of Sunnadakeri in the city. The incident occurred when he was feeding rubber to the machine at 6.50 am.

According to police, Ravi was working as a daily wager for the past four years and was not trained in operating the machine.

According to sources, the operator had left the place when the night shift ended at 7 am. Ravi, a helper, was feeding rubber to the machine. An employee said, the machines are not switched off and the workers need to continue their work till the employee of the next shift takes charge, but this was not the case on Thursday.

Police said, though necessary safety measures were in place in the factory, Ravi got crushed in the machine as he lacked expertise in operating the machine. Prima facie, it looks like the incident occurred due to negligence. Police said similar accidents had been reported in the past also.

As many as 2,000 employees work in the factory in different shifts at different branches all over the country.

The employees, family members and relatives of Ravi staged a protest in front of the factory, demanding compensation. The company has promised suitable compensation and a job to one of the members of Ravi's family, it is said.

Bengaluru, Jan 5: BJP leader and Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa once again blamed the Congress of creating 'confusion' among the Muslim community over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act-2019 while launching a door to door campaign to dispel such rumors.

Yediyurappa was on a door-to-door campaign to make people aware of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and to allay their fears.

"Unnecessarily, the members of Congress are creating confusion among the Muslim community. I assure you that not a single Muslim will be affected because of CAA," said B. S. Yediyurappa.

"Almost all previous Prime Ministers have supported it, now Congress is creating a problem so as to create confusion among Muslims. That's why we are out on the door-to-door campaign," he said.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, seeks to grant Indian citizenship to Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

Bengaluru, Mar 29: Seven new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Karnataka since Saturday 5 pm to 2 pm on Sunday.

The total number of positive cases in the state stands at 83, out of which five have been cured/discharged and three have lost their lives, according to the Karnataka Health Department.

A total of 979 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India, informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.

Mangaluru, July 17: For the first time, Dakshina Kannada saw over 3,00 new coronavirus cases in a single day. The coastal district today recorded 311 positive cases. 

The number of active cases in the district is 1,725 while its overall tally stands at 3,074.

Out of the 26,242 samples tested so far, 23,168 were tested negative. 

As many as 1,278 people were discharged after fully recovering so far including 115 people who were discharged today.

The district also recorded deaths of 8 covid-19 patients in past 24 hours including a woman. The deceased are aged between 53 years and 78 years. 

With this the total number of deaths in the district mounted to 71 including 12 patients from other districts who were admitted in hospitals here. 

Meanwhile, Karnataka reported 3,693 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, which raised the virus case count to 55,115. The number of recoveries reached 20,757, including 1,028 on Friday.

At 115 fatalities, the state witnessed its biggest single-day jump. Bengaluru accounted for 75 of these 115 deaths. The number of active cases in the state are 33,205, including 508 patients who are in ICU. The state's death toll reached 1,147 while that of Bengaluru stands at 582.
