Madikeri, Aug 7: The death of a man on Monday evening soon after he consumed ‘thirtha’ (holy water) — which an unidentified person had couriered him — at his house in Tannirhalla in Somwarpet taluk has led to speculations.

K Suresh, a cook working at a hotel near the private bus stand in Somwarpet, is said to have received the courier, sent to him and addressed to his workplace, on Sunday morning. The courier contained a bottle of ‘thirtha’ and a letter that stated that the holy water was from a temple at Kasaragod . The unsigned letter also instructed Suresh to consume the ‘thirtha’ after offering puja to the same.

Heeding the instruction, Suresh consumed the holy water at his house on Monday evening. Soon after, Suresh started bleeding from his mouth, said his wife Radha. He died while being rushed to Somwarpet Government Hospital. The body was sent for postmortem to Madikeri District Hospital late on Monday evening.

Relatives and the family members of Suresh suspect that the “holy water” was laced with poison, and consumption of the same resulted in Suresh’s death. The family has also named a suspect in the case. However, Somwarpet police are investigating the matter to ascertain the exact cause and motive, if any, in the death. Some samples have been sent to forensic science laboratory in Mysuru for the report.
