Man falls for bait on Dubai road, ends up losing Dh700,000

March 14, 2017

Dubai, Mar 14: A gang managed to steal Dh700,000 from a salesman after dropping a packet full of US Dollars on the side of a road as a bait to distract him.

ManAccording to court documents, an Uzbek man, 26, lured the victim, together with runaway accomplices, away from traffic and people on a street in Naif area so that his friends would beat him up and snatch the large amount of money that he was carrying. He was charged with theft in the Court of First Instance.

A car rental office manager, also Uzbek, 26, is accused of aiding and abetting the theft by providing the gang with the car they used on November 12, last year, without receiving the necessary documents from them.

Two other Uzbek nationals, aged 39 and 24, are accused of possessing parts of the stolen cash.

"Around 2:00pm, I was assigned by my boss to carry Dh700,000 to a jewelry company which had business deals with his general trading establishment. I had the money in a suitcase and I went there walking," the 40-year-old Nepali salesman said.

After crossing the Naif Street, the salesman saw a packet of US Dollars on the side of the road.

A man picked up the money and gestured to him to follow him into an alley, signaling that he would split the cash with him.

The salesman followed him but he was surprised by another man stepping in and claiming that he had lost that money.

"He said that he wanted to search us. As the first man opened his bag I followed suit and opened my suitcase out of good will," the salesman told the prosecutor.

The victim was then punched in the face so strongly that he fell down and then woke up to see that he had lost the money. He reported the incident to the police and later went to the hospital for treatment.

"CCTV footage showed two men luring the victim in¬¬to an alley and shortly after two other men physically assaulting and running away with the large amounts of money that he was carrying," a police lieutenant said.

"We launched a probe and found that the suspects were driving a car belonging to a rental agency.

On November 19, we arrested one of the accused at the car rental office where he worked. He said that he gave the car for rent to two men without receiving the necessary identification documents from them, which goes against the enforced regulations".

The office employee told the police about one week earlier that he received a call from one of those men to go pick up the car from where he had left it in Sharjah with its keys inside.

"We found that the man gave the logistic support to the gang members to commit crimes without leaving behind any evidence," the lieutenant said.

Another accused was arrested a few hours later in Sharjah.

The trial will continue on April 3.

Hyderabad, MAY 28: A three-year-old boy who accidentally fell into a newly drilled open borewell in Telangana's Medak district was found dead in the early hours of Thursday, police said.

The kid's body was retrieved at around 4 am after a nearly 10 hours' long rescue operation involving different agencies, they said.

"He died a while before we evacuated him, most likely due to the mud that covered him from the top sealing off necessary oxygen supply, " Medak District Superintendent of Police Chandana Deepti told PTI.

The boy had accidentally slipped into the 120- feet borewell at around 5 pm on Wednesday in an agricultural field located in Papannapet mandal of the district when he was walking with his grandfather and father, police earlier said.

As part of rescue efforts, a parallel trench was dug along the borewell hole with the help of earth excavating machines and oxygen was supplied into it, but the efforts went in vain as the boy's body was found stuck at a depth of around 25 feet, the police said.

Apart from the police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were also involved in the rescue operation.

The borewell into which the child fell was one among the three dug by the family since Tuesday night to try and find water for their fields. But none of them yielded any water, police had said.

Ahmadabad, July 17: The Gujarat high court has ordered the Bharuch superintendent of police to investigate and produce a 14-year-old girl before the court, who has allegedly eloped with a man. Ironically, the man was convicted two years ago on Pocso charges for eloping with another minor girl in 2016.

The high court has asked the government to file an application for bail cancellation of the convict because he has indulged in a similar offence after having come out on bail.

The case involved one Dilip Padhiyar (24) from Uchchhad village in Jambusar taluka of Bharuch district.

He was punished with 10 years in jail in December 2018 by a special court for kidnapping a 16-year-old girl in 2016. He was prosecuted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and for rape and kidnapping charges. He got away with a 10-year-imprisonment because the girl was over 16 years and she had not alleged rape. However, Dilip Padhiyar was held guilty of statutory rape, abduction as well as under provisions of Pocso Act.

Dinesh Padhiyar got regular bail from the high court pending his appeal challenging his conviction in January 2019. In November 2019, he eloped with another minor girl.

Her father approached the high court complaining that though an FIR was registered with Vedach police station, the police have not made any effort to trace his minor girl. It was also contended in the habeas corpus petition that Padhiyar is a habitual offender.

Petitioner's advocate Imtiyaz Kureshi said that looking at the past of Dinesh Padhiyar, the high court asked the state government to initiate proceedings for cancellation of his bail.

The bench headed by Justice Sonia Gokani instructed HC's registry to treat the bail cancellation application as an urgent matter.

The high court has ordered Bharuch SP to produce the girl before the court by July 20, and in case she cannot be traced by then, he will have to submit an action taken report.
