Man killed in spat over dog barking during T20 match

March 29, 2016

Bengaluru, Mar 29: A petty argument over watching the World T20 match between India and Australia on Sunday night snowballed into an ugly fight, leaving a man dead and two others injured. The incident occurred at SK?Garden in JC Nagar, northcentral Bengaluru.

KennedyAvinash, 23, a resident of SK?Garden, was watching the match along with friends, David and Kenneth, at a large screen put up at 4th Cross in the locality.

Around 10.30 pm as India were cruising to a famous win, John Kennedy, 24, a youth from the locality, took his dog for a walk. He came to the place where the match was being watched. The dog started barking. Avinash and his friends got annoyed and asked Kennedy to go away.

But he ignored them and stayed put, watching the match himself. The dog barked again, further irritating Avinash and his friends. They picked a fight with Kennedy and beat him up, forcing him to retreat.

Kennedy went home and told his mother and sister about what had happened. The women took him along and went to the spot. They scolded Avinash and his friends. But the men retaliated and thrashed Kennedy. His mother and sister also received some blows in the melee.

Kennedy got furious, picked a broken liquor bottle and pierced it into Avinash's abdomen. He also attacked David and Kenneth. Thereafter, he left the place along with his mother and sister.

Avinash collapsed and started bleeding. Local residents took all the three men to hospital. Avinash succumbed to his injuries while David and Kenneth are said to be out of danger. The jurisdictional JC Nagar rushed to the spot and arrested Kennedy from the terrace of a building where he was hiding.

Just after Avinash was attacked, his younger brother called up his mother and told her about the altercation. The parents rushed to the private hospital and thence to Bowring Hospital where Avinash was admitted. But he died before the parents could reach there.

Avinash was the eldest son of Shankar, a contract worker. He had dropped out of college and was jobless. Kennedy was working as a delivery body with a sales agency, the police aid.

Bengaluru, May 24: Karnataka Tourism Minister CT Ravi said that coronavirus lockdown has severely marred the tourism industry in the state and the government will revive it in a phased manner.

"It would be beneficial if hotels are opened keeping in mind few restrictions. At present, the tourism industry has fallen flat making it very difficult to promote tourism in the state," Ravi said.

"Our department has planned to promote tourism in a phased manner. In the first phase, we would focus on native tourism; then in the second phase, we will promote inter-district travel; in the third phase, we will put weight behind inter-state tourism and in the fourth phase, we would be promoting international travel and tourism," he added.

Karnataka's COVID-19 count surges to 1,958 with 216 new cases of the virus reported in the last 24 hours, said the Health Department in a bulletin on Saturday.

Out of the total number of cases, 1,307 patients are active cases and 608 patients have been discharged. The total number of fatalities due to COVID-19 in the state has risen to 42.

Bengaluru, May 2: The Centre’s classification of districts created confusion in Karnataka as the state’s own categorisation deviates significantly from the health ministry’s list.

For instance, the Centre put the number of districts in the red zone in state at three, while the state Covid-19 war room puts it at 14. Bengaluru Urban and Mysuru figure in the red zone in both lists. While Bengaluru Rural with zero active cases on May 1makes it to the Centre’s red-zone list, it is in the orange zone according to the state.

In addition to these two, the state classifies Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Mandya, Bidar, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkaballapura, Dharwad, Gadag, Tumakuru and Davanagere as red-zone districts.

State Covid war-room authorities said they would take a look at the Centre’s criteria for classification and take a call. Besides, incharge Munish Mudgil pointed out that states are allowed to make additions to the red and orange zones. According to the Centre’s list, Karnataka has 13 districts in the orange zone and 14 in the green zone.

Sudan said, “the districts were earlier designated as hotspots or red zones, orange zones and green zones primarily based on the cumulative cases reported and the doubling rate. Since recovery rates have gone up, the districts are now being designated across various zones duly broad-basing the criteria.

This classification takes into consideration incidence of cases, doubling rate, extent of testing and surveillance feedback. A district will be considered under the green zone if there are no confirmed cases so far or if there is no reported case in the past 21 days.”

Ernakulam, May 25: Miscreants belonging to self-proclaimed Hindutva outfits have demolished a church set erected for the shoot of a Malayalam film at Kalady in Kerala’s Ernakulam district.

The set was erected to shoot the climax scene of the super hero film Minnal Murali, directed by Basil Joseph and starring Tovino Thomas and newcomer actor Femina.

The incident took place on Sunday. Members of the Antharashtra Hindu Parishad claimed that with the help of their sister outfit Antarashtra Bajrang Dal, they demolished the church set, erected on an island on the Periyar river in Kalady.

Hari Palode, the General Secretary of AHP, an organisation founded by Praveen Togadia, boasted on Facebook that they were not used to pleading to anyone, and decided to demolish the church set that was constructed near the Adi Sankaracharya mutt.

“When they built such a structure in front of the Mahadeva shrine in Kalady, we said no. We had also submitted several complaints. We do not have the habit of pleading. We decided to demolish it. Our self respect must be protected at all cost,” AHP’s General Secretary Hari Palode wrote on his Facebook post along with pictures of members demolishing the set.

The post also credited members of the Anrarashtra Bajrang Dal and its Ernakulam Division President Malayatoor Ratheesh for participating in the ‘service work’ of razing the church set.

Mini Biju, member of Kalady Town panchayat confirmed that the film unit had indeed secured permission from the department before going ahead with the construction of the set.

“They had submitted a letter seeking permission to raise a temporary set. This was back in February before construction began. The panchayat committee had approved this request,” Mini said.
