Police arrested Udyan Das from near his home in Saket Nagar late in the night. They broke the concrete structure and recovered the body after he confessed to the crime. He killed Akanksha Sharma, alias Shweta , on December 27, police said.

The murder came to light when a team of West Bengal Police came to Bhopal looking for Sharma , whose parents lodged a complaint in December.

“Uday has confessed his crime but he is changing his statements. We are trying to verify the facts and get answers to many unanswered questions,” sub-inspector Ramesh Rai said on Friday.

Das told police they fought often as Sharma used to talk to her ex-boyfriend. On December 27, they again had an argument and he strangled her.

He stuffed the body in a wooden box and poured cement on it. Das waited for the cement to dry up before building a concrete platform and fixing marble tiles over it.

According to police, Sharma , a resident of Bankura in West Bengal, met Das on a social media site in 2007 and left her home in June last, telling her parents she had got a job in New York.

But, she came to Bhopal and started living with Das, who owns two luxury cars. Police are investigating the source of Das’s income as he doesn’t have a job but maintains a lavish lifestyle.

For a month, the woman remained in touch with her family, telling them she was in New York.

But after July, her family didn’t hear from her. Her parents lodged a police complaint while her brother traced the location of his sister’s cellphone to Bhopal, police said.

Das was evasive about his relationship with Sharma . He told police they got married in New York but changed the statement later to say the ceremony was held in a local temple.

Das told police his father used to work for BHEL and his mother retired as a deputy superintendent of police. He also claimed to be an IIT-Delhi passout. But, police are cross-checking his claims as he changed statements repeatedly.

Some neighbours told police that Das had locked his house and used to enter it through a window.

Khammam, Jun 29: In an outrageous incident, some youths beat up a monkey and strung it up on a tree to death while also releasing dogs to attack it in Ammapalem village in Telangana's Khammam district.

A video of the heinous incident of animal cruelty has surfaced on social media, in which the monkey is seen hanging by a rope from a tree, desperately flailing its limbs while a couple of dogs attempt to pounce on and torment the hapless simian. After a while, several men are seen in the video approaching the animal with long sticks.

Forest officials have charged one villager Venkateshwar Rao under Wildlife Protection Act along with the other accused and arrested them. They were released on bail on Saturday and are set to be summoned for questioning by forest officials.

Rao had spotted the monkey, which had entered his residence apparently in search of food and beat it with a stick and hung it from a tree with the help of his friend.

In the video of the incident, Rao could also be seen instructing his pet dogs to bite the monkey, which was fighting for its life.

Hyderabad, May 25: Indicating foul play in the death of nine people, including six of a family, whose bodies were fished out from a well near Warangal, a forensic expert on Sunday virtually ruled out suicide theory, saying it appeared seven of them had been dragged and thrown into the water body.

Mystery shrouded the death of nine people, including six of a family, whose bodies were found in a well, five of them on Friday and four on Thursday, on the outskirts of Warangal in Telangana.

Police stepped up the probe and forensic analysis was also underway in the case.

The forensic expert, who visited the crime scene as part of the investigation citing preliminary tests, said that the seven of nine people had scratch injuries and appeared to have been "dragged" and "thrown" into the well.

Forensic reports are expected in 10 days, the forensic expert told media on Sunday adding after examining the crime scene it appears that the deaths were not suicides.

"We have preserved all organs and the same were sent to forensic science laboratory (FSL) for examination... some two or three persons might have been involved in the crime. There are scratch injuries on the bodies," he said.

"It appears that they were thrown into the water... There were no injuries on the child's body. We are awaiting the forensic report (to ascertain) whether they were poisoned. It didn't appear as if they committed suicide," the expert, who performed the post-mortem said.

Police sources said at least two people were picked up for questioning.

Bodies of the head of the family, wife, daughter and three-year old grandson were found floating and fished out on Thursday.

On Friday morning, some bodies were seen floating following which police pumped out the water from the well and found others.

The 48-year old man had migrated from West Bengal over 20 years ago and had settled down here. His family had been staying in two rooms on the premises of the unit, police had earlier said.
