Man with over Rs 90 lakhs deposit in crisis-hit PMC Bank dies hours after protest

Oct 15: A 51-year-old man, who had Rs 90 lakh in the crisis-hit Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank, died of cardiac arrest on Monday within hours of taking part in a protest rally led by depositors against the strict restrictions on the withdrawal of money from the bank.

A former Jet Airways staff, Sanjay Gulati, had already lost his job earlier this year following the grounding of the airlines.

With a specially-abled son at home, Gulati needed regular cash in hand for his treatment and care which became impossible after the RBI placed stringent limits on cash withdrawals by the bank's depositors.

On Monday, Gulati participated in the protest against the harsh limits. The bank is embroiled in a Rs 3,830 crore scam.

After returning home, Gulati, while having food, suffered a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the nearby Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where he was declared brought dead, according to news agency.

According to another customer, Gulati and his family members held deposits worth around Rs 90 lakh in the Oshiwara Branch of PMC Bank, which has been frozen after the Reserve Bank of India's action last month.

Disturbed since the past few days by the developments, he had joined the protest rally on Monday afternoon outside a Mumbai court where the prime accused -- a former chairman of PMC Bank, S. Waryam Singh, Housing Development & Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL) directors Rakesh Wadhawan and Sarang Wadhavan -- were produced.

It may be recalled that after the scam surfaced on September 23, the RBI had imposed wide-ranging sanctions on the PMC Bank and barred people from withdrawing more than Rs 1000 initially; later it was raised to Rs 25,000 and on Monday (October 14) to Rs 40,000.

Coming ahead of the festival season, the RBI's decisions had faced flak from various quarters even as the restrictions will continue till February 2020, leading to huge distress among the customers and depositors, besides panic in business and banking circles.

Gulati's funeral was held here at the Andheri west crematorium on Tuesday afternoon and was attended by his family -- elderly parents, his wife, sister and other relatives, besides other PMC Bank customers.

Global COVID-19 cases top 4.6 million: Johns Hopkins University

Washington, May 17: The overall number of global coronavirus cases has increased to over 4.6 million, while the death toll has surpassed 311,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Sunday morning, the total number of cases stood at 4,634,068, while the death toll increased to 311,781, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US currently accounts for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 1,467,796 and 88,754, respectively.

In terms of cases, Russia has the second highest number of infections at 272,043, followed by the UK (241,461), Brazil (233,142), Spain (230,698), Italy (224,760), France (179,630), Germany (175,752), Turkey (148,067) and Iran (118,392), the CSSE figures showed.

Meanwhile, the UK accounted for the second highest COVID-19 deaths worldwide at 34,546.

The other countries with over 10,000 deaths are Italy (31,763), Spain (27,563), France (27,532), and Brazil (15,662).

Leaders are feeling suffocated in Cong: Amit Shah asks party to self-introspect

New Delhi, Jun 25: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday hit out at Congress for "unceremoniously sacking" its spokesperson and said that leaders in the opposition party are "feeling suffocated".

To substantiate his point, Shah referred to the recent Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet in which senior members and younger members raised a few issues, however, they were "shut down".

Taking to Twitter, Shah posted two English dailies' articles titled -- "Not scared of PM Modi, but many in the party dodge him: Rahul at Congress Working Committee meet" and "Congress removes Sanjay Jha as party spokesperson after critical article".

Last week, Jha was dropped as AICC spokesperson and Abhishek Dutt and Sadhna Bharti appointed as National Media Panelist of Congress party.

"During the recent CWC meet, senior members and younger members raised a few issues. But, they were shouted down. A party spokesperson was unceremoniously sacked. The sad truth is - leaders are feeling suffocated in Congress," the Union Minister tweeted.

Meanwhile, Shah also targetted Congress on the completion of 45 years of emergency, which was imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975 and asked the party to self introspect.

"As one of India's opposition parties, Congress needs to ask itself: Why does the Emergency mindset remain? Why are leaders who do not belong to 1 dynasty unable to speak up? Why are leaders getting frustrated in Congress? Else, their disconnect with people will keep widening," he wrote.

Virus infected Italians moved from ITBP to Medanta hospital in Gurugram

Mar 5: The fourteen Italians, who have tested positive for coronavirus, have been shifted to the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon from an ITBP quarantine centre.

The hospital issued a statement on Thursday morning, saying these patients are housed on a completely separate floor, which has been quarantined and has no contact with the rest of the hospital.

There is a dedicated medical team wearing protective gear looking after these patients.All items used on the floor are isolated to that floor.

The isolated floor will completely contain the disease even with these asymptomatic persons. All other hospital operations are operating as normal, and there is no increased risk to patients, visitors or staff, the statement said.

Twenty-one Italian tourists and their three Indian tour operators were shifted out from an ITBP quarantine centre here on Wednesday as they were exposed to novel coronavirus.

An affected Italian couple is being treated at Jaipur's SMS medical college.

Officials on Tuesday said the foreigners have been sent to a private hospital in Gurgaon and a centre in the national capital while the Indians have been transferred to the Safdarjung Hospital.

Fourteen Italians and an Indian (driver), who were in the same group as the affected Italian couple, tested positive for the virus as per information provided by the Health Ministry.

The Italian tourists and three Indians were admitted to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) force centre in Chhawla on Tuesday.

The Centre already has 112 people, 76 Indians and 36 foreigners, since February 27 after they were evacuated by an Indian Air Force (IAF) plane from China's Wuhan, the epicentre of the deadly coronavirus.

The first samples of these 112 people had tested negative when reports came in last week.
