Man sets 18-yr-old college girl on fire for rejecting his ‘proposal’

Kasaragod, May 12: A man set an 18-year-old girl on fire after she rejected his advances at Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. The accused poured petrol on her on a street in broad daylight and set her ablaze.

The victim, a student of radiology and a native of Ayiroor, Pathanamthitta, has been hospitalised and the initial reports suggest that she has suffered 75 per cent burns. The accused tried to flee the scene of crime but was caught.

A man, witnesses to the ghastly crime, overpowered the accused, Ajin Reji Mathew, and handed him over to the police. It was told by the witness that Mathew had set the girl on fire after pouring petrol over her.

On being questioned, the accused told the cops that he was provoked after the girl refused his proposal. Enraged by the rejection, he committed the crime. However, police have continued with the questioning of the accused as he had petrol with him at the time she rejected his proposal.

It would hint that it is a case of predetermined murder and a thought out crime rather than a case of murder due to temporary insanity that the accused tried to advocate.

Mangaluru City Corporation office closed for a week

Mangaluru, Jun 28: In an attempt to curb fast spreading Coronavirus and to bring discipline among the public to follow the guidelines and also as it was found difficult to control the visitors, the City Corporation Mayor Diwakar has ordered closure of the office for one week with immediate effect from Monday.

Public will be banned from entering the MCC building for a period of one week from Monday, he said.

In a circular the Mayor has requested the public to co-operate and help the administration to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

However, a help desk will be set up outside the MCC building where people can submit their applications and requests.

Vidya Dinker, Naveenchandra to participate in national level consultation on Urban Governance

Mangalore, Jan 21: Former city councillor and social activists Naveenchandra and social activist Vidya Dinker have been invited to participate in two-day National Level Consultation on Urban Governance which will take place on January 22 and 23 at Juniper Hall, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Urban governance stakeholders of 20 states and one union territory will be participating in this national level consultative seminar. The participants will include elected representatives, NGO representatives and urban planning experts. The seminar is being organised by Mumbai based Prajna Foundation, which has undertaken an in-depth study of the governance of the 20 states and one union territories.

Having served several terms as a corporator of Mangaluru City Corporation, Naveenchandra is knowledgeable in matters relating to urban governance. He is very popular in his constituency. Vidya Dinker is a well known city based social activist. She is the Coordinator, Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development.

Vidya Dinker I can understand but Naveen i don't know on what qualifications and credentials he has been selected and to say he is Popular in his constituency is a Misnormer . Just visit kambla ward once and speak to people and you can understand it better !!!

Young businessman hacked to death at Mulki; his two relatives injured in attack by gang

Mangaluru, June 5: A local businessman was hacked to death while two of his relatives suffered critical injuries in a broad daylight attack by a group of miscreants at Mulki on the outskirts of the city today.

The victim has been identified as Abdul Lateef (38). He was proprieter of Align Gold, Moodbidri. His wife is an advocate in Moodbidri.

Abdul Lateef's father-in-law Muneer and latter's son Hayat suffered stab injuries. They are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru.

The attack took place near the Vijaya Bank in Mulki.

According to sources, a gang of miscreants stabbed all three. While Abudl Lateef succumbed to his injuries, the other two are responding to the treatment.

Police have registered a case. Investigations are on.
