Mandya farmers protest over water crisis, HDK asks Centre to intervene

Bengaluru, Jun 24: As farmers protest over water entered the fourth day, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday shifted onus to the Centre and asked it to direct the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to resolve the issue.

Farmers in Mandya have been demanding diversion of Cauvery and Hemavati waters to their canals in order to save their produce.

"Now the Central government has already constituted Cauvery Water Management Authority which had asked Karnataka government to release 9 TMC of water to Tamil Nadu," Kumaraswamy told ANI.

"There is a shortage of water in Karnataka. The central government has to take the decision. They have to direct authority. It is not in my hands," he said.

Earlier in the day, Deputy CM G Parameshwara met the farmers who have been protesting since Friday.

Tamil Nadu, which too has been grappling with the scarcity of water, on Thursday demanded that 9.19 TMC feet of water should be released immediately in accordance with the recent decision of the CWMA.

Participating in a meeting of the committee, chaired by its head Naveen Kumar, officials from Tamil Nadu said the Cauvery Water Management Board on May 21 had recommended release of 9.19 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic) feet of water without delay.

Belagavi,  Jul 19: In a heart-wrenching incident, a woman used a pushcart to take the body of her dead husband to the crematorium after she allegedly did not receive any help from relatives who suspected him to have died of Covid.

The woman and her son were seen pushing the body in the Athani thaluk of Belagavi.

The man had died two days ago at his residence and no family member apart from the close members attended the last rites due to the fear that he was COVID-19 positive.

It was later found that the deceased person was COVID-19 negative.

A total of 3,693 new COVID-19 positive cases and 115 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Friday, said the state health department.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the state is presently at 55,115, including 33,205 active cases. While there are 20,757 recoveries, the death toll stands at 1,147.

Udupi, Feb 29: Senior Congress leader and Udupi’s crackers trader K Krishnaraja Saralaya allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well outside his house at Paniyadi on Saturday.

He was 87, Krishnaraja was leading a solitary life. It is suspected that he ended his life ''due to mental agony''.

He is survived by two daughters. One is settled in Australia another is in Bengaluru. Saralaya had also served as President of Udupi Town Co-operative Society. The police visited the spot .

Bengaluru, May 13: Gym and hotels, which had remained closed due to lockdown to combat spread of Coronavirus, would be allowed to function from May 17, Karnataka Minister for Tourism C T Ravi said on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media, after a meeting with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa here he said that the Chief Minister has agreed to give permission to gym, hotels and golf clubs to function and as they have assured to maintain social distance and follow other guidelines of the lockdown.

Mr Ravi, who is also Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports, further said that reopening of hotel industry would help in attracting tourists. Opening of gym and fitness centre was important for sports persons and regular exercisers.
