Maneesh Sharma: I expect National Award for Shah Rukh Khan after 'Fan'

May 4, 2016

Mumbai, May 4: Shah Rukh Khan's performance as both a Bollywood superstar and his much-younger look-alike admirer in 'Fan' deserves a National Award next year, feels film's director Maneesh Sharma.

FanThe 50-year-old actor has received immense praise for his dual act, especially as Gaurav Chandna, whose love for his favourite star eventually turns against him. "I am actually expecting National Award for Shah Rukh for his work in the film. Let's hope he gets it. It feels great seeing the response Shah Rukh is getting for his performance. It is satisfying," Maneesh said.

"Shah Rukh is the happiest with the kind of response he is getting for his performance and the whole team is very happy as we think we have done something little alternate and getting appreciation for that is always way more assuring for any director, actor or producer."

'Fan' was one of the most anticipated films of the year and especially for a reason that from its story to his role, the movie was unlike what Shah Rukh had done in years and fans associated him with. In terms of bringing an "alternate" film to the 'Shah Rukh Khan-loving audience' and getting praise for it, Maneesh says 'Fan' has been an extremely satisfying journey.

"I am very satisfied in the sense that it was an alternate stuff for a Shah Rukh Khan-film and we all knew we were going for something little out of the box in terms of what is expected out of YRF-SRK combination." "Cinematically, we have done something which we are very proud of whether in terms of story-telling like not having song, dance, heroine or fulfilling any commercial expectation, which is what people associate with Shah Rukh and Yash Raj."

"In that sense whatever response that we are getting and the benchmark that we have set with VFX that has been very satisfying." Having Shah Rukh in a film is a dream for any young filmmaker but it also comes with a lot of pressure of not disappointing his huge fan base.

Maneesh, however, begs to differ as he feels every film regardless of its leading star is a risk in its own way. "Honestly, every time you make a film it is a risk. Filmmaking is a risky thing. Making 'Fan' did not weigh me down in terms of having Shah Rukh Khan on board... Any film comes with that amount of risk."

'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' comes with that amount of risk as you are making it with newcomers, at a certain scale, milieu... You don't know whether it will work. You just go with your conviction and hope for the best." His conviction with 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' surely worked as it not only got audience's love but also picked the Best Hindi Film Trophy at the 63rd National Awards.

"It is the most highly revered and respectable award we have. It feels like once in a lifetime opportunity right now and it also feels good that it has happened so early in all our careers. Hopefully, it will motivate us to come back again."

Mar 21: Singer Sonu Nigam has decided to extend his stay in Dubai as he believes travelling amid the coronavirus outbreak can put people around him at risk.

The singer was in the Himalayas earlier and wanted to come to Mumbai for a concert scheduled for March 6 but it got postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.

He then decided to head to Dubai to be with his wife and son and has been there since a few weeks.

"I am fortunate that my wife and my son are in Dubai. My son studies here and I keep travelling here a lot, Dubai is like my second base. But my father, sister are alone in India. I wanted to come back to India and be at my father's side but I realised that if I do that, I'll be exposing him to the risk of me carrying this virus, who knows the extent of the danger," Sonu told

The 46-year-old singer said everybody is taking precautions and he wants to ensure that the health of those around him isn't at risk.

"I thought let's not outsmart the virus. I thought it's better for me to stay for a bit (till things go normal). Coming back to India, and then going in quarantine will still be a risk.

"I came to Dubai and I thought I'll be able to go back to India but I didn't know it's going to be such an issue eventually. But we are fine here."

On Friday, singer Kanika Kapoor become the first Bollywood celebrity to test positive for the deadly virus in the country and has said she is under complete quarantine and medical care.

The UP police later booked the singer for negligence and committing acts that are likely to spread disease dangerous to life after she attended at least three gatherings in Lucknow, including a party where political leaders were present.

When asked if his decision of staying back was in anyway related to what happened to Kanika, Sonu said that wasn't the case.

"The last time I was contemplating coming to India was on March 16 night, but thankfully my flight got cancelled. Then from March 17, there was this regulation from the government of India that you have to go on a self quarantine for 14 days, compulsorily. I decided I shouldn't take a chance. Being a potential carrier is the worst thing," he said

In Dubai, the singer said the family is taking extreme precautions.

"We all are being safe, staying indoors, not gathering with many people. Careless people shouldn't be around you at this point, people who are too brash, that 'oh nothing will happen.' I don't allow such people in my vicinity. I'm.very hygiene conscious anyway." said the singer.

Sonu said he will be conducting a live music concert on his social media on Sunday.

Washington, Mar 23: Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, US media reported Sunday.

Harvey Weinstein, 68, is in prison in northern New York state after being sentenced to 23 years in jail for rape and sexual assault.

The fallen film producer's diagnosis was first reported Sunday evening by local paper the Niagara Gazette.

Harvey Weinstein's spokespeople have declined to comment to US media on the subject.

The New York state Department of Corrections did not respond when contacted by AFP for confirmation of the reports.

Harvey Weinstein was transferred Wednesday to a prison near Buffalo, 350 miles (560 kilometers) northwest of New York City.

Prior to his transfer, he stayed at Rikers Island prison and a Manhattan hospital, where he was treated for chest pains.

Crowded US prisons have the potential to become hotbeds for coronavirus infections. Last week, guards at Rikers and New York's Sing Sing prison tested positive for the virus, local media reported.

As of Sunday, the virus has killed 417 people in the US out of more than 33,000 cases, according to a tracker managed by Johns Hopkins University.

Harvey Weinstein was convicted in February of a criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the third degree, while being cleared of predatory sexual assault charges.

He was convicted of raping ex-actress Jessica Mann in 2013 and of forcibly performing oral sex on former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006.

Nearly 90 women, including Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek, have leveled sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein, the Oscar-winning producer of "Shakespeare in Love" and numerous other critical and box office hits.
