Mangalore under CCTV surveillance

September 15, 2011

Mangalore, September 15: The modern technology has geared up to play a crucial role in the security system of Mangalore , with the Police Commissionerate poised to bring the crucial points of this coastal city under surveillance with the help of close circuit television (CCTV) cameras round the clock.

The monitoring of traffic with the help of CCTV Cameras, according to police, will reduce a lot of uncertainty and ambiguity, as the footage will provide first hand evidence.

Mangalore City Police Commissioner, Seemanth Kumar Singh speaking to Coastal Digest informed that the cameras that are being installed would be monitored by a team throughout 24 hours. This will enable them to note down traffic violations, including minor details such as the vehicle design and vehicle number. In case of accidents, the culprits can be identified using the recorded footage, he said.

The cameras have been placed at important locations of the city such as Hampankatte, PVS, Jyothi, Lal Bagh, Lady Hill, City Bus Terminus, KSRTC Bus stand, Railway Staion, Kottara Chowki, and others.

The Commissioner expressed regret that the work has not been completed as yet, due to rains. He is positive that this project will certainly help monitor crime, not only in terms of traffic violations, but also anti-social elements such as chain snatching.

Once the work is completed, these cameras will record every activity at any part of the day. As it is being operated from a control room, any sort of violation of rules will be immediately detected and the culprits, taken to task. Depending on the budget, more number of cameras may be installed in the future, Mr Singh said.

Besides important places in the city, several cameras have also been installed at the Mangalore Airport as part of its security measures. This will facilitate checking and identification of suspicious activities, said the Mangalore Airport Director, M R Vasudeva. “Most importantly, the entry and exit of people, which is crucial, will be noted down,” he added.

M R Vasudeva is of the opinion that the fixing of these CCTV cameras has more of a psychological effect on the people. He stated that the knowledge of CCTV cameras monitoring their moves will make the people cautious of whatever they do.

Mangaluru, Feb 12: More than 7,000 people at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) and over 1,000 at the New Mangalore Port (NMP) have undergone thermal screening for the novel coronavirus in the past few days, a taluk health official said on Wednesday.

A few more ships are scheduled to arrive at the port and all precautionary measures to check the ship’s passengers and crew are ready, he said.

Soon after a positive case of deadly pathogen surfaced in Kerala, the district health officials here actively started monitoring all entry points in the bordering district.

Apart from Mangaluru, there is bus connectivity to Puttur, Sullia, Bantwal, Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya from Kerala. More than eight to 10 trains arrive at Mangaluru daily from Kerala.

Hence, it is impossible to take up screening of all the vehicles arriving from Kerala, sources in District Health and Family Welfare said.

Mangaluru, Mar 31: With the Dakshina Kannada district administration relaxing the lockdown from 6 am to 3 pm to purchase essential commodities, panic-stricken citizens rushed to the shops early in the morning itself.

The citizens had formed a serpentine line in front of shops and supermarkets in different parts of Mangaluru and on the outskirts of the city to purchase their requirements.

As a precautionary measure, many were seen wearing masks.

“In spite of waiting in a long queue to purchase, we are not able to get the required essential commodities. Why can’t the district administration ensure enough stock of commodities in the shops and supermarkets,’’ asked a customer who had stood in a queue outside a supermarket at Chilimbi.
People were seen crowding outside markets at Kankanady, Mallikatte, Urwa and Central Market, violating the purpose of social distancing.

Consequently, vegetable prices have increased in the markets and shops. This is despite abundant stocks being available in these markets.

Trucks had unloaded the vegetables at Central Market on Sunday, according to sources. The prices of onions are skyrocketing yet again and is sold from Rs 50 to Rs 55 while a kg of carrot costs Rs 100.

"Why can’t the authorities check the rise in the price of vegetables and ensure that the poor are not inconvenienced," asks Lakshmi, a housewife.
