Mangalore University to award 97 PhD degrees, 45 gold medals during 36th convocation

Mangaluru, Feb 24: The 36th annual convocation of Mangalore University will be held on Monday, February 26 at 11.00 a.m. in the Mangala Auditorium on the Mangalore University Campus. 

Announcing this at a press meet here on Saturday Prof K Byrappa, vice chancellor of the MU, said that Prof Subra Suresh., President and Distinguished Professor, Nanyang Technological University [NTU], Singapore will be the chief guest and deliver the convocation address. Governor of Karnataka and the Chancellor of the University Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala will confer the degrees to all the candidates. Basavaraj Rayaraddi, the Pro-Chancellor of the University and Minister for Higher Education, Government of Karnataka will grace the occasion.

During this convocation Mangalore University will award 97 Doctor of Philosophy degrees (Arts- 17, Science- 74, Commerce- 4 and Education- 2). 45 gold medals, 75 cash prizes. There are 242 Ranks, out of which 65 students are 1st rank holders (P.G- 48 & U.G. –17: Arts- 17; Science & Technology- 33; Commerce- 10; Education- 02 and P.G. Diploma- 03). 

The particulars of total number of candidates who appeared and passed during 2016-17 in various examinations conducted by Mangalore University are briefly presented as follows:

A total of 36,280 candidates appeared for the examinations and 26,164 (72.12%) have passed. The Course wise statistics are in the P.G. courses out of 6,323 candidates who appeared, 5,929 (93.77%) have passed and out of 29,843 U.G. students who appeared, 20,122 (67.43%) have passed and in P.G. Diploma course out of 17 candidates who appeared, 16 (94.12%) have passed.

Out of 5,929 P.G. students who have passed, boys account for 1,871 (31.56%) and the girls represent 4,058 (68.44 %).  Similarly at the U.G. level, out of 20,122 candidates who passed, 6,970 (34.64%) are boys and the remaining 13,152 (65.36%) are girls.  As far as the P.G. Diploma examinations are concerned, out of 16 candidates 
 who passed, 6 (37.5%) are boys and the remaining 10(62.5%) are girls.

With regard to the gender composition, out of 26,164 total number of candidates who passed, 8,898 (61.24% pass percentage) are boys and the girls represent 17,266 (79.38% pass percentage)

As far as total performance in the examinations is concerned, out of 26067 (Except Ph.D.) candidates who passed,     9129 (35.00%) account for distinction, 9,129 (35.00%) are first class, 6151 (23.60%) are second class and the remaining  1,658 (6.40%) belonged to pass class.

Out of 26164 candidates who passed, 2,963 (11.33%) (Ph.D.-97, P.G.-680, U.G.-2187) will receive their degree in person.

New Delhi, Mar 4: Tech giant Intel has said one of its employees in Bengaluru has "potentially been exposed" to coronavirus and is currently under quarantine.

The company also said it has implemented precautionary measures like travel restrictions, increased frequency of office sanitisation, and work-from-home provisions in India.

"An Intel employee in Bangalore has potentially been exposed and is currently under quarantine in accordance with government requirements," Intel said in a late night statement on Tuesday.

The company said it is monitoring the coronavirus situation closely and working to ensure that its employees have the information and resources they need to stay safe and informed.

In India, we have implemented precautionary measures such as travel and event restrictions, visitor screenings at all our offices, increased frequency of office sanitisation, and work-from-home provisions," it said.

The virus outbreak, which has seen cases being registered across the world including South Korea, Iran, Italy and Japan, has had a significant impact on businesses across industries.

Microblogging platform Twitter has asked its employees to work from home while other tech giants like Tata Consultancy Services and HCL Technologies instructed staff to avoid non-essential travel as IT firms put in place measures to safeguard workers against the deadly coronavirus.

The coronavirus outbreak claimed over 3,000 lives globally, and fresh cases being reported in India.

The government has stepped up its efforts to detect and check the virus outbreak whose epicentre was in China.

Mangaluru, May 4: Bunder Shramika Sangha (BSS) general secretary B K Imthiyaz on Monday urged the district administration to restart Bengre ferry and passenger boat services as it has affected the wholesale market in Old Port.

A majority of the labourers engaged in loading and unloading at the wholesale market in Old Bunder hail from Bengre area. Without the ferry service, the labourers cannot come to work, said Imthiyaz.

He said no positive cases had been reported from Bengre area. Thus, the district administration should give permission for operating ferry services between 7 am and 12 noon.

Udupi, Jan 25: The accused, who planted a crude bomb at the Mangalore International Airport on January 20, was brought to Udupi on Saturday, to collect information, as part of the spot investigation, police said here.

According to police officials, accused Aditya Rao was brought to Karnataka Bank Kadiyali branch, where Rao had a Safe Locker. The team opened the locker and seized the documents, along with a Box.

They said the seized documents, along with the Box, will be sent to the FSL for investigation.
